I look at it like Squidward represents adulthood whilst SpongeBob and Patrick represent childhood and innocence. So as a kid watching this we relate more to SpongeBob and Patrick whereas Squidward is detestable. As adults it switches and we begin relating to Squidward more and more cause we're living the adult life now and finally understand him.
