  • Ever wanted to record vocals and the singer just can't deal with headphones? Here is a great solution.
Taking advantage of the null points of a cardioid pickup pattern you can have the singer track vocals right in front of the monitors and have virtually no bleed into the vocal track.
Be sure to keep the volume under control, watch the room reflections and you should get terrific results with nothing more than typical headphone bleed into the vocal track. The singer will love the natural sound and deliver a better performance.

This is great. Should've also included audio from the camera just for perspective.
I really want to try this.

Good idea on including iphone audio. It would be basically what we hear vs what the mic hears.

But I suppose that you are recording voice and track at the same time, meaning that you can't mix them separately? Sorry, not very technical, have recently been left alone trying to figure everything. being a very high soprano I struggle with headphones on my head.

The music was already done in this case. He is simply overdubbing the vocal. The music is being played back through the speakers and he is singing along.

    Sounds great.
Do you put gate on the vocals?

Nope. Positioning the mic so the speakers are in the null spots does the trick.

Do you need to put the speakers out of phase?

Nope. That's one of those "in theory" things. I've tried a few variations of that idea and heard no difference. Perhaps it would matter in a perfectly controlled environment. As is the isolation is quite good. :-)

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your question.

Hi, are the vocals coming back from the speakers as well while singing? Like you can hear reverb or else?

I think I’m this case the vocals were not coming out of the monitors. They could but it would have to be quietly.
