*You seem especially cheerful in this vid! It's hard to contain your joy over some successes! Congratulations! This Fairmont series has been very enjoyable, and your presentation skills are "par excellent' ".
If you search Facebook marketplace for Ft Smith Arkansas-Bentonville area for Fairmont you'll find it for sale. I sold it 2.5 years ago and the guy I sold it to sold it to a dealer down there. Basically in the same shape it was with different wheels (new tires) and a few loose ends tied up
hey well thanks! Don't worry about that, I have no appetite to take that many things apart at this point to replace a cam, but that would help with the sleeper mode for sure!
Bro really. That's not bad for a 302 smogger with decent heads. . Some tuning with the carb and timing, gears and trans pack and you'll be golden for sure. Total success in my book keep having fun little brother!!!!! That's what it's all about.
It really was a fun experiment. I later recorded an 8 second 0-60. I ended up selling it in February, but the new owner of it who had plans for it has actually left it alone. I keep in touch with him, and he says "I just enjoy driving it the way it is". Which honestly makes me feel super proud as a "car builder".
I’m thinking definitely go near 36 in total timing at 3000 rpm and also try to find a tiny bit more gear. 3.55 or maybe even 3.73. That will take out that bog but might fry the tires. Let the good times roll
Sounds and runs great! I said a long time ago I was confident it would break traction naturally. Still a LOT to be had from these diesel low shift points though. Probably time to get a small tach and either learn how to shift it yourself with the column shifter or buy a performance automatic floor shifter. The 1-2 shift looked nice and firm as it should be but if it was mine I'd turn the shift points and line pressure up even more since it sounds like its shifting at about 3500 RPM. I'd also put a timing light on it and see if you can increase the advance before playing with the carb. If you can run more advance it would give you noticeably more power and very likely cure that stumble. If it doesn't cure that stumble then I have lots of good information to share about Holley accelerator pump adjustments. In fact one of the Holley vids about accelerator pump tuning says to check for proper ignition timing before making adjustments because it has such a big effect on throttle response.
@@Str8sixfan Try to see if it likes around 18 initial or 34 to 36 total. That's the ballpark a couple different Ford performance forums suggest for mild 302 builds. To check total timing unplug and cap off the vacuum advance and slowly increase revs until timing levels out.
@@Impactjunky my 88 mustang ran its hardest with the initial timing at 18*. I got that stock speed density motor down into the 12.90s with good tires, gears, and driving the hell out of it.
@@thatdumpsterfirelife7530 I believe it! I've heard other people say they got relatively mild 5.0 Fox bodies to hit the low 13s/high 12s. One guy said he had a 5 speed and street/strip radials and could get a couple inches of air under the drivers front tire on a good hard launch.
Pretty sure that's quicker than it was when it came off the showroom floor. A mild (2500 rpm stall) converter swap would probably put it around 7 sec, but I think you're done modding this one. You've got it where it's reliable and fun to drive.
I think you're right. I have it in position for the next person to buy it to be able to spend $150-200 and probably make a big improvement with whatever that is. Next, it's time to see how much better it does burnouts
Definitely seems like its getting to much fuel of the hit but it sounds good seems to be running pretty good all around!! Time to get it on the track!! Lol great video
it hadn't done that until last night when I filmed it. But I had been suspecting running too rich for awhile. Now I need to just get off my ass and figure it out
I want to throw my 2 cents in. 1st off the cars sounds great. 2nd tachometer and air/ fuel. Those 2 things will show good gains and don't break the bank. Good job on the car.
Sad thing is...I have a tach but have wussed out on installing (for tuning to idle). And I have been considering buyin an A/F gauge (which keep in mind I have a former EFI h-pipe converted to y-pipe so I already have two places to screw into for an O2 sensor), but have procrastinated on ordering that for like 4-5 weeks straight.
Makes me want to go run the 92 Mustang GT and see how it stacks up. What app were you using? You should look into draggy time unit. They are very fun for things like this. Great video.
Sounds like it needs more aggressive accelerator pump ramp, arm out of adjustment or squirters too small...if its a vacuum secondary. If its a DP then could be too much but didnt see any black smoke after stumble cleared, i had to step up in squirter size before the loose converter but stalling it up could get you over the stumble area too
What if I told you it was a 2bbl? Also, it didn't do this the previous few times out before this video, so not sure. But I do have an A/F ratio gauge now for it. Hope to install it this week
Start by checking the timing, assuming your ignition system is in good shape. You might also want to adjust your shift point higher. Seems like its shifting in the 3500 range. Did you you not install a GT40 intake?
It was a carb car, so just did the head swap. It was meant to be a pseudo budget build. So it was actually still a 2bbl car to boot. I ended up getting it tuned better later, and clocked a 7.99 0-60.
it ended up being the power valve was way too aggressive. Once I got that swapped to a leaner one I was able to get AFR dialed in and ran a 7.99 0-60. I sold the car back in Feb. of 2022, but appreciate you stopping by!
I ended up swapping the stock 2.47s for a trac-lok 3.27 8.8 out of a 91 Mark VII. 70mph would had been painful with anything past that unless I had a OD transmission.
I'm not too worried about it (gearing). This car was more about building an all around complete car on a budget. Its so much faster than it was. If I had more gear it wouldn't even hit 70... it runs a lot of rpm as it is with the 3.27s and C4. I'm pretty happy with how it runs when tuned right
@@GearheadRob319 yea that was a little bit of hyperbole. I don't have a tach on it, but it wouldn't surprise me if I'm pretty close to 3k at 70 right now. So I'd be pretty wary of doing more gear than what I have without OD
yes this was a C4 car. I sold it about 2 years ago. If you search Facebook marketplace near Fayetteville Arkansas, it's now up for sale again. After this video I did tune it better and I did get a 7.99 time.
Oh... kind of, but with the oil and tranny leaks it has they'd never let me past tech. It really doesn't bug me. This data is good enough for me. I can tell how it has progressed since it was stock

Major improvement over where the Fairmont started!
Most definitely. Am pretty happy to see the fruits of my labor

The #1 compliment I get on the car
It's good numbers for what you've done. Comfortable cruising car with some power when you want it.
That is the exact sweet spot. Also at that point where merging on the interstate and on ramps and uphill are no issue.
