  • NOTE: My opponent was found to have used computer assistance in this game and was subsequently banned (imgur.com/7l2Ifuu). Although I was likely playing against Stockfish, I decided to post the video anyway because it was an instructive game. Please note that it is never acceptable to cheat in chess (online or otherwise), and the chess community unanimously abhors such behavior.
    I've tried the 5.a3 Austrian Attack before ( • Standard Chess #251: I... ), but here I fail to establish a pawn on e5 early on in the game. Black's trade of the dark-square bishop for the knight (12...Bxc3+!?) sets the tone for this encounter.

      What do you mean? He literally called him a cheater in the title. The humble stuff he said in the video that he doesn't "want to speculate against poor chess players who played a nice game" means jack shit.
      Obviously he was a cheater but John at the end of the day was not humble and there's nothing wrong with that too.

    • @crclayton
      @crclayton 3 года назад

      He only titled it as playing a cheater on RUclips after the account was indeed banned for cheating by lichess - read the description. Once that call is made it’s a totally different situation then just throwing out blind accusations on the fly during a stream. John’s a class fuckin’ act.

    One of the biggest tip offs that you're playing an engine (especially at the sub 2000 level) is when your opponent doesn't make the obvious and crushing move (for example, winning your hanging bishop) but instead makes the totally unobvious and EVEN MORE crushing move that would take a bunch of complicated analysis to justify. If an ordinary online player in a three minute game is passing on simple and powerful moves in order to play artistic moves that a postal chess master would discover only after three hour's thought, he's a fucking cheat.

      I disagree, even 1500 players can find simple intermezzos and turn a won piece into a won piece plus a pawn. Rd2 would not have taken a master 3 hours to find, that's just silly. The much more obvious sign is that every single move was played relatively quickly, the time management in general makes it blatantly obvious.

      @alephnull4044 7 лет назад +24

      Yeah. He knows whenever he's playing a cheater though, he's just professional enough not to say anything about it. The early mysterious draw offer is typical of cheaters - they are desperate for a good result (draw or win) against a titled player.
      Some RUclipsrs however are not so professional and will very quickly accuse their opponents of cheating.

    • @danjeory3659
      @danjeory3659 7 лет назад +9

      Aleph, you have expressed everything I wanted to say perfectly. I also thought the early draw offer was strange. The fact he was blitzing out his moves and then offered a draw when his opponent was taking a long time suggested he was just some inpatient cheat with an engine. John, all credit to you for not calling him out. I admire your professionalism. As you say, Aleph, other streamers would have been quick to insult him.

    I think at the end there you're best bet was to just take with Bxc3 and eat the -2 points in order to free up your other rook before all your pawns disappear. When there are 3 pieces vs 3 pieces, it is no good having 2 of yours locked up for so long. You end up on the short end of a 3 vs 1 (maybe 2.5 vs 1 arguably) for like 15 turns. Better to just make it 3 vs. 2 imho.

    lichess.org/8LHDIT4R/black#58
    It was a draw, 4 centipawn lost vs a 3 centipawn loss LOL! :'-D

      What exactly does centipawn mean? (Pardon my ignorance)

    • @JeffLaRochelle
      @JeffLaRochelle 7 лет назад +4

      Blaine Teague All good. pretty sure it refers to the percentage of a pawn (out of a 100) that you lose with each move on average. with a 3 centipawn loss it would take 34 moves for them to lose a pawn's worth of an advantage! Rates under 10 or 20 denote near perfect play.

    nice instructive game, its just sad how many cheaters there are. In the endgame, as I play the Austrian attack, e5 is tje general idea in most endgames, though without a3.

    John, seeing as this player was a confirmed cheater would Lichess allow you to get your 30 rating points back? It only seems fair seeing as it'll take you a while to get that rating back up

    Hi John, novice player here. Around 10:30 after move 13, you decided to respond with 14. bishop to a2. I was wondering why you didn't consider defending the bishop with Knight to d2? Wouldn't that have been an equal position?

      Eric S. 14. Nd2 Rxd2+ 15. Bxd2 Nxc4 and black is up two pieces for the rook (not a good trade) and has a lovely knight on c4

  • @ConeDaRagusa

    2 moves that lost the game were 1. retreating bishop to a2 instead of attacking a knight by pawn to g4, and when black moved knight on f6, John should have put his pawn imediately on c4 as 2nd move which was not played. Basically he had a bishop on the board but that piece could be considered as if it was out of game...weird decisions...also at 17:20 black square bishop should come to b4 trying to defend c3 and attack knight on a5...helping a bishop from a2 to get back into play...
    Also 13:57 nothing was forced, John should have attacked that knight by pawn, if John loses a knigt on g5, opponent would lose his on f6 and there would be no treat on pawn e4....so it was a series of dubious decisions...
    John opened a line for a rook to inflitrate...therefore he should not move that black square bishop as it was nicely protected by pawn and blocking the line for the rook...bad move definitely..
    21:00 after putting a rook on e3 from e1, going back with the same rook on e1...proves that it was also a bad move...at 21:00 it was a perfect time to sac a bishop by taking a pawn on c4 and get rid of trap and spending so much resources to save the bishop which did not do anything...probably there were ways to activate it by not playing rooks e1-e3 and back to e1...2 lost moves...
    18:50 finally bishop could go from a2 to b1 but John played two moves with the rook losing opprtunity to activate bishop while protecting a pawn at a3...

    So does lichess return your rating points since the player was banned? It would really suck if you lost rating points to a computer, even if it is 'just online chess.'

    It's so frustrating when you play specially against a lower rated player give all of you, try your best, burn your brain and after the game you go to the guy's profile and see the phrase: "this player uses chess computer assistance"... and you realize that no matter what you have done you would lose anyway. That is totaly unfair!

    Seems that IM John got something out of this game despite the fact that he knew he was losing to Stockfish. This guy truly loves chess. I'm guessing that cheaters like alejandroid don't get much out of anything they play. They probably cheat at solitaire and pat themselves on the back when they win. By the way, I have learned more good chess from watching IM John than from any of the books I have studied. Thanks.

    If his rating was over 2200 than why cheat? I may ever win if he just play has game. The highest rated player I beaten was over 2200 and depending on the site I play on I'm anywhere between 1000 and 1700, I know a big range, but I play more like a 1400 to 1600. The 2200 just play my game and made a mistake late in the game.

  • @anttt7993
    @anttt7993 Год назад

    I like to think that cheaters, when they have to wait for the opponent to calculate a move against the unfair advantage, are bored. That's why he offered a draw. He knew that John was going to take his sweet time with the moves, while the cheater still had a full 15 minutes. It can't be enjoyable for more than a few minutes. Pathetic behavior
    Even though this is unpleasant for John, I have to admit that it's interesting to watch from a dramatic standpoint. John won't throw out an accusation of cheating, so it's interesting to try to note as he becomes more convinced that he is playing an engine. It becomes more obvious towards the end, but I noticed that he barely complimented the opponent's play throughout. Rather, he was self-deprecating - focusing on his own "poor" play. I think that he knew early on that it was an engine because normally he would be complimenting the opponent more enthusiastically. More cheating vids! haha

      It's a technology used to execute native C++ code in a browser like Google Chrome. It's a lot faster than - for example - Javascript and even supports multiple threads. It is used by lichess.org to let you run a version of Stockfish on your own machine for live analysis. See more at: developer.chrome.com/native-client/nacl-and-pnacl

    There is nothing you can do to stop cheating short of requesting video and desktop recording. The person can still be holding a phone or laptop with an engine on. Playing online is overall like playing any other toxic online game. Any thoughts?
