"A chess game has three phases: 1) Where you hope you have the advantage. 2) Where you think you have the advantage. 3) When you know you're going to lose." - Tartakower
John, for future reference: Lichess has a built-in endgame tablebase that you can access by clicking on the same button you use to access the opening database.
There's a lot of speculation that White in this game is Brazilian Grandmaster Rafael Leitão. Awesome if true, but does anyone have any proof? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Leit%C3%A3o
Hi John. It would be a pleasure to play against you, but that's not me in this game. I don't even have an account in lichess. Congratulations on your great channel!
John! it will be cool if you use the lichess endgame tablebase, which is the same as the opening book sign, u will discover that actually this game was a draw till move 86!
John Bartholomew the only channel for which I turn on notifications. It's 1am and I have to work in 6 hours, but there's always time for chess! Thank you for the videos!!!
SPOILERS: Awesome to see an opening that is far from a main line. You played it really well. Your opponent played great in the end game to give up the rook to queen and then win the Q vs RP. Great analysis, as usual. Thanks for the upload.
Hi John, What you think play 38.Bg5 (instead 38. Kg8) with idea to play Bd8 and Bc7 with ideia to create a passed pawn with ...d6,...d5. And I'm a bit curious about what Brazilian's guys talk in chat: that your oponente is Brazilian GM. Rafael Leitão.

No Julio, it wasn't me. I have never played in lichess.
Hey John, loving the run of standard vids recently. Do you have any upcoming OTB tournaments? I see your recent strong showing in the MN Open bumped you up the rating ladder a few points. Hopefully, this is the start of a run at another norm? Keep up the good fight, we'll keep watching.
Interestingly, the position you were analysing around 1:02:00 (move 86) is actually a draw, according to lichess endgame tablebases, which you can enable by clicking the book icon next to the arrows you can use to scroll through the moves.
Because he would only be gaining a very poor Queen position, which could easily become trapped, and also allow White dominance of the a file, all in return for just a pawn. Better to play on as he did and obtain the pawn with the least amount of risk involved.
Hi John, my first comment after watching dozens (maybe hundreds?) of your videos. I haven't found a chess RUclipsr to match you, your videos are entertaining, instructive and really pleasant to watch as well - I really like the way you respect your opponents and give them due credit. My wife is even happy to watch when I am chromecasting to the TV (it probably helps that you're a handsome devil). I love the lichess bullet tourneys, but I must admit, this slower format is more instructive even if it's slightly less entertaining. I was silently screaming when you seemed to slow down with around 5 minutes on your clock - even though you'd just admonished yourself to speed up! I was intrigued by the possible fortress before you advanced ...f3 and, as others have pointed out, it really is an amazing fortress position. I confirmed it in a different way, using my own Tarrasch Chess GUI (shameless promo). I haven't got a tablebase feature (yet?) but I do have a "capture kibitz" feature and that shows quickly that Stockfish cannot improve its eval. I used the same technique during the World Champs to prove to myself that Karjakin was successfully creating fortresses (when there were too many pieces for tablebases [I think])
Great videos! Even though I'm an FM, I'm going to watch as many as I can. Always learn something. Your endgame videos on rook and pawn versus rook are the best I've ever seen. Would be great to see some with more than one pawn.
In lichess, you can check Nalimov endgame tablebases for up to 6 pieces. So, after 61...Kxg5 the site's "opening explorer" turns into the "endgame explorer" and you can tell how the game would end with perfect play. Fun fact, there is a reason why the engine is shuffling around at the end: the position after move 74 is a draw: en.lichess.org/ARFNw6mt#147 It's hard to tell if one can learn the defensive technique for this position analyzing these tablebases, but it sure is great to have them.
Hi John. In your first game, you chose to play 7...Nc6. Now, so many masters tell us that, in queen pawn openings, the one thing black should NOT do is block in his c-pawn. I'm not clear as to what your justification for this move was, other than avoiding a queen exchange.
Any reason you're playing 15+2 instead of a more forgiving increment? I tend to go 15+10 or 15+15 to almost completely prevent having to blitz the middlegame.
Great video as usual! I think lichess has a 6 piece tablebase you can bring up in analysis for positions like the KQ v KRP endgame you played here. Thanks again for making great chess content!
It's very unlikely that John's opponent was playing without computer assistance: 9 average centi-pawn loss with 0 mistakes and 0 blunders. Some time after this game, Lichess flagged the player's account as a cheater: lichess.org/@/Duailibe_L
Just something I noticed in analyzing with you, John. You're still a much better player than me. I notice that you tend to overthink things instead of relying on your intuitions in a lot of situations. While this can be good, I feel it is what leads to your time management issues in certain situations. Intuition tells your one thing; then you start looking at something else. Suddenly, there's no time left! Just something to think about. You should trust yourself more. You're a good player!
Sorry to disappoint you, but that's not me. I don't even have an account in lichess. You can check my games on my channel - my style is quite different that the guy playing white.
Not sure how good of a database it is, but ChessTempo says after 4. Be2 it's a completely new game. Though there have been 3 games that transposed into the same position after the next move (Bb7), then it's a completely new game again after 5. Bf3.
John, great game and video, as usual. I guess time is the only weapon us weaklings actually have against chess monsters like yourself ;) You know, an interesting question I got to think about just now (which isn't pure chess, I believe. It may also involve mathematics/logic, but I'll try and ask it here) - on a chess board of infinite size (= infinite number of squares), assuming regular chess rules apply, can one even win? My gut tells me the king will always be able to maneuver and escape checkmate. Thanks for taking the time to share with us, John. Much appreciated by beginners like myself! :) Kindest regards, Arye.
aryesegal1988 If the board is infinite, a rook and Queen or some combination could checkmate as they would infinitely lock down files. The King could possibly be reduced to going to C100 or C98 because the D and B files are locked down.
Right. forgot a combination of pieces could create a "closing square" around the king and always reduce it size to minimize its escape routes. Thanks for the answer :]

No, it wasn't me, Felipe. I am afraid someone is trying to use my name on lichess. I don't know any Duailibe (my middle name) who can play at such a level. However I must state very clearly that I didn't play this game.
i was yelling in my head for you to move faster,he was obviously setting up a time hustle when he started playing his moves so fast you should have just played decent moves instead of trying to find the absolute best. still a great game.
How are you so mild-tempered? When I lose I'm so upset with myself - there's no way I'd be able to hide it... I wish I could be objective about it like you.
Hey John, I have 1 question for you: Why and where do you consider the double Fianchetto to be good? PS: The first time I saw you channel a few weeks ago I knew your last name reminded me of someone. Well, I found him here at 1m49s -> ruclips.net/video/sTKHzjh1mUk/видео.html lol
People were speculating he was GM Rafael Leitão, n.01 GM in Brazil that recently participated in the World Cup, but Rafael himself said it wasn't him and that he doesn't have an account on lichess. The endgame technique was pretty great, but this player's opening seemed a bit sloppy indeed.
correct english is 'fewer islands' not 'less islands' as its referring to a plural (grr), ruining all of a great game, great channel and also my christmas
Vitto Fair enough in that case. I assumed Lichess would have picked up on that. They're clearly a very good player, but John does seem to have a fairly good advantage at some points.
John, that's a Brazilian GM you just played: Mr Rafael Leitão. His highest FIDE rating was 2652. ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Leit%C3%A3o www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=43109
Around 2:45 you said you might be in an original position - a quick search in an 8.2 million game database says yes: that position is original. Neat!

John Bartholomew other than the fact that Duailibe is his middle name and L might refer to leitao, none that I can prove :)
John Bartholomew I think the fact that he uses Portuguese in the chat might support that speculation? as well as his endgame prowess, maybe.
Several things indeed suggest so, I can say :)
Thibault Duplessis Oh, Thibault. You tease!
Hi John. It would be a pleasure to play against you, but that's not me in this game. I don't even have an account in lichess. Congratulations on your great channel!
John! it will be cool if you use the lichess endgame tablebase, which is the same as the opening book sign, u will discover that actually this game was a draw till move 86!
No! It would be accurate to say that white blundered a won game on move 74, and black blundered a drawn game on move 86.
Jeez you guys are fast! (John A and flooblet)
John Bartholomew shows how interesting is your channel :)
360p squad represent!
John Bartholomew Best end to a long day. Thanks for sharing your talent John.

John Bartholomew I WEAR A COLLAR THAT SHOCKS ME WHENEVER YOU UPLOAD BROTHER
Great vid as always John! Protip: that little opening book below the move list also has an endgame tablebase :)
SPOILERS: Awesome to see an opening that is far from a main line. You played it really well. Your opponent played great in the end game to give up the rook to queen and then win the Q vs RP. Great analysis, as usual. Thanks for the upload.
Loving these slower time controls. Thanks! They're very instructive.
Watching your chess videos always inspires me as an improving player. Hope you get those GM norms John!
loving these new standard games john there really improving my chess game
All set for 1 hour. Thanks John.

LOL!
Nice game john! Great to see a higher rated player :)
Interestingly, the position you were analysing around 1:02:00 (move 86) is actually a draw, according to lichess endgame tablebases, which you can enable by clicking the book icon next to the arrows you can use to scroll through the moves.
I checked the endgame with a database and it's a draw until the 86th move.
Yeah Rook and Pawn vs Queen with White's bad king position at first should've been drawn. He panicked under time pressure, I think.
At 13:15, why couldn't you have taken on a3 with the rook? If he takes back, Qb1+ and you win the far rook, no?
Because he would only be gaining a very poor Queen position, which could easily become trapped, and also allow White dominance of the a file, all in return for just a pawn. Better to play on as he did and obtain the pawn with the least amount of risk involved.
I love these longer games, thank you
John, why not play 15 + 10? It allows for a game of far higher quality and fewer endgame time scrambles because clock pressure is less of an issue.
Hey John, loved the game & video, and the opening was very interesting. I haven't seen any theory on it, could you recommend anything?
Hi John, my first comment after watching dozens (maybe hundreds?) of your videos. E6 possible at 12:55 ? Goal to distract Knight from defense of C3 square for future Queen move into B2 - also delays castle for him
16... e6 then 17. Ne7+ Kh8 18. Nxc6 Qxc6 19. Qxc6 dxc6 is good for white.
I see, thanks for feedback
MY HERO JMAN
Easily your best content. Cant wait to watch more of these!

5 vídeos everyday should be the minimum in this channel
time to take coffee and watch the legend of chess

Mainly just due to time constraints and consistency, but going forward I may mix in some longer increments and base times.
That makes sense. I guess it also forces you to work on your time management, which historically has been something you want to improve?
Great video as usual! I think lichess has a 6 piece tablebase you can bring up in analysis for positions like the KQ v KRP endgame you played here. Thanks again for making great chess content!
What are some potential drawbacks of using a double fianchetto setup?
It's very unlikely that John's opponent was playing without computer assistance: 9 average centi-pawn loss with 0 mistakes and 0 blunders. Some time after this game, Lichess flagged the player's account as a cheater: lichess.org/@/Duailibe_L
@27:09: I think f5 would seal the extra pawn advantage.
So.... Is it a fortress or nah? Because it's really interesting!
It is a fortress as can be seen with the built-in endgame tablebase in the lichess analysis board. ;)
Just something I noticed in analyzing with you, John. You're still a much better player than me.
I notice that you tend to overthink things instead of relying on your intuitions in a lot of situations. wow the fact that the position before f3?? is actually drawn is amazing
Hi John one question:
20. Ra8 wins the exchange or I'm missing something?
queen takes and when recaptured its a vackrank mate with the other rook (i hope we are talking about the same moment in the game)
Right! ;)
Will you ever make videos where you analyze viewer games?
hulyklop1 Yup, I have some plans in the works.
what about 10. d5?
Wouldn't it be a draw if u moved Rh3 on move 68?
Nice! Thanks for uploading more 15|2 :)
Good game! Please accept my heartfelt condolences for you and your clock. =)
i seriously love this opening
Despite the extra pawn for Black, it seems that White was benefiting from his 4 pawns being connected.
@john bartholomew what chess website do you think is the best. You used to always use chess.com now you use lichess.
Logan Collins lichess has free full analysis and free unlimited tactics, top notch site
john!! you just played against a 2600 brazillian GM (2x world champion U-12 and U-18) his name is Rafael Leitao
Que bacana!! Não sabia.
Vou seguir ele agora.
Pois é, muito legal!
Eu vi ele falando Português ali no chat, não sabia que era o Rafael. hahaha
Orgulho :)
Sorry to disappoint you, but that's not me. I don't even have an account in lichess. You can check my games on my channel - my style is quite different that the guy playing white.
Wow that rook sacrifice! This dude is a strong player!

i dun understand this game, but i see u have a beard. that means u should act responsibly.
Always.
this is Brasilian GM leitão dualibe?
Felipe Rodrigues Someone mentioned that in the chat, but I couldn't get confirmation.
Probably the confirmation is the rook sac in the endgame :) I highly doubt a non-titled player could find that idea in a 15 min game.
Felipe Rodrigues they were speaking portuguese in the chat
No, it wasn't me, Felipe. I am afraid someone is trying to use my name on lichess. I don't know any Duailibe (my middle name) who can play at such a level. However I must state very clearly that I didn't play this game.
Academia Rafael Leitão na verdade esse cara é um usuário de engine, apareceu na conta dele
i was yelling in my head for you to move faster,he was obviously setting up a time hustle when he started playing his moves so fast you should have just played decent moves instead of trying to find the absolute best. still a great game.
How are you so mild-tempered? When I lose I'm so upset with myself - there's no way I'd be able to hide it... I wish I could be objective about it like you.
Great game. Loving the beard. Keep it.
Ay nice timing
Yessss
Love the fianchettoed queen
Rafael Duailibe Leitao, he is a GM from Brazil. Nice game.
mpf mpf from br and didn't know this guy, thx for the info
I am really worried everybody thinks I was playing this game...but you can check my channel and see that my style of play is quite different.
today I went skiing the powder was up to my knees.
Well... sleep is overrated anyways.
John, that guy is Rafael Leitão, a very strong brazilian GM, many times brazilian champion.
No, it wasn't me...you can check my channel to see my real games. 3.e3 is not my style...Anyway I aprecciate the "very strong brazilian GM" :)
amazing endmage
Notice how he looks at the camera with an accusing eye when he says he has to do better with the time.
bummer you lost, but that sure was an exciting game for sure
Hey John, I have 1 question for you: Why and where do you consider the double Fianchetto to be good?
PS: The first time I saw you channel a few weeks ago I knew your last name reminded me of someone. Well, I found him here at 1m49s -> ruclips.net/video/sTKHzjh1mUk/видео.html
lol
Not often you get to fianchetto your queen.
have a good day john :^)
Nice game!
the guy had a chess assistant.
This appears to have been a GM, though judging by his opening play, well, it would not have seemed likely...so maybe not
People were speculating he was GM Rafael Leitão, n.01 GM in Brazil that recently participated in the World Cup, but Rafael himself said it wasn't him and that he doesn't have an account on lichess. The endgame technique was pretty great, but this player's opening seemed a bit sloppy indeed.

The clock got the best of him...
thats what can happen folks when you are realy low on time and your opponant is much better
His opponent isn't much better if at all.
His opponent has a lower rating at the start of the game, and isn't titled. Dubious to call them better, to say the least.
leerobbo92 apparently the opponent is a brazilian GM rated 2600
tedteddy28 "much better" ? Idk about that...
Vitto Fair enough in that case. I assumed Lichess would have picked up on that. They're clearly a very good player, but John does seem to have a fairly good advantage at some points.
NICE GAME
another Standard game?? awww sheeeeitt. perfect!
i wonder why lichess say this guy uses engine
He’s since been flagged as a computer cheater, and just adds to the reason I don’t participate in the online chess playing circus.
O leitão gosta de posições mas simplificadas..
notification squad ! :DDD
You should hit up Hutch, he's looking for GM's and IM's to stream with him and teach him some things. Would love to see a collab between you two.
John, that's a Brazilian GM you just played: Mr Rafael Leitão. His highest FIDE rating was 2652. ;-)

Sorry, not me :)
Nice game, John. However, the layout of the video was a little sloppy. Come on, you can do better!
He's just 7-times brazilian champion hehehe...
then why did his account got banned
Duailibe_L account banned for cheating.....no surprise there
You are commentating your opponent isnt
