I recently watched a quilter's video (wish I could remember who...) she said we began pressing seams to one side to contain the batting and prevent bearding. I always wondered this! And since modern batting doesn't beard so much, keeping seams open is an option again :) Now we have decisions to make!
A few quilts that I've made really benefited from having it seems pressed open. However when I stitched in the ditch I kept feeling like I was breaking the threads with the needle. I donated those quilts so I wasn't around for repeated washings. I'm curious to know if anyone's had problems with those seams ripping open?
Great video, Kim! I just tried this on my most recent quilt, and I love the "flatness" of the seams. However, I found it VERY difficult to match the seams of my blocks because with seams open, there is no "nesting." Do you have any thoughts or tips on how to do this? Thanks much! 😁
I use Acorn Precision Piecing's Seam Align Glue to match all my seams. It's much easier to precisely ensure seam matching over pins and I love that it is a temporary hold and easy to pull the fabrics apart if needed. You can find a video on it at ruclips.net/video/R1S5x4g7DKk/видео.html.
When you stitch in the ditch with seams pressed open you are only stitching on the stitches that are holding the two fabric pieces together. I'm still skeptical this is going to be a good way to quilt something that is going to be washed regularly. I'll sew up a sample like you did and keep tossing it in the wash and see what it looks like after multiple washing.

This didn’t work for me. I made a quilt using pressed open, stitch in the ditch and after 5 years of washer/dryer there were so many broken threads in the ditch I had to resew all the ditches with a wider zigzag it looks not great.

I use pins and pin on either side of the intersection. It works great and everything lines up perfectly!
So if you are pressing to one side and stitching in the ditch are you stitching on the one layer of fabric or the three layers of fabric?
You are really stitching right in the centre of the seam but only on one layer of fabric. The one with the 3 layers is the "hump" (technical term 😉)
