I have to leave another comment, this video has changed my world. I have completed two quilts using these instructions and I have No stretching of fabric, perfect nesting of seams, no hidden pleats! My quilt are not far off square at the end of the process. Thank you so much! Knowledge is a powerful thing. 💖💖💖
I am also a beginner quilter and new to your channel. I have watched dozens of quilting videos and yours is the best. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. You are a true joy to watch. Jean
We had a family friend that sewed all the clothing for her 4 girls, even all of their underwear! When asked how she did it, she replied, " I sew with my iron." That has stuck with me for over 50 years! Thanks for the tips.
Love how you tutor in a pleasant & helpful way without judging. Instead, you speak from experience and share how our quilting lives can be easier, faster, better. Also, love having Holly appear in your vids. Good stuff all around!
Hi Karen, I rewatched this video this morning while drinking my coffee. It was a good reminder for me to slow down when pressing my seams and blocks. I miss your walking talks because I enjoy the scenery. I also enjoyed seeing Holly, she was patiently looking out the window while you were talking. I always enjoy your videos ❤
About to start my first quilt I am 80 so time to try I have not sewed for 25 years...even bought a new sewing machine. I will send a picture of the result not fast just had a stroke...here I go LOVE you show been watching for last 3 months....
"You're not giving a massage..." LOVE IT!!! I love your sense of humor. You explained perfectly why my squares are no longer square when I've ironed them. So glad to know!
Your demonstration using the woven paper was very effective, thank you! I’ve tried to always set my seams and press with the iron (not always successful with the press) but hadn’t known about the finger press in-between. I’m encouraged this will help me reduce the possibility of ‘wonky’ blocks. 😊
I am a novice quilter, have been binge watching so many RUclips videos. Yours are by far the most helpful and I love your Alton Brown ‘Good Eats’ approach in your content. Very entertaining also! Thank you for all you do!
Thank you for describing your ironing technique so clearly. Many videos assume the viewer knows, well, anything! Haha. I can’t tell you how many wonky blocks I’ve made. Not that it stops me, I plod along as fearlessly as possible. I love your videos and you are fun like a favourite aunt or sister to learn quilting from. There’s sew! much more to it than I first thought.
I had no idea you were lost , buttt I just found you and I am hooked . I'm 64 and disabled but love to stay busy , learning new things , doing things I know how to do. I've been binge watching and just love the masking tape video , the rest is like a refresher course. Love your upbeat , can do attitude. Have a Blessed weekend.
I am working on a baby quilt and applying all your ironing techniques. It’s really working! My block sizes are exact and my seams are nesting. THANK YOU!
Just watched this last night and applied this concept to the log cabin quilt I’m making. My second quilt ever. The final squares were getting smaller and not square. You are right, this ironing method has made a huge difference! They are supposed to be 18 inches finished and I’m not quite there but this technique has made a 1/4 to 1/2 inch difference!!! Thank you!!!!
The finger press step - what a game-changer! I'm in the midst of a BOM quilt that has many small pieces thus many seams. I went back to this video & re-watched it. So my first blocks will probably have to be re-done - but not any of the ones I made after watching this. Thank you, Karen.
I am two days into quilting and I am in love with your videos, ironing, quilting hacks and beginner quilting video’s have already boosted my confidence of becoming a quilter! You are amazing, thank you for your expertise and willingness to share openly and honestly! I look forward to spending more time learning from you!
I am a beginner. I love watching your tricks and tips. Thank for teaching me about fabrics and how finger pressing works. Thank you so much! Your personality and knowledge is so refreshing and you are a wonderful teacher. Thank you so much for sharing.
I've always pressed my seams every which way. This is a game changer! It's been 30+ years sewing on my own.. basic squares into quilts and holiday crafts. So grateful for your tutorial on ironing, as well as your other videos! I've learned a lot about fabrics over the years, but have been stuck in a rut by my limited understanding. I'm so excited to move forward thanks to all you've shared. Don't stop quilting!
I have been quilting for 10 years and your ironing hacks have been a complete game changer for me! I have watched tons of videos on the 1/4" seam allowance, and cutting, but not ironing. I'm working on a difficult pattern with half rectangle triangles, where the points and angles matter a ton! If it wasn't for the ironing techniques I would be tearing my hair out. Thank you a ton!
Thank you so much for these pressing tips! I have been sewing for over 50 years and you are the first person to tell me not to swish!!! No more swishing for me!,
What great tips! This 3-step pressing technique is most often forgotten in our rush to "get it done", resulting in less than desirable results. Such good reminders, and I particularly appreciate understanding the science behind why it works. Thanks so much!
Finally! Something on pressing that makes sense. I have wracked my brains trying to figure out why my blocks were so off. I have obsessed over the measuring and cutting. Then I've sewn, picked, and re-sewn my blocks only to have them distorted and out of whack. I think I this is the answer to my problem. I iron like a man! A real man! That means 500° and smoking and scorching fabric. LOL! I'm excited to try this because I was getting discouraged.
@@rebeccaadame2799 I'm back watching this again a year later. This video is the one video that was a huge turning point for me. I was ready to chip the whole enchilada. JGIDQ has the best videos I've seen for genuine education.
You don't need VLOG!!! Everything you do is great already. Adding in photos or videos of howto's is enough. Making coffee not needed. We all appreciate you just as you are
Finally, an explanation on setting the seams. Now I know why I need to do this and I will no longer skip it. Thank you! Love your videos, you're an A+++++ teacher. Cheers! Angela
I'm about to be a beginner, and I've been going through many quilting videos to understand what I am embarking on. I love these 'tips'! You're giving gold here. Thank you!
She is absolutely a GOLD mine of tips, tricks and strategies! I discovered her (I believe) in the middle of or towards the fall of 2020 when I was just starting out quilting and immediately subscribed! I have learned a SO MUCH from Karen! She's my number one go-to on RUclips. She's helped me learn how to do everything from iron correctly to organize my life with a bullet journal. Karen Brown has definitely made an impact on my life🤗😁🤗😁🤗
I was taught this stuff originally, then saw people (instructing) ironing vs pressing. They said the material is better now-a-days. Well, it ruined my wall quilt that I struggled to make due to wet macular degeneration. I'm going back to this technique! I am praying I will be able to continue quilting for a very long time in spite of my vision loss.
Hi there - clearly I'm late to the game, but I found you this morning through your "Ugly Fabrics" video, and now I'm here, and next I'll be popping over to the diy ironing board... and productivity just came to a screeching halt!! I really enjoyed this video - so clever, the way you change locations and keep it interesting. It's during COVID-19, and I'm trying to figure out how to keep my Grade 1/2 students engaged in this remote learning thing. Not only have you inspired me to try that "ugly fabric" quilt, but I'm also going to try some of your setting change techniques with my lessons! Not that you needed to know all that, but - now you do! Thanks again - I'm so pleased I've discovered your channel!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've never, ever had anyone go over the do,'s & don'ts for me before. I've even had my husband watch this too, as he sometimes gives me a hand with the iron. Thanks again Karen. Hugs from Milford CT!!
Thanks Karen what a wonderful quilting information session! I used to live in New Hampshire, learned French now in Texas Spanish would have been more useful Haha.
I have been strictly garment sewing for a while, and I've recently decided to get into quilting. I am so glad I discovered your channel, because it's been sort of a "back to basics" thing for me in many ways, but I'm also learning a lot of techniques that I never got the chance to learn in the first place.
I love your videos so much!!! I've only watched three so far!!!! I'm gonna be busy watching your smiley sweet face!!!!!! I've never heard of wonky!?! before LOL...Great Videos!!!!!
Is steam really necessary? Can I substitute spritzing with distilled water? Love your videos - can’t imagine discussing seams outside in freezing cold, but whatever floats your boat.
I have been sewing for 50 yrs my mother in law was German and Russian and I learned a lot about sewing from her and quilting and she hand pressed her seams when quilting and she also hand quilted her quilts but you have given me some really great time saving ideas while sewing thank you for sharing and I am so glad that I have found you and PS I really love the clothes line rope baskets trays and bags ....I thought of a great idea for in the trunk of cars or back of SUV’s making square rope bags for items that you would put tools in or groceries in so as they don’t roll around in back of your vehicle and could be carried in the house in theses bags and then taken back to the vehicle when groceries are put away I just love that again thank you
Oh my! I see why we must not swish! When you opened that final square- the blue and red one- I instinctively felt my mind telling my hand to use the edge of the iron to push the seam open and flat! Wow. This is eye-opening for me.
Oh my gosh! I'm new. Starting my first HST quilt ever to thank my mother in law for helping me learn to quilt. I'm more nervous than I was before, but armed with more helpful knowledge!! I was pretty excited that I got through cutting blocks from fabric!! Today I'm stitching. Thank you for these very clear, easy to understand examples. I will be back at intermission to revisit them I'm sure!
I did not expect this video to be as much of a game changer as it was!! I’m a complete beginner and making house blocks for a quilt with family, and they went from wonky to lovely after I started following this! Thank you for the time you took to make this video, it really helped ❤️
Man I wish I would have seen this before! I’ve been teaching myself to quilt this winter and have had all these problems. Thanks so much for your approach and information. You are easy to understand and very relatable.😀
I just came across your instructional video & I knew INSTANTLY that I had to subscribe to your channel❣ You have a gift of teaching your techniques so that I can understand them! I tend to try to be a perfectionist when putting blocks together & this video will save me from a "do over"! I also love your bubbly personality & being a huge animal lover, I admire your dedication to endure the COLD WEATHER so that your beautiful dog can enjoy the great outdoors🤗 To say that I'm looking forward to your videos is an understatement! Have a very blessed day today❣
I shall remember this technique when pressing my blocks and I have many which I have to press which has been cut out and just boxed up by my grandmother many years ago. Since my mother was not into quilting she didn't use the fabric it was stored away and I ended up with it along with her sewing machine which I have to put back in use before I am too old to do anything with any of it. Thanks so much for the information on pressing the pattern blocks and making sure the blocks are straight like I want them to be.
Your videos expose such real problems in sewing. I have been sewing for 60 years and really love your sewing techniques. You’re never too old to learn!!
Hi, i recently discovered your channel, i love how you combine nature with quilting instructions, you keep my attention through the whole video. Keep up the good work!👍
I just discovered your channel this morning. What fun to see you in the snow. I live in AZ so while you're in the snow I'm in a heated pool outside!😂 Thx for the great tip on ironing & that I don't have to buy a $300 iron!!!
I am so glad I found you!!! I’m going to work on unlearning a lot of bad habits and relearning. I’m hoping to fall in love with quilting again. Thank you!!!!
Oh my word "Lightbulb moment"! That is now taken in. Yaay! If you can, will you please address the use of stiffeners on the fabric and ironing. I generally like to starch but good especially if I am going to embroider. I want crisp edges and keeping the fabric's fibers motionless and in place. Oh, I hope you can speak to that for us. Thanks for enhancing my sewing life!
Faery Fox:: I just was reading your comment & wanted to share that I usually starch my fabrics after washing them, before rotary cutting. But if U do starch, do NOT use steam, steam stretches the fabric fibers, which defeats the purpose of starching, if U follow...I’m with U, love the crispness of the starched fabric & it’s much easier to cut & sew if it’s been starched & ironed properly! Also, when I iron the starched fabric before cutting, I don’t iron the fabric like it is clothing, I iron in one direction (usually from the top of the board towards me) & no ‘swishing’ the iron, keep it straight & smooth in nice long sweeps... Lastly, if U do use starch, spray on fabric & let it “settle” into the fabric a few seconds, otherwise it will get all over your iron plate & make a mess, it needs to ‘soak’ into the fabric, U will see what I mean-if U haven’t noticed previously! HTH’s 😊👍❗️❗️
UPDATE: Thank you to everyone for entering the fabric giveaway. The winner is June Dodge. Thank you everyone for watching. I hope you try out this technique and see the changes in your quilting. Don't forget to check out the fabric GIVEAWAY. Draw is on Feb 15h 2019
So simple, yet a VERY important concept you are discerning to folks. Thank you so much for your channel; I'm a fairly new subbie here and bingeing on your vlogs.LOL.
Oh my gosh, NOW I know WHY everything is crooked in my sewing. I will no more swish, go back and forth with my iron and I will watch your video 10 more times so I DONT forget. You have such great tips! Thank U!
First time viewer! Thank you so much for explaining proper ironing technique. I have never had any formal quilting training--mostly from family, so this was very helpful!
I absolutely love your videos. I have learned so much in such a short time. The simple advice like the ironing thing; I was doing EVERYTHING wrong. Thank you!
You make me want to be a better quilter. Not that I'm actually a "Quilter" like you, but as I'm finally beginning to make the time and investment into my life long dream, I just want to be really good at it. I lost my house October 8, 2017 in the northern California fires and am still living in my RV. Not only do I have a "sewing area", I also teach private music lessons (guitar, ukulele, banjo, voice, and piano) in my RV :-) And yes, I have a piano in here too. My point is this: I am so serious about learning this beautiful craft that I have discarded other 'things' to make room for what's most important, quilting and music :-) I'm planning to do as you said in another video "Start small and simple", so I started with a table runner and placemats, and a quilt for my granddaughters 18th birthday. I want to be good at this so I can give other fire victims a beautiful quilt. Everything now is brand new and store bought as all the old stuff, including snuggly blankets, were destroyed. I've only made 2 quilts in my entire life, and that was almost 20 years ago, (I'm 61) but I'm getting started again, and I'm so excited, and hope to make LOTS of beautiful things :-) Thank you so much for your AWESOME videos! You inspire me!
Oh you’re so funny! Looking sideways at the camera with your head on the pressing surface! Seriously though, this is all great information and I did like the chemistry lesson too! Many thanks.
Loved the video. I’m a new quilter and I love a good “tips” video. Pressing correctly and getting minimal distortion and excellent points is a great feeling!!!
I just stumbled onto your channel and I really liked the tips on ironing fused with the great outdoors and a furbaby, too! I've been a beginner for more than a few years, but hoping to get more time and experience quilting. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning gaining more skills. Thank you for sharing!
Your techniques saved me. I haven't pieced in 20 years. Last year I sewed a quilt for my 3 year old grandson. Not one point matched and the blocks were not square. After watching your video lesson, my current baby quilt (grand daughter coming in July) has all matching points and blocks are square!!!!!!! Thanks you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I've been watching your videos since 6 a.m. today and I am so impressed. Very clear, informative and to the point without a lot of gibberish and blabble. I don't think my iron and I will ever have the same relationship--AND I'M THRILLED. THIS explains so much... I'm sitting here gobsmacked over how wrong I've been doing my ironing my entire life. The stack of linen skirts and dresses that I've been afraid to launder makes me want to cry when I look at it. This is life-changing stuff, ma'am! Thank you!
I'm going to try this out. Another Question- when you are doing a scrap or crumb quilt and have a LOT of seams and ragged edges, does this still work? I'm trying to understand more about that version of finger pressing. Do you do this before every single press? What about with big piecesbof long strips? Further, I have seen seam rollers on some pther RUclips channels. Could you use this instead of finger pressing?
Yes. I am a scrappy quilter and it's just perfect for scraps. Just be aware of the bias and avoid stretching it. It becomes habit very quickly as the results are worth it. I do it with small and large, long and short. It's a much faster step once your fingers know what they are doing. I do have a seam roller. I use it mostly for paper piecing where the seam are secured by paper and less delicate. When I don't have the paper, I roll in the same direction of my finger press.
Once you remember to finger press each seam it does become second nature and you'll see a big difference. It took me a little time to remember but I sure picked it up fast when I'd check my work. :)
I just turned 70 and want to learn to quilt and thank you so much for your wonderful tips. I am trying the ironing as you showed and my seams look so much better.
I watched this video and did a serious head shake and are you serious.. this is what I've been doing wrong. I had all the problems she went over as a beginner and thank goodness I saw this as I am starting a quilt for my son. The 3 videos (cutting, sewing straight and ironing) are fantastic for us beginners or those who have the problems she was talking about. THANK you for posting this.
I have been sewing for 42 years. Your explanation of why is so important for those that need understanding as part of the learning process. I have never been told the why. Thank you!
I've been meaning to watch this for a while but kept putting it off as there were more 'exciting things to watch. Now I just wish I had watched it when I first saw it. Simple tips but they've made such a difference to my ironing of my quilts. Thank you so much.
I have sewn for years. I learned a lot, maybe my blocks will be flatter now. Great information. My daughter is just starting to quilt, I will pass this information to her. Thank you very much for so much good stuff.
LOVE the way you explain things about quilting. I keep wondering if you were a science teacher in a previous life. I hope so, the way you explain/ teach about quilting helps me so much.
I watched this a few months ago. Well, gee whiz I watched again and this time-- I PAID ATTENTION!
LOL...it makes a difference. Glad you watched twice
Your videos never get old. I refer back to them periodically just as a reminder on proper technique. Thanks!
It's good to return to the foundations as your skills grow. You can apply what your have learned and see the nuances that you miss as a beginner

Who’d have thought that there’s a right way to iron! You can teach an old dog new tricks💕
I love her videos. She gets right to the point and doesn’t babble on about. Where I could lose my interest in the topic. This is important to me.
Thanks for watching
I shall remember this technique when pressing my blocks and I have many which I have to press which has been cut out and just boxed up by my grandmother many years ago. Since my mother was not into quilting she didn't use the fabric it was stored away and I ended up with it along with her sewing machine which I have to put back in use before I am too old to do anything with any of it. Thanks so much for the information on pressing the pattern blocks and making sure the blocks are straight like I want them to be.
"Press to the dark side" is my rule in life in general. "Look to the Force, Luke."
🤣🖤
Your videos expose such real problems in sewing. I have been sewing for 60 years and really love your sewing techniques. You’re never too old to learn!!
I find if I can connect the why? to the technique, I'm more motivated to do the extra step
I cannot believe how much I learn from each of your videos! I would probably “give up,” if I didn’t have your videos to view!
great tips, thanks, i am guilty of sometimes setting seams and swishing. You didn’t mention about to steam or not to steam when ironing.
Hi, i recently discovered your channel, i love how you combine nature with quilting instructions, you keep my attention through the whole video. Keep up the good work!👍
Thank you
Just found you and subscribed.
I just discovered your channel this morning. What fun to see you in the snow. I live in AZ so while you're in the snow I'm in a heated pool outside!😂 Thx for the great tip on ironing & that I don't have to buy a $300 iron!!!
Thanks for watching
Have been sewing and quilting for years - this explains everything!!! NO more swishing!! and the finger press - who knew!
I always say , while sewing ,you PRESS !! You are not doing laundry , do not iron. 💕💕 Happy quilting ans sewing.
This was a great video with explanations and examples! I learned a lot. Thank you!!!
Quilting for 1.5 years and just found you! Where have I been? Love new and useful tips!! Now to binge watch your tuts.
Good explanation of pressing dos and don't. Visual examples are spot on.
I will give this a try. Thanks for sharing. I love your video's
Oh my gosh, NOW I know WHY everything is crooked in my sewing. I will no more swish, go back and forth with my iron and I will watch your video 10 more times so I DONT forget. You have such great tips! Thank U!
I have learned more watching your videos tonight than I have in 10 yrs of quilting with people. Thank you and keep them coming
Thank you
First time viewer! Thank you so much for explaining proper ironing technique. I have never had any formal quilting training--mostly from family, so this was very helpful!
Thank you! I've heard the do's & don'ts before, but now that I understand the why's, I'm more likely to remember & actually do it well every time!
😎
I've only made 2 quilts in my entire life, and that was almost 20 years ago, (I'm 61) but I'm getting started again, and I'm so excited, and hope to make LOTS of beautiful things :-)
Thank you so much for your AWESOME videos! You inspire me!
Sorry for you troubles. Glad your making lemonade.
Mind blown. I've never seen anyone describe it that way! That woven paper was incredibly effective visual aid.
Oh you’re so funny! Looking sideways at the camera with your head on the pressing surface! Seriously though, this is all great information and I did like the chemistry lesson too! Many thanks.
Filming is exhausting and occasionally I am just too tired to set up another camera angle. Thanks for watching
Loved the video. I’m a new quilter and I love a good “tips” video. Pressing correctly and getting minimal distortion and excellent points is a great feeling!!!
😎
I just stumbled onto your channel and I really liked the tips on ironing fused with the great outdoors and a furbaby, too! I've been a beginner for more than a few years, but hoping to get more time and experience quilting. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning gaining more skills. Thank you for sharing!
Now I understand why a lot of my squares ended up wonky. Thank you for this, I’ll apply this technique from now on.
Thank you so much for your videos!! I'm a new quilter, these have really helped!!!
Thank you!
Thanks and welcome
Great tips, thanks! I haven’t been finger pressing but will start now!
OMG. This never gets old! Thank you, thank you for explaining exactly WHY it's so important to stop the squish!
Amazed how well behaved you dog is in the back of the car. Do hope it is a dog :-)
Holy guacamole! This is what my quilting was missing!
Amazing how one little change can have such an impact
Thank you for your fabulous videos! I have been heard for years not to move the iron while pressing and never understood why until now, thank you!
😎
I mean...who would have thought. 😎
I have sewn for years. I learned a lot, maybe my blocks will be flatter now. Great information. My daughter is just starting to quilt, I will pass this information to her. Thank you very much for so much good stuff.
I agree with Previous comments - she always catches you a year too late. Well, I love ❤️ you anyway. Thank 🙇. You - Love your dog too.
LOVE the way you explain things about quilting. I keep wondering if you were a science teacher in a previous life. I hope so, the way you explain/ teach about quilting helps me so much.
Well that explains why some of my squares never lay flat. You just proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Happy quilting.
