Hey there, this is Dan Owsley. I'm glad to see the trap worked for you. The reason I caught so many was that I didn't have any other traps like you do. I believe with all you are doing you will see a reduction in biting flies year after year. It's a part of the breeding cycle for the female fly to have a blood meal. With all that you're doing, you're definitely disrupting the breeding cycle. A suggestion: the reason I made the leg design the way I did was to slip the bag over the box. This allows half of the bag to hang down under the "bath" and simulate an animal belly. Those big flies are visual hunters.
Thank You so much for commenting and the suggestion on the bag. I plan on making more of them to place around the pasture. It has helped the animals so much. We have been searching for a method for years before I came across your design. I truly hope others will build one so they to will see how much it actually helps.

I used to work at a college that had a lot of windows. One hallway had windows on both sides. As I was sitting studying one day, I noticed a redheaded woodpecker flying to the base of the windows every now and then and then he would fly back to the tree. After he did this about 30 times, I went over to the window and watched. Here horseflies were hitting the windows, knocking themselves silly at which the woodpecker would come down and grab them before they flew away. I'll bet that woodpecker ate 50 flies in the 2 hours I sat there, lol. 😁

All good ideas. Congrats. Female horse flies (the ones that feed on blood) are attracted to the polarized light reflecting from surfaces at various angles set around a yard high, e.g. water or plexiglas can be used for this purpose. Males are attracted to low horizontal surfaces (they think it is a puddle of water, they only feed on nectar from flowers). So if you get the configuration/maerials and height just right and find a way to catch them, you are always amazed by how many are buzzing around as they are not as attracted to us as they are to animals, so a bit inconspicuous.

Female horse and deer flies MOSTLY terrorize our horses, but they also chase us around the farm with their MASSIVE harpoon-like mouth part! They’ll go after any large mammal in search of a blood meal. I’ve never seen them go after cats or dogs.
Glad the traps help relieve the animals tremendously. Tips for the fly trap maintenance: (1) Keep the attractant tray wet; (2) Fruits, leftover, candies, fish, bones, etc. are great attractants; (3) Dead flies in the trap are effective attractants, too; (4) Tie the fly trap to the tree branch to prevent it being destroyed by wind; (5) If you like, the fly trap can be cleaned easily by crushing the dry flies with our hands and shake them out like sand, and we can put it away to reuse it next year if its situation is good enough.

Nice Trap! I saw one a guy designed that had a fan hooked up to a solar panel and he cover the intake side of the fan with a mesh. It caught all kinds of insects, dried them out, and then he'd toss the bugs to his chickens for extra protein.

Yes they do. Egg and water is all we use for bait.
Me, too. They're totally environmentally friendly and extremely effective, which interest me the most.
I am sure your little dog appreciates it as well,I had some big horse flies that would pester me out in the yard and they were so fast,never trapped them but did end up killing a few with thin flat stick,but it was pure luck I was able to hit them they are so fast.
They are extremely fast and can throw your shoulder out trying to get them. We have made a game out of it to see who can get the most.
One thing that should help you attract more of those Jumanji-like horse and deer flies to your homemade trap is to add some dark colored sheets of plywood or tarp around your plexiglas trap.
The info on the Epps biting fly trap I just bought said the reason for including a black panel for 3 sides of the trap is to approximate the size and shape of a large animal- the primary target of the female blood-sucking horse and deer flies. The sales info says the panels help attract a lot more flies.
Yes the black panels are to help attract the horse flies. They are attracted to heat. I haven’t used the Epps fly trap but I’m sure it will help. Our horse flies are just now starting to show up in force. It has made a difference when using the trap. It does not 100% catch them all, but it puts a huge dent in them and helps with our horses.

@@hollyridgehomestead I sure will, good or bad, I’ll let you know how it actually works out. The kit just arrived this week but all I had on hand were 6 ft T-posts (or shorter) and the Epps uses (4) 7 footers. I sure hope it lives up to the claims and my expectations bc 2 of my 5 horses are dark (a Black and a Bay) and each are attacked and suffer more than the other 3 combined!

Here’s the update you requested… such as it is.
I had to wait on delivery of some 7 ft T-posts that were not included, but at that price point, certainly SHOULD have been! I also had to wait on replacement of some “U” bolts that ARE included, but they packed the wrong size with my initial order.
So, about a week ago, I finally managed to get my Epps Biting Horse Fly trap all set up. I haven’t seen any of those Jumanji-like Horse flies or Deer flies as of YET, but it’s still a little early in our season for them. I think this is the FIRST time I’ve ever been prepped and ready for something AHEAD of schedule! lol
Anyway, there are two, approx 4ft long trays for soapy water suspended between two of the four T-posts and black tarp-like heat absorbing panels. In just a few days, both trays have caught a bunch of wasps. The top tray caught some Japanese beetles, Figeater beetles and some others I’ve never really noticed before; and the bottom tray caught several biting Greenhead flies, which I was very glad to see. The REAL test though, will come in August/September, which is when we usually get hit pretty hard with the monster Horse flies. I’ll give you another assessment when that happens-after all, it’s the primary reason I bought the trap. Till then.

The goats got out yesterday and 1st thing they started rubbing their heads on it. I’ve got some ideas though.

I made one of those fighting flytraps kind of like yours before , based on the Epps fighting flytrap that costs a Fortune.
Mine was flimsier and kept falling over because I had nothing to attach it to .
But it did catch a bunch of them when it was standing up LOL

If you are talking about the green fly trap, we had ordered it from the fly trap store. But I will say they don’t last more that a year.
I actually have been using the fly trap by Rescue. We use the green top one. It is prebaited with some real stinky stuff. It works 100 times better than my little green trap I showed on the video.
The horse fly trap we built but I didn’t really do a detailed video. Make sure you watch the 1st video of me putting it together. I can’t remember how detailed it was but I think I mentioned the dimension.

Damn bro, im in Tucson ive never seen those fly's, poor horse's 🐴 thx for helping them!! Do you think if you'd have 8 or more of those traps around ur house they would be eradicated completely??
We plan own building more to put around the pasture but it will not get rid of them 100%. We will do everything possible to help them. Luckily the horse fly aren't here all the time and its seasonal.
My concern is that it will attract more from outside the property, so you end up with even more around the place. Will it do that?
If you have animals like we do, they are coming no matter what. I just try to help my animals as best I can.

i live in central germany and it's already way to hot during summer...i could never live in such a climate

@@jeanmattison3600 Ranch Fly Trap. But we are using the Rescue Fly trap with green top. All you do is add water. They are disposable and catches them like crazy too.

The trap works great. It will not 100% catch them all. It has to be close to your animals (with in 15 feet) or where humans hang out. Horse flies are attracted to heat, so keep that in mind when moving it around.
