    This is great. I wasn’t going to watch it because it’s 59 minutes, which is 58 minutes longer than my attention span, but I’m glad I did. So much great information and insight. Finally something that makes sense to me.

    (P.S I really wanted to thank you because now I've realized I love writing, but the first thing I ever actually tried hard writing was a fan fiction for the city between. So thank you, your the reason I'm a writer. ❤)

    Thank you so much for making sure those of us who couldn't attend live could watch a recording! This is so helpful while I don't struggle with Adhd I am dyslexic and have a chronic illness that makes writing consistently a challenge 🙃😅 I will definitely be trying out some of what you have suggested!❤
    Blessings and hugs!💕

      dyslexia and chronic illness singly are hard: together is compounding the difficulty 😫 i hope some of this works for you!
      (i find that the font/colour combo on my word doc make a lot of difference with my dyslexia, btw-so if you haven’t tried experimenting with that, i highly recommend doing so!)

    • @amandaelsts4863
      @amandaelsts4863 Год назад

      @that_sWRite I haven't tried using colour. Do you just make your whole doc a different color other than black or do you alternate colors somehow?
      I do use the open dyslexic font often and it really helps.
      I also use use the read aloud function in Word. Sometimes, I read while listening or just close my eye's it helps with some of my bigger grammatical errors.
      Hope you have/had a great service at church today!

      @that_sWRite  Год назад +1

      @@amandaelsts4863 rather than changing the colour of the doc, i’ll change the colour of the font-dark green or dark blue instead of black ☺️

    This was exactly what I needed to see today, thank you. As I approach 2 years sober, I'm finally coming to grips with having unsuccessfully self-medicated for 30 years of my life, and this ADHD connection to writing habits is feeling like you somehow traveled from Tasmania to Kansas and visited me directly in my own brain.

    Object impermanence is one of my biggest struggles as well. These tips are great. I’m taking a writing course with great exercises, but sometimes I can’t make my brain do the exercises on command. Now I’ll put it aside, do something else and find that I’ll get flashes of insight when I’m doing something like driving. Then as soon as I get home, I dive into my notebook. I’m also bribing myself to finish my novel by allowing myself to go to a writing conference in November. Great video!

      object impermanence--the bane of my life and the reason why i have my own personal fridge ahaha
      i'm so glad the video was helpful, and that you're finding ways to work around it!

  • @bforman1300
    @bforman1300 Год назад +4

    Bribes come before.
    REWARDS come after, but planning ahead for a reward is perfectly acceptable.
    Reward the behaviors you want to see repeated.

    • @that_sWRite
      @that_sWRite  Год назад +4

      a bribe: "if you do this, i give you that/i'll give you this to do that"
      a reward: "hey you did something good, here is a nice thing that wasn't promised"
      basically, rewards don't work: i need the bribe--the promise of the thing i've already got or am planning to buy, in exchange for the thing i need to be done. often i already have the thing and just don't let myself use it until after. whether it comes before or after isn't relevant; it's the purpose of the thing that matters.
      you can think of it as a reward if that works for you, tho, for sure! i'll still disagree with your interpretation of bribe/reward, but that's the fun of the system; you can do it the way that works for you!

    • @bforman1300
      @bforman1300 Год назад

      @that_sWRite call it what you will, you are rewarding yourself AFTERWARD. Keep it up!

    • @that_sWRite
      @that_sWRite  Год назад +3

      @@bforman1300 i mean you do you and make rewards for yourself, but please don’t try to explain my own system to me. there is definitely crossover between reward/bribe but imagine trying to get off a charge of bribery by saying to the judge “well actually yr honour i gave the money to the official AFTER he did what i wanted him to do so you can’t get me for bribery”?
      i bribe myself because that’s what works. my little weasel brain loves the “oho, doin’ a dodgy” that i can’t get from a reward. anyone who wants to “reward” themselves instead is perfectly legitimate, and I encourage that ☺️ arguing over the terms someone else uses legitimately isn’t very productive; it doesn’t make them wrong, and it doesn’t mean you have to use the same terms either

    Sorry for the random comment, but I just wanted to say I love your books so much it's not even funny!
    Your the best writer ever!! :D
    Also, I know this is random, but I just wanted to say this because I love this detail so much!!!
    My favorite little detail in The City Between is in book nine, when Pet and Zero are in the heirling trials, and Pet asks Zero what does he smell/what's the smell that's comforting him.
    When he said "Lavender" with such a pained look in his face it broke my heart! I guess even after everything Athelas has done, the thought of him still comforts Zero!
    Also, I almost cried out of happiness when I read the ending of The World behind!
    (Spoiler alert for anyone reading this)
    I squealed when Zero came to live with them, it made me so happy!!!

    I have a playlist i play for myself for about half an hour to get my head on track for the writing, and then while i write i have a background noise type track from YT playing at low volume that fits the theme of the writing, like "Radio chatter of patrolling spaceships" or similar.
