I’ve always known of Van as my mum listened to him in the car so I knew his hits but only recently getting into his catalogue and he’s done some of the most beautiful albums ever. ‘Astral weeks’ is just from another world and so happy I’ve found it, it maybe the sound I’ve been searching for. Sounds like heaven

Van knows what he wants. I was once sitting very close to the stage when someone in the band screwed up. He was pissed and as they say, he phoned it in. And after that the audience was penalized by a sub par performance. I’ll never forget the look on his face.
He mentioned Colin Tilton from Van Morrison’s band. Colin played for years in a local band here in Connecticut called Eight to the Bar. My old played many shows with them. Colin is a monster sax player.

For a long time I LOVED Van, had all his records, took tapes everywhere I went. Until I saw him live in the Bay Area. HE did a horrible show, sang with his back to the audience, never said thank you to the applause, left without an encore. I realized or, at least felt, he was not a good person deserving of my admiration.
Still, Into the Mystic is one of the best songs EVER written, total masterpiece, and I want it played at my funeral.

Despite what Messenger says here, its not Hugh McCracken who invented the very "Tokens' Lion Sleeps Tonight"-sounding intro to "Brown Eyed Girl", its Al Gorgoni. If you listen to takes 7 & 8 on the "Authorized Bang Collection", you can hear it almost in its final stage & Bert Berns says "Al: The beginning of that, the very beginning of that intro figure is very groovy" .
McCracken is addressed a few seconds later but I can't make out what Berns is saying to him.

Its something like "no cracks, McCracken".
It would have been nice if Van had reunited at least for some time with his original band (Them). They also had good organ and guitar playing (sometimes a bit like the Ventures) that worked well with Van's raw voice.
Too many players in and out, bad feeling on both sides. I suppose a definitive line could’ve been good. That tall blonde fella, shaking his head and hair, great performer, good guitarist 👌🏿

Often wondered why Van recorded in CA. He left his homeland due to management and money. He moved to East Bay eventually...from Boston to Hollywood and everything in-between.
