Well said Fr Barron! Jesus spoke to this truth that Heaven is not a separate place out there; but rather is all around us. Luke 17: 21 "The kingdom of God is within you". We will experience it in proportion to our love for God.
This homily points to a deeply biblical dimension of what discipleship is: my sight from your eyes, Lord ascended; my walk, from your legs and feet; my listening, from your ears; my speaking, from your mouth; my touch, from your hands; my love for others, from your heart. Then, the Father’s will will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Levis Shalom
Father I must tell you that your teaching is so appreciated. I have offered your videos to friends...horses to water, as the saying goes. I tell non-catholic friends to study the Eucharist and listen to Bishop Barron. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed with my car - imagine 70 mph on highways that take me anywhere, the magic of gasoline and utility of mechanical genius. Other times I just hop in and drive to the store. Bad metaphor I know, but my point is I would stagger under the pressure of the Eucharist if I constantly perceived it as it Is ! Your insight into The Jewish understanding of Heaven and Earth is a Eureka moment for me. I realize “how”Jesus ascended into Heaven. He is the bridge between Heaven and Earth . I don’t understand it. And my post sounds awkward and probably simple minded but I know that Jesus is Present in The Eucharist Body Blood Soul and Divinity. I know that the whole Earth was Ascended into Heaven when Jesus ascended.
O Jesus, Mary and Joseph teach us: Faith, Hope and Love. Ps 47:8, Jn 16:27 “From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s will in things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ, her Son and the Son of God.” Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom…Pray for Us. Pope St. John Paul II…Pray for Us.

@BeingItself Yes, your heart is an organ that pumps blood. I pray you don't stay so stuck at concrete level consciousness that you miss its other qualities. Even anatomically the heart sends messages to the brain. The Intellect can only function properly when it serves Love. God is Love. As St. Edith Stein observed: "The presence and the apparent absence of God are felt in the heart-either in bliss or in most painful desire." A hardened heart blocks the Intellect from understanding the Bible.
@BeingItself You quote, "what it means is the translation of this earthly reality into the heavenly dimension," and call it "meaningless twaddle" - to you. To those of us who have shifted our minds by holding love of God in first position, it is perfect clarity.
Great video, Father. I love my faith and try to research it as much as I can, but I have never heard the Ascenson presented in this way before. Quite the paradigm shift and something to meditate on for many prayer sessions to come! :)
Fr. Barron I have been watching your videos for quite a while now and I want to tell you how much of an impact you have had on my spiritual formation. Having just left college I find great solace in you videos and they awaken me to so many great aspects of the Faith in not just theological issues but contemporary ones as well. I want to evolve this thinking even more. What would you recommend I do? Thank you and may God bless you.
@dumpmist Thanks :) Correlation can't work for the Resurrection - one should not expect it to, if one regards it as supernatural. A supernatural event is by definition incomparable & without analogy; unlike historical events. Which is why in Catholic theology one speaks of a natural and supernatural order of being. IMNSHO half the trouble in discussions like this is that people don't explain the ideas behind the ideas they are standing up for.
Thanks Fr Barron for your interesting theory. An alternative theory is simply that the 1st and 2nd Century N.T. writers thought that heaven was just above the sky so it made sense to them to write Jesus as flying up into the sky like Elijah ( 2 Kings 2 ) and Moses. However now humans have shown conclusively that heaven is not just above the sky so the fiction of Acts 1v9 is exposed. See The pre Nicene New Testament by Robert M. Price, p 562
Lack of complete faith in the omnipotence of God, and lack of full trust in the integrity of the witnesses made many to reject the Truth. The root cause is that despite God evolved minds of us in tandem with globalization and Information explosion, men are reluctant to raise the limit on Omnipotence. In other words, despite God is the only reality and everything else are His live works (=creation), they are reluctant to accept that ALL we observe is what we are gifted to observe. So in nut shell, His disciple literally saw Jesus’ ascension. Some can’t even imagine that simply because they are not even given the faith that God is the only reality, the reason for this abandonment, is as we know, is our sin (that include not even sincerely trying to seek the truth of the notion God).
I confirm Father teachings, most surprising. Having Researched my personal experiences, Ascension is dynamic Like a space shuttle turned on. Father please excuse me for answering so late, welll im still a senior in high school but i am planning to go to a university. Fr. Barron, I've heard that Thomas Jefferson believed that St. Paul was a 'Platonist' who manipulated Jesus' message ( I don't know what the motive could possible be). He also said the Christian Priesthood has complicated Jesus' simple message in order to confuse the masses and introduce power, profit and preeminence into religion. Could you respond to both accusations? I know Jefferson was a great mind, but on Religion, it seems he spent much time bashing it before thoroughly studying it. Thx

@BeingItself Nothing pseudo about that profundity. Later these become "spurbar", perceptible. With this transformation, you are suddenly able to read the Bible with the Heart. And then your intellect will understand, then unless pride gets in the way, you admit it.
@dumpmist The Longing in the Heart is more Foundational than emotions. If one thinks of the Heart as where the Treasure lies and realizes that from that vantage point there are 3 streams of info flowing in: intellectual, emotional, and feeling, each as important as the other. The overemphasis of the intellect has resulted in modern scientists finding clever ways of denying to themselves and others their emotional and feeling concerns, eg where's the funding going to come from, or social approval.

@BeingItself Love cannot force itself upon anyone. We can agree on that, can we not? When humans insist on saying no to Love - and God is Love - then Reality is by choice without Love which looks like Hell, including "all the smiting and whatnot".
@wafflesmacduff I personally agree with Pope John XXII that the saints do not see God before the Bodily Resurrection in the Last Days, but sleep until they are given glorified bodies fit for the New Heaven and the New Earth.(I would also agree with his rejection of Papal Infallibility.) However, the next Pope Benedict XII's "Benedictus Deus" made it a dogma that the souls of the departed go to their eternal reward immediately after death, rather than waiting unconscious until the Last Judgement.
IMO, the best way to unify the Greek and Jewish ideas on Heaven is to make a distinction between a "Platonic" Eternity and a "temporal" Heaven (ie, the Heaven that will merge with Earth). There's a timeless, spaceless Eternity, where the Holy Trinity resides, unchanged. Then, there's a temporal Heaven, where finite creatures like us will experience the eternal. If we say that Jesus Christ "returned" to Eternity following the Ascension, then we're basically in some sort of Eutychian word salad--that is, we'd be saying that God the Son "left" Eternity, became intertwined with flesh and time, and then "returned" to Eternity in the form of Jesus Christ (in other words, we'd be speaking of a "temporal change" within Eternity, a contradiction). But if we say that Jesus Christ went to the temporal Heaven, then we still have God the Son eternally unchanged. Also, we avoid charges of Nestorianism by invoking the divine attribute of omnipresence, whereby there's no contradiction between the Person of God the Son being in Eternity, and the *same* Person Jesus Christ, our Risen Savior, being in temporal Heaven. And...all is well, as far as I can tell :-).
@dumpmist ...He can write himself into his story, while also living in the "primary" world, the "real world"'; unless he becomes a character in his story in the sub- created, "secondary world" he has made, his characters can't meet him: they could know of him only by his effects as the maker of the world they inhabit. Christians believe that, in Jesus of Nazareth, God has written Himself into His own story, to become a man,"one of us" as well as remaining God.
@BeingItself Yup. He went up. That's obviously the main point of the account. One had to crane one's neck to witness the event. That's what's important.
Its my understanding that Plato was talking about knowledge and the lack of common sense and The cave was he was of commenting on the death of Socrates his teacher, but I like your spin on it,
@Blaseboniface "feeling the Longing in their Hearts" Yes, this seemingly universal feeling of belonging to a higher purpose is peculiar and very interesting. The problem I have with it is that outside the realm of socializing and surviving, feelings usually fool us rather then help us. Most of science is unintuitive, because the intuitive things we'd already figured out without science. I feel there's a conflict between the scientific version of our origin and destiny, and the religious version.
Science just provide a mnemonic way to correlate and organize God’s work. That is, just another gift of God for mankind. Some futilely use it to disprove God.
Jesus Christ was talking with them about the heavens, their mission, how to serve,The Holy Spirit,The second coming and many things didn’t written in the Bible.
Any reference written in English in the New Testament bible in relation to ascending to heaven and coming down from heaven is actually in relation to gaining understanding of the Kingdom of heaven and breaking it down in understanding it. Nothing to do with physically ascending or descending from the skies.

@@JJ-nn8kr You are suggesting a mere 2000 years ago a physical body flew in the sky unaided. This would have been the thing to talk about for all generations for the entire world as proof of being son of Theos and the teachings of Jesus is true. There would have been immediate conversions to Christian teachings at the time. This did not happen as the followers were persecuted for 400 years or so and Christianity only went main stream because of politics. In context the Israelites were burdened in trying to live right by the teaching of the Pharisees and couldn't live up to it. They had low demeanor and self esteem because of the situation at the time. Jesus teaching if followed eased that burden. After the crucifixion Jesus was seen alive in the flesh and basically only The Most High could have caused him to be in the flesh so the people believed that as a sign, similar to Johna. The Greek of Acts 1:9 is more likely to be a motivational speech by Jesus in saying "Look, rise like a cloud, elevate yourself from the perspective of them, the Pharisees." Nobody was ever thinking of anybody flying unaided anywhere until recently
@@JJ-nn8kr Bleponton(Look), auton eperthe (rise yourselves) kai nephele (as a cloud), hypelaben autos(elevate yourselves) apo ton(from the) ophthalmon(perspective) auton(of them) Put yourself in the time of Jesus 2000 years ago. Bear in mind that Jesus is not known to have super powers but a normal man, and someone wrote what took place with him a few weeks before in Greek and you now need to translate it to an English speaker. Would you think that this man rose to the cloud to interpret the writing so. I am referring to acts 1:9 that this ascension is weighed heavily on. The only logical interpretation at the time or if it took place now would be " And these things said, look, rise yourselves as a cloud, elevate yourselves from their perspective". Its like a man today would say I am reaching for the stars, the sky is the limit in relation to elevating one's status and achieving something. Someone speaking French would not think that any such writing would be literally interpreted as going up to the stars unaided to reach the sky. Its a motivational speech.
@BeingItself You said, "They were just dead wrong, like so much else in the bible," so I tried to take you back to basics. Read the Bible with the Heart. God is Love. Love is primary, then the intellect functions. Of course, if you refuse, to as Jesus suggested "metanoia te" - "move your mind" - then what I wrote appears to you to be "a mess of word salad."
John 3:3-8 talks about being reborn of spirit and contrasts that with the idea of physical rebirth through the mother's womb. We have to differentiate between matters of flesh and spirit, Jesus says. But we don't have to die physically to be reborn. Rebirth of spirit occurs for the living flesh, and so descends Holy Spirit and brings God's will to reign on Earth (within us) as it does in heaven.
@dumpmist God, the Creator of all things visible and invisible, breaks into Creation everywhere, and so human beings throughout History, feeling the Longing in their Hearts have sometimes given priority to Love and other holy books have shards of the Sacred Map. The Difference with the Bible is that God Himself became Human to show us the Way, the Truth, and the Life. An encounter in the Heart with the Bible as a Map is present tense Proof of the Resurrection which then transforms the Mind.
@5355vbxjbj76rvn I would say that this type of analogy has been the most helpful to me, with my impoverished imagination. I think the writings of C.S. Lewis were most helppful in this area. God bless you.
Essence or God is eternal...when the physical form becomes divinized...it becomes eternal. For this reason, Jesus as a person is eternally present. Anyone who becomes fully one with God...becomes eternal.
Father, are the souls of saints in heaven or are they embodied as well as Christ was, even if they didn't ascend physically? Of course, their bodies still remain below, but do they have a perfected body of sorts in heaven?
@Blaseboniface "[...] modern scientists finding clever ways of denying to themselves [...]" My point of view is that science is finding more and more evidence that contradict ideas like "the longing in the heart", and can replace them with scientific explanations that are more predictive (as in being able to control the future, for better and worse). I do share your concern about social approval though, and I think that is what will eventually put a limit on how strange things we can discover.
@fieldstonewall Can you explain this Holy Ghost epistemology in detail? How do you know when it is the real holy spirit and not a demon communicating? What about when 2 people both claim to have a revelation from the Holy Spirit, yet theses revelations contradict? By what method do you decide who is right? Thanks. Good luck with that.
Effectively, once Church approves one can trust it was from Holy Spirit! There is no other way, strictly speaking. One can trust most of the times from the fruits of the tree what/who is the tree, though.
Ascension and setting to the Wright of His Heavenly Father means: (1)the richness of salvation done by Jesus Christ is already to the Wright of Our Heavenly Father called the (Potentiality). (2)God the Father can send from this treasure through the Holly Spirit fruits and gifts 🎁 through the Sacrments of the church (expectation). (3) this if the people through their will ask for these 🎁 canonically inside the church they will get it from God by grace (the reality). (4)this needs living spiritual life continuously and be honest in following the steps of our Lord Jesus Christ all our life.
When you go to Israel & see where Jesus ascended into Heaven you " GET IT". If you can film this & show a video of this scene others may understand as well.
Interesting and love the explanation, however why does the Bible use the word “to ascend”? That means to go up. Also, where did he go? Did he just disappear? It feels fairly open ended...
Lack of complete faith in the omnipotence of God, and lack of full trust in the integrity of the witnesses made many to reject the Truth. The root cause is that despite God evolved minds of us in tandem with globalization and Information explosion, men are reluctant to raise the limit on Omnipotence. Some can’t even imagine that simply because they are not even given the faith that God is the only reality, the reason for this abandonment, is as we know, is our sin (that include not even sincerely trying to seek the truth of the notion God).
@equitemcroce Well I can go down that road too if you want. Suppose I grant that Jesus ascended and disappeared form this universe and now resides in some other dimension that Barron wants to call 'Heaven'. OK. Now Barron want to layer on a whole bunch of interpretive theology explaining the deeper symbolic meaning of this event. How does he arrive at that interpretation? What was his method? Specifically. Suppose someone else has another interpretation using another method. Who's right?

@Bishop Barron - Sorry, but if you insist on a bodily resurrection, then where did Jesus body go if it wasn't a literal ascension? You have me very confused.
@Blaseboniface Wow, what a mess of word salad. We are talking about the physical ascension of Jesus to heaven, right? In what way do your incoherent comments relate to that topic?
@MQ1611 "500 witnesses attest that a crucified man came back from the dead" Yesterday I and ten more people witnessed a man pulling coins out of his ear. That is impossible, and you know what, so is coming back from the dead as well.

@dumpmist Statistical correlation can't be applied to the supernatural order. There is no "third term" between the natural & super-natural orders. The super-natural order is inaccessible to the natural order. An analogy might be the relation of a novelist's sub-created world, to the world of the novelist's own life. He may live 12 years writing his story - 6,000 years may pass in the story. Unless he enters his story, his characters can't "meet" him....

Surely a likely suggestion that they too with faith could fly and sour in such a celebration!!!!!
-I get it! The Ascension is also the meeting of Heaven and Earth, because whilst Jesus Ascends, The Holy Spirit Descends, it's the Jewish Way!

THANK YOU. VERY VERY HELPFUL. :)
@fieldstonewall
Can you make a case for why I should think that is a reliable method of getting at the truth?
Jesus is the physical representation of God the spirit.
@dumpmist
...He can write himself into his story, while also living in the "primary" world, the "real world"'; unless he becomes a character in his story in the sub- created, "secondary world" he has made, his characters can't meet him: they could know of him only by his effects as the maker of the world they inhabit.

@Blaseboniface "feeling the Longing in their Hearts"
Yes, this seemingly universal feeling of belonging to a higher purpose is peculiar and very interesting.
Some futilely use it to disprove God.
wow! very interesting
What I need to know, why it takes 40 days from Resurrection to Ascension?
Jesus Christ was talking with them about the heavens, their mission, how to serve,The Holy Spirit,The second coming and many things didn’t written in the Bible.
I wish all my school teachers were catholic :(
Any reference written in English in the New Testament bible in relation to ascending to heaven and coming down from heaven is actually in relation to gaining understanding of the Kingdom of heaven and breaking it down in understanding it. Nothing to do with physically ascending or descending from the skies.
@@JJ-nn8kr Bleponton(Look), auton eperthe (rise yourselves) kai nephele (as a cloud), hypelaben autos(elevate yourselves) apo ton(from the) ophthalmon(perspective) auton(of them)
Put yourself in the time of Jesus 2000 years ago. The only logical interpretation at the time or if it took place now would be
" And these things said, look, rise yourselves as a cloud, elevate yourselves from their perspective".
Nietzsche's Affirmation of Life!
@itslifeisall Oh, do enlighten us!
your comment on this one is one hell of a comment! *thumb up*
@Blaseboniface "[...] modern scientists finding clever ways of denying to themselves [...]"
My point of view is that science is finding more and more evidence that contradict ideas like "the longing in the heart", and can replace them with scientific explanations that are more predictive (as in being able to control the future, for better and worse). I do share your concern about social approval though, and I think that is what will eventually put a limit on how strange things we can discover.
@fieldstonewall
Can you explain this Holy Ghost epistemology in detail? How do you know when it is the real holy spirit and not a demon communicating? What about when 2 people both claim to have a revelation from the Holy Spirit, yet theses revelations contradict? By what method do you decide who is right?
Thanks. Good luck with that.
Effectively, once Church approves one can trust it was from Holy Spirit! There is no other way, strictly speaking. One can trust most of the times from the fruits of the tree what/who is the tree, though.
Ascension and setting to the Wright of His Heavenly Father means:
(1)the richness of salvation done by Jesus Christ is already to the Wright of Our Heavenly Father called the (Potentiality).
I am confused? What happens when we die? Bishop Barron, are you saying that heaven is here on earth? God Bless.
No! It begins on earth, but it comes to its fulfillment in a dimension beyond this one.
Thank you Bishop Barron for answering my confusion, God Bless you!
Bishop Robert Barron and where did you get this #knowledge?
I suspect you are merely #pretending to know things that you do not know.

Well I can go down that road too if you want.

So what happens when we die? And do we get a real physical glorified resurrected body?
Yes
When?

Suppose he answers your question. By what reliable method would he use to arrive at the answer?
Why does the bodily assumption of Mary matter?
Yet another evidence of bodily existence in heaven/ new world.

Statistical correlation can't be applied to the supernatural order.
