    Nearing the end. One thing that pops in my mind regarding leaving the old PC on instead of turning it off... it depends on how old it is and what OS it runs on. Windows10 has funny settings that just turning off the PC won't stop the background apps running. It is more like a sleep mode. Restarting the PC really helped to speed up things that were sluggish for clogging up memory with unused stuff. I noticed this when my PC played up before the reinstallation. I had a habit of hibernating it, which was probably similar to switching it off o Win10. I couldn't do simple things, browser loaded a page for ages, often suddenly, after it ran smoothly when I logged in, initially. Then it didn't. Restarting made it work faster like by a miracle, just restarting it sometimes took ages itself. Until it had the hiccups again, and I noticed it happened often after it was hibernating for over 24 hours. If I sat to it and did something within every 24 hours it lasted longer before I had to restart it to be able to work on it. This could be due to two unrelated issues though, but it is a known fact now that just switching Win10 off won't stop the stuff and turning it on again won't start fresh. Restart does that.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      Negative. You should never defragment an SSD drive. Windows automatically uses TRIM to optimize the drive. Just make sure to leave at least 20% free space for best results

    My final note, regarding that compressed air... I don't know, I have some aversion against it. While it may clean up a large portion of the internal parts by blowing the dust out, the chance is some might get stuck somewhere where we don't want it to and cause troubles. This was advised against regarding my Scan'n'cut machine when somebody suggested using this compressed air tool. It could be a hard detective work to look for a lump of dust stuck somewhere. Sucking it out with a bit more powerful tool could probably do a better job, agitating the parts with a fine brush to release it, if there is something of this kind of a vacuumer. The same for my keyboard (it shouldn't pull individual keys out of their slot, and if it did, we know where to look for them and push them back in LOL).

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  2 месяца назад

      I've always had good luck with compressed air. Now I use a rechargeable air duster. But I can see the benefit of sucking junk out vs dusting it out as well 👍

    Great video with lots of super useful info! I have a question though since I just got a new computer with SSD. Since you are not supposed to defragment, does that also mean that you should not shred files because of the multiple passes that it takes? Thanks for this video and I am definitely going to check out some of your others.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  2 месяца назад

      That is an excellent question, and I honestly don't know. On paper, that's exactly what it sounds like, so I'd say don't do it until it's proven that it doesn't cause any extra writes on the drive, which I doubt

    Good video. A ? I have is: Is Tweak SSD free a good optimiser programme for SSD drives please. I can't seem to find a lot of info re this programme and as I have SSD drives, I'm wondering whether tweak SSD would be a good option to defrag or optimise my computer please.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад

      I would not use ANY defrag or tweak tool on an SSD unless it's part of the installation (ie: Samsung Magician). Windows will optimize the drive automatically, there really isn't anything you need to do. Best to keep your PC clean by removing startup apps, unnecessary programs, even running programs like TronScript that will do a full debloat and system clean. Here's how if you want to check it out:

    Question about Defraggler. If I have and SSD instead of an HDD, there are no moving parts. It all happens with addresses. Is it worth cutting down the life of my SSD to defragment the SSD when the address switching happens almost instantly? As I understand it writing to my SSD reduces its lifespan a lot faster than reading it does. Which is better in the long run?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

    Right. Chrome, Brave and Edge run on Chromium, as I am aware (hopefully correct). What exactly makes them different in terms of security? That besides Brave seems to have more security features and blocking ads by default, and just now I completed the installation and learned how to use the Microsoft Defender Application guard for Edge (probably available on Pro and higher versions). That should also add some extra security IMO. Is it really just in how often they update the browser? And what if I use Google as a search engine in Brave (which I don't at the moment, but I have noticed they offer a bit different search results, or at least display it differently).

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

    Before the 14th minute, when you say it isn't the Windows' problem I will probably disagree. I have had an issue, my pc was slowing down at times, rebooting sometimes was taking ages, and I wanted to check whether my paid Norton 360 wasn't the issue. The advise was to pause it and see. But I couldn't pause it. That option was greyed out. Norton advised on their pages to reinstall it and try again. I did reinstall Norton every year to get a discounted licence, that including all the files it had left in the background were removed. Without doing it it didn't allow me to renew the licence at a discounted price. What I did was I uninstalled it and a bag of fleas opened. Before uninstalling it I ran it to do a full scan, which took over 5 hours, so it was unlikely being a malware that caused issues (unless Norton was that malware, which some IT people on the web are saying). What I found out was that I couldn't update Windows defender, I couldn't run a antivirus scan, I couldn't do the files backup via Windows, some processes kept stopping and me unable to keep them going, despite being able to start them and set up to start automatically... they kept turning themselves off almost immediately. I spent a few weeks going back and forth with various checks, running commands in cmd or powershell, even extended the recovery partition successfully to install the Windows updates (which is telling me it wasn't initially the problem of my problem as many others had this issue)... something was terribly messed up with my Windows and I wasn't able to figure it out and fix, even DISM kept failing and scannow found no integrity violations. I ended up backing up all my files on an external driveS (two of them) manually and reinstalling the whole stuff from the very scratch, via the manufacturer's recovery tool, as it has a higher privileges for my security above my admin privileges (HP Surestart). I blame Norton from messing up my system and you can guess I never went back to it, despite the licence was renewed just about a month before this happened. I have been having issues with this pc that kept building up for years (as I have been using Norton for years), and uninstalling it didn't fix it, only uncovered deeper issues it was probably masking.

I have 936 GB of storage and recently discovered I was maxed out. So I removed a bunch of files, mostly pictures, videos and some documents and empty the recycling bin. Moved a bunch of videos to an external hard drive and got the storage down to about 80% just so I could use it. A day later it was maxed out again. I again removed probably 12 GB, a few hours later it was maxed out again. It keeps maxing out without me doing anything. Any suggestions on what to do?
    Edit: I also empty cash, temporary files and removed duplicate files. I also ran Norton and Avast and no viruses or malware was found.
    I have 289 GB of documents, music, videos, photos and apps. And 42.6 GB for System & reserved. And 606 GB for ‘other’. I clicked on that category, and it shows about 10 folders totaling less than 2 GB. I have no idea where or what the other 604 GB are.

      I've seen that with Norton antivirus and others. Also with various backup programs that keep copies ON the drive being backed up. I'd download WinDirStat for free and that will give you a better idea of what's eating your drive space. It probably has nothing to do with your personal files 👍

      Well, you hit the nail on the head. I ran WinDirStat and N360 Backup is hogging up 605 BG and I never back up my laptop. Not sure how that happens. What to do now?@@AskYourComputerGuy

    Can I add 8gb. RAM with 4,gbs to give me 12gbs ram....have 2 slots of 4 gbs now both different manufacturers. Want to match manufacturers, but one 8 gbs will do. This OK?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  4 месяца назад

      Three things: one, check the max RAM capacity on your motherboard from their website. If your board only supports 8GB, anything over that won't be seen. Two, your RAM will run at the slowest speed of whatever sticks you have installed, so for example, if you have a 6400 installed and then add 5200, all of your memory will run at 5200. Third, make sure you don't have to install memory in pairs. You can find this out by doing a scan on Crucial.com memory configurator online. Other than that, go for it!

    my C: drive went from 18% frag to 17%... and my F: drive from 50% to 50% :D is this normal?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Год назад

      The C drive not so much, that's not crazy. The D drive, just depends on what is stored on it, how much spare room you have, types of files, sizes, lots of factors. I'd run it again and don't do a quick defrag, make sure you do a full defrag. Takes longer but you'll see better results most likely

    • @maltnz
      @maltnz Год назад

      Modern platter hard drives have a modicum of "intelligence" built in and try to optimize file storage when writing. So defrag may not achieve much.

      Unless you're already at 40% or higher...then you will absolutely see a speed difference. My observed record so far is 89%. I didn't even think it ass possible for a Windows PC to get that fragmented 🤷‍♂️

    Is there a way to delete edge off my windows 11 computer please? Can't stand it to put things mildly and the bugger is that half the microsoft programmes I don't use including XBox, One Note and the like and the majority cannot be deleted in the all apps section. Microsoft are right royal pains now because they don't allow one to delete this silly programmes.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад

      1000% agree. Most of that crap is never going to be used by anyone, but yet you can't remove it. Thankfully it doesn't take up much space, but if you're OCD like me it's annoying. Suggestion: leave Edge. Even if you don't use it. Delete it from the desktop, even your start menu and taskbar if you want. But if ONE DAY your regular browser gets infected, you'll be thankful for that Edge being there to get you online to solve your problem. Let it sit in silence for that (hopefully never) one day you'll need access to the web. Trust me on this one ;)

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +1

      and I'm sure one could, if desired, remove it, but it would involve hacking the registry and a lot of complicted stuff. Then it will come right back after the next big Windows update. Best to just hide it and forget it exists ;)

      @@AskYourComputerGuy One can't uninstall Edge on Windows 11 at any rate. So yes I have just hidden it so it only shows in All Apps. To be honest I've never had an issue with Chrome - touching wood. I guess because I have so many programmes to deal such issues. Nortons Anti Virus which I'm getting used to - they took over Bullguard which I loved. Malwarebytes Pro version for laptop and free version for mobile & tablet; and Super Anti Spyware. I run all 3 programmes regularly.

      I don't trust Chrome. Not after all the zero-day exploits that seemed to literally happen weekly. They've done better with auto update but I'm leery. Overly cautious I suppose.

      You can still purchase a Windows 10 PC all day, as long as it is still being supported by Microsoft. I would highly recommend a W10 device over W11. You can always upgrade but you can't always go backwards 👍

    Lets not lie or sugar coat anything, maybe you should tell them why u really make a locale account. Its also cuz microsoft owns your computer w admin privileges until you break that connection w them. While they have them escalated privileges that entire time they could scan and look through all your documents and files on the client-side anytime they want to and take the file they want or need without your permission and on top of that could literally delete whatever whatever they don't find necessaey to benefit microsoft. If you have any files on your computer that resemble to changing your operating system to a different operating system like a Linux or apple it will block anything it's related to that software. E.i. I used to have itools on my computer I used to use it frequently for my Apple iPhone. Well I guess went down and I got it ran again had to reinstall these programs but cant download itools. it would not let me download iTools for anything...
