I always thought Stephanie Meyer kind of blew it in the last book. Of course the Volturi would want a vampire that can read minds and a vampire that can predict the future, but they didn't want a vampire who could control others' emotions? Dude could take a room full of hostile vampires and suddenly make them as mellow as if they'd just passed around a blunt.
I think aro was more or less obsessed with the idea of having that present and future on his team, since he would be the past due to his abilities. Past, present, and future.

I recall a class I took in college back in the Mid-1980's about "nurture vs nature". The question was..."Are children a product of what is in their DNA or a product of their environment"?????. At the time; professors and scientists were trying to figure that one out (due to the study of serial killers...like Ted Bundy or Son of Sam). I took the class for my Educational degree....(we had to take one such class "on social sciences"...and it was the only one that sounded interesting to me) One thing discussed that seemed interesting...."Are Serial killers produced because of their DNA or by their environment?" Interesting class. At the time; the verdict still wasn't a proven one....There wasn't enough criteria to look at, not during that time frame to really make a judgment call-1984) So where does this leave Jasper?. If he had been born in a different place/time or era...what would his belief system have been? Are we a product of our genes & DNA???? or our environment????...just saying....
Despite the fact that eclipse is the only one Jasper has any real screen time in the whole franchise, I appreciate it, the way they worked it into the plot, bringing up his past, despite the whole accent thing and the fact that in general he was a confederate soldier, it was cool hearing more from jaspers past and getting a bit more of his character, he was being genuinely helpful, I love any of his sweet bits with Alice, he loves him some Alice, but who doesn’t, and I liked how he explained his background to Bella, he was speaking to her so comfortably and again just being genuinely helpful, I always like to think jasper has no problem with Bella, his brother is happy, Alice loves her, he’s ok with her being one of them cuz that’s his brothers mate and he doesn’t want to always eat her, I think they utilized jaspers character in a fun way in eclipse

Alice and Jasper r one of my favorite couples. In fact I love how all of the couples r polar opposites 😂 Alice is weird but extroverted and pushy, while he’s quiet and silent but can be manipulative (yet chooses not to be). Rosalie was bitter, angry, and highly protective, while Emmett was a goofball, gym boy who liked everyone. Edwards a quiet, pretty boy who’s always depressed but highly interested in everything. And Bella’s…a floor mat that appreciates him and isn’t dedicated to her family unlike him.
Jasper 100% got bullied for his southern accent to he tries to hide it, but you can hear it slip every now and then. Or at least that's my explanation.
