It depends it's cassete or free wheel. If you have 6 and 7 speed, it comes with free wheel and if you want to change it to casette, you have to change the axel. And casettes usually comes with 8 speed or more.

Roads here in Varanasi are not very bad. It's patchy occassionally and its not very often that I have to go through elevation. Only the traffic is quite congested and control is quite important. So may be I would not need mountain bike. I haven't ridden a geared bike before and this would be my first instance, though in youtube videos I found Firefox road runner quite an enticing option but haven't tried on my own. My priority is to have comfortable riding experience without much hassles. I like speed but I'm not competing anywhere and at a stretch I need to be able to ride 20 kms. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
