  • The Battle of Gallipoli was a significant campaign during World War I, taking place from April 25, 1915, to January 9, 1916, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The objective of this campaign was to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula, thereby opening a passage to the Mediterranean Sea and directly threatening the Ottoman Empire's capital, Istanbul, in order to weaken the strategic position of the Central Powers.
    1. Motivation: The Allies aimed to attack the heart of the Ottoman Empire, blockade the Mediterranean, and establish a land route to Russia to increase pressure on Germany. Additionally, the Allies sought to challenge the Ottoman Empire's control over the Middle East.
    2. Landing: The Allied forces, primarily composed of troops from the UK, France, Australia, and New Zealand, totaling around 460,000, launched a landing operation on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915. However, they encountered fierce resistance from the Ottoman forces. The landing suffered significant setbacks, and the Allies sustained heavy casualties.
    3. Combat: As the campaign progressed, both sides engaged in numerous fierce battles, including brutal close-quarters combat. The rugged and complex terrain of Gallipoli posed significant challenges to the Allies' advances, while the Ottoman forces effectively utilized the advantageous terrain for defense.
    4. Retreat: By the summer of 1915, the Allies faced supply difficulties, rampant disease, and severe soldier fatigue. Under military and political pressure, the Allies ultimately evacuated the Gallipoli Peninsula in January 1916, marking the end of the campaign with the Allies' failure.
    5. Impact: The Battle of Gallipoli was one of the major failures for the Allies during World War I, resulting in significant casualties and losses. It also altered perceptions of Turkish military capability, laying the groundwork for the Republic of Turkey. Additionally, the Gallipoli campaign had profound effects on the military strategies and political decisions of the participating nations, significantly influencing the course of World War I.
