Words are indeed inadequate in describing the beauty of the sound of a vintage St. Paul's Cathedral Choir under the direction of the much-missed John Scott. If ever words were set to such perfectly suited music - surely one of the most satisfying and moving Anglican Chants ever composed - then, this is it. The sound of the boys' voices is almost heartbreaking. The poise, aptness, phrasing, and sheer musicality - which was typical of Scott's direction - reaches its climax in the way he places a slight fermata on the word '...end' and then on 'Amen'. It's perfection sung by perfection and directed by perfection. How life and the world has changed since the time of this recording is unfathomable. We need to hear the peace and beauty of this special recording repeatedly in our now quite mad world.
It's given me a jolt and a timely reminder to blow the dust off of my copy of the Hyperion Boxed CD set of St. Paul's Cathedral Choir singing the entire Book of Psalms directed by John Scott and played them again.
Many heartfelt thanks for posting this wonderful example of why we must never lose our tradition of choirs of boys and men singing such glorious music.
