Hey! I was an Au pair in Germany and did find my family on aupairworld.com. Sadly I had some negative experiences but the overall experience is great. Some tips I wanna give is. BE assertive without being rude. Because yes you are going in their home to essentially do a job. but don’t let someone take advantage of that. If you feel something is off TALK TO THEM. SPEAK UP. Because nothing gets solved with a quiet mouth and sadly at the time I did not have that. That is a big one. Because for my first, 3 months I had not one day off even when they were home doing nothing I had to care for the kids and house completely while they went out and partied and sat in bed all day. and they were not supposed to do that. Aupairworld list the legal aspects of this job in every country so you know what you are supposed to do and what the family is supposed to do regarding pay and hours. Research. Ask questions. Speak up. That’s all I have to say.
I am Currently an Au Pair in Switzerland, been here for over a year. Found my family on aupairworld.com, I really recommend the site because they have ranked the legal requirements for every country which helps a lot. Make sure you're not underpaid(check the lowest they're allowed to pay you) also look on how many hours you are allowed to work each week according to the state. For example; in switzerland you're not allowed to work more then 30h per week and you have to have at least one full day off. The lowest payment per month is 700chf. Working more then 30h makes you legally a nanny and your payment should be at least 2k chf each month. Make sure you have a good feeling with the family and no questions asked are stupid when finding a family.
thanks a lot!!! this will help me to look for a host family or a family for a job that will also allow to immerse myself with the culture they have and travel as well... pls if u have a referral or knw a famly whos looking for an aupair/nanny i am so much willing.. i want to see europe.😊 thanks guys..from the philippines ❤
Just adding on more info and my experience~ I decided to be an Au Pair in order to travel Europe as cheaply as possible! If you don’t gain weight while living in Spain or Italy you aren’t doing it right! I actually just got back from visiting my Italian family 3 years later and stayed with them for two weeks. I am an Au pair right now. Have been for nearly 20months. love it. I have learned that I do need to speak up for myself. I have had 4 families and some were better than the others. But just a tip for anyone that want to be an Au pair, speak up! Remember, you are not a maid... Thanks for the cool vids!!!
Yes yes yes! Speak up. I did not to do this for my first au pair job and to say the least I left more relieved to go home then to have stayed. If I would’ve sat them down and had the conversation of “ I’m not a maid or a slave and I need days off and to be treated respectfully” then maybe things would’ve changed and I would’ve had MORE fun. Not to take away from the experience but that kinda put this overcast over my trip
I’m on tinder a lot and for the past couple months I kept seeing girls had “au pair” as there occupation and I was like what the hell is that?! Finally after like the 50th girl who had “au pair” as there occupation I searched it on RUclips and found your video 😅
You are an absolute inspiration and I only found your channel about 3 days ago but, I can't wait to see more content. I love your videos and your Instagram is also very inspiring and, Happy early Birthday!!
This is really helpful, I'm an aupair in the spain as well currently, I've been here since 1st January 2019. Would like to share more about aupairing :). Thanks for this video
Happy Birthday! Thank you for being true to yourself and sharing your values, beliefs and inspiring life with the world. I hope to do the same one day through RUclips. I did get my first international/solo/volunteer teaching trip this year, so just beginning my journey. 😊🌈✨
My old au pair literally abused me. She was super nice but she didn’t feed me and my sister for 5 hours and we were about to pass out. She also never helped my mom with chores and was on her phone. She also slept in and she had such an easy job! (20 hours a week, compared to 45 as the max) but she was sweet mostly. I am getting a new polish au pair soon and I am so excited! She has so much in common with me :-)
1- Even humanitarian work doesn't get you as close to the culture as this type of experience does. I keep thinking of the word "embedded", but doesn't sound quite right. 2- Happy Birthday! Enjoy your day 🎂!!.. And. 3- Seth is correct, there is a 5 second rule, especially for donut filling rescue. It's in the Geneva Convention! Keep it on a one way!! 😊
Love the video!! You truly inspire me!!! Have a fabulous birthday!!!! I live in Missouri and you should totally come here!! So many great hikes and places to visit! Great people and super cute little towns!!
Thank you for sharing and also the comments from others are really helping me. I just signed up to be an au pair on the au pair site. I started viewing some of the profile and got scared. I quickly came off. Some of them seems like they are looking for a maid not an au pair. Clean, cook, help with home work, pick up from school, drop off to school and the list goes on. It does not seem like you would have any time for your self, to even study the language or even the the location you are at.
Another way is work exchange like worldpackers.com you go work places and accommodation and food is free! It’s how I started traveling! It’s $50/ to sign up and start contacting hosts. I’m going to announce the partnership in about a month but since you asked 🤷♀️ if you want to sign up they gave me a discount to give out: SHAYLA let’s you sign up for $30/year (actually $29 I’m rounding up 🙈😂🙌)
It really is! Ive been an au pair for only 1 month and a week so far, and I've already seen and learnt so much! I am so happy I took this opportunity! If you want to become independent and travel..then this is your key! You can find me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR" , ask as many questions as you'd like!
I'm from Spain and I was an Au pair in Germany :) It was sooooooooo so so great, but I truly think you should have at least a basic knowledge of the language. Before I went to that family, they had another girl that spoke no German at all and they had to ask her to leave because the kids really didn't stand not being able to comunicate with her (she could not understand why they were crying, what did they want to play, etc. Little stuff, but important for the kids). I mean, your kids went to a British school and probably at home the parents were constantly introducing them to films, TV, etc. in English. But mine were normal German kiddos that had never heard a word in English, so... they really needed someone that would be able to communicate with them in German.
Kids not liking peanut butter?! That was at least 25% of my diet growing up! From PB&J, to carrots and PB, to Ritz and PB. I don't know what life would be like without peanut butter.
First off... Feliz Cumpleaños!! My one question is, do you still try to keep Spanish fresh in your mind by speaking it every now and then? This Puerto Rican is curious 😉 Btw, great video.
Gracias!! I try and speak Spanish if I know someone else speaks it! I don't do it as much as I'd like to! So when I'm in a Spanish speaking country it takes a bit before it comes back fluidly! But right before I left Puerto Rico when I lived there, I was living with my boyfriends family in Bayamon and was REALLY getting a lot there and I loved it!
I’m Mexican so yes you are right the accent is different.. is like English in England and English in America is very different.. you got soo lucky I heard that Au pairs have to clean cook and take care of the kids.. The host parents probably had allot of money to have someone pick them up from school.
Oh I didn't know you could travel there with others, can you? Well I hate being alone so I really love this video. I've learnt so much(I also subscribed as soon as I saw you) 😅😁
I'm also a male from Switzerland and I really want to do an Au-pair year :)))))) Thx for your video. I'm thinking about where to go. New Zealand oder America?! It's a hard choice. But I know I will chose the right one.
Thats amazing! Honestly just follow your gut feeling, it will never lead you the wrong way! Im au pairing in Chicago in the states and I absolutely love it! Thats also because its been my dream to travel to the states and explore! You can fine me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR", ask as many questions as you'd like and let me know how your experience is going!
OK, great video. My question is can males be a nanny? What if you are already 68? Can a person that old be a nanny? OBVIOUSLY you would not be able to run that good, but if you had the will you could be a good teacher. Do people care how old you are?
Forgot to add a useful question. Do you have any tips you've learned in regards to specific questions that help during the first few interactions with a prospective host family, that others could use? Answers or behaviors that are red or warning signs, etc. BTW, if you google "au pair" your video shows up right there with the first video answers!.. It's not even about me, but I felt so proud!! :)
Okay so stupid question but I'm a vegetarian and since you live with your host family and have meals with them, how does that work out if their food choices dont coincide with yours?
Love your channel I look forward to wednesday when you post :) My question is how fluent do I need to be to be an Au Pair? I really want to go to Italy when I graduate but I don’t speak Italian at all.
You don't need to be fluent at all! Sometimes they prefer you aren't so that you only speak your native language to their kids!! I'm so happy you love the videos, that is so great to hear! Keeps me going! Each family is different, if it's a religious family they may prefer you were, but I'd say it's not going to be a big things everywhere!
Do you think you could do an erasmus and be an au pair? (Erasmus is like an scholarship in Europe flor going to university abroad) Like do you think you could go to university? Hi from Madrid!
Does the host take the employees for free of cost..Actually I afraid if I pay for the registration then it wouldn't be refund if I didn't get visa and flight tickets..please help me..
Hi I have a question that I can't seem to get an answer for. So I'm 31 years old living in the USA as a nanny. I have a extensive amount of experience caring for children: babysitting, preschool teacher and for the past 7 years i have been a nanny. I love to travel so naturally becoming an au pair sounds like a dream however, I am hearing some things about how you can only get a work visa if you are 30. Is there a way around this work visa or simply another option for older people?
I want to ask you, is there a deposit for money at home or in the family that will cover all your expenses while paying money? Because they asked me to deposit 1,000 pounds
Have money saved up, you always want your flight home paid for or enough to be able to buy one whenever. It was only an extra $100/ week and everything I NEEDED was taken care of but it was nice to have the extra money!
Hi, not sure if you will see this but was wonder I’m going to be an au pair in Italy for the first time and was wondering is 200 a month to cheap in your opinion?
It depends on what else is offered, what you’re looking for in the experience and what your jobs are :) some countries have minimums so google that too. AUPAIRWORLD.com has a ton of great information!
Do you know if it is best to have some sort of degree or be a certain age? I graduated high school last year and have wanted to travel my whole life but have never had the means to do so. Would you recommend being older than 19?
I'm 18 years old and want to be an AUpair, but I want to go to college as well. Should I go to college or try being an AUpair first? Also how can I convince my parents to let me be an AUpair?
Hi there! I am an au pair in Chicago. I personally don't think there'd be any disadvantages because remember, some families only have kids that are boys and are looking for an "older brother" figure. Honestly, just take the chance! What do you have to loose? This experience will teach you so much! You can find me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR", ask as many questions as you'd like!
Djobo, I think that Geaneviv is right! It depends, each family is different so you'll just have to find one looking for a male and then GO FOR IT for sure!
There is no course at college to being an Au Pair, I did it via a travel agency which directed me to Au PairCare! Its a really simple and trusting program! You can find me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR", ask as many questions as you'd like and also tell me on how your experience is going so far!
I’m not experienced but did it once. I was paid 100 euro/ week. If you go through an agency it is more. But it will cost you a lot more. And I paid for my flights :)
@@heyshayla thank you! One of the familys that reached out to me seems perfect but they are only paying me around 100 euro per month and it seems very little for even just living, they are however paying for my ticket and everything in the house
I looked into being an au pair, still kind of looking. I took ASL in school so it limits some options for me. Any suggestions on learning a new language? What programs are the best ect?
you don't have to learn a new language. I was an au pair in new zealand and now I am an au pair in australia and it's been great! (I am german so I kind of had to learn the language :D ) There are so many families in europe who wants their children to speak english and the parents mostly speak english, too. But there are also options where you could do a course and work as an au pair at the same time!
@aboutLeonie is right! Sometimes they prefer you don't know the language so you wont speak it to the kids! I used greataupair.com but I've heard aupairworld.com is good too!
I was just wondering, was it hard to find families that were willing to hire you? I would love to be an Au Pair in Germany because that is where I would like to go to college next school year. I will only be turning 18 this summer though and so I'm worried that that would be a factor that would make it hard for me to get hired, since I'm so young and possibly planning on studying at the same time.. I will still apply and see if it works out but I just figured I'd ask for your opinion as well. :)
It's not unusual to be a young au pair as most of the au pairs are 18 or 19 y/o. Also there are many au pairs who are studying at the same time. Just give it a try and I bet you will find a family :)
I've also been thinking of being an au pair, i just turned 18 I'm in college, but maybe next year during summer while taking online courses and I've thought about either Germany or Spain
I am from Morocco, I am native Arabic speaker and I speak English fluently. I am student of the second year of the university. I have driver license. I am boy, 22 years old, which country you advise me to apply for?

These are fab tips and Yes, you HAVE to love kids! x
I’m on tinder a lot and for the past couple months I kept seeing girls had “au pair” as there occupation and I was like what the hell is that?! Finally after like the 50th girl who had “au pair” as there occupation I searched it on RUclips and found your video 😅
hahaha so glad I could help!
You are an absolute inspiration and I only found your channel about 3 days ago but, I can't wait to see more content. I love your videos and your Instagram is also very inspiring and, Happy early Birthday!!
Wow Erin thank you, I'm so glad you like the channel!
And thank you for the happy birthday :)
This is really helpful, I'm an aupair in the spain as well currently, I've been here since 1st January 2019. Would like to share more about aupairing :). Thanks for this video
Yay!! Good, please answer questions in this thread!!
I've a questiondo you have to pay for your flights to the country and back or do they pay for that
This helped me soooooo much! I leave tomorrow and I’m freaking out
OMG GOOD luck! DM me on Instagram: @livingonaoneway if you have any questions!
How was it?
This is is GOLD thank you Shayla
Happy Birthday! Thank you for being true to yourself and sharing your values, beliefs and inspiring life with the world. I hope to do the same one day through RUclips. I did get my first international/solo/volunteer teaching trip this year, so just beginning my journey.
😊🌈✨
YAY!!! CONGRATS!! I'm so excited for you and your upcoming adventure!
And thank you for your kind words!
She has so much in common with me :-)
i am looking for a host family would love to be your au pair.
Bankai Tmg i am sorry I already have a new au pair 😞
@@ambers6789 i decided not to be an aupair.i almost got scammed and lost my entire week running to get my documents ready.
Bankai Tmg oof, I’m sorry
1- Even humanitarian work doesn't get you as close to the culture as this type of experience does. I keep thinking of the word "embedded", but doesn't sound quite right. 2- Happy Birthday! Enjoy your day 🎂!!.. And. 3- Seth is correct, there is a 5 second rule, especially for donut filling rescue. It's in the Geneva Convention! Keep it on a one way!! 😊
Mario, the word you're looking for is Immersed I think!!
Thank you for the birthday wishes and I fully support the donut filling rescue as well hahaha
Love the video!! You truly inspire me!!! Have a fabulous birthday!!!! I live in Missouri and you should totally come here!! So many great hikes and places to visit! Great people and super cute little towns!!
Thank you!!
I had NO IDEA there was all that in Missouri!
youtube just recommended me your channel and i think ive never suscribed so fast!! you make me laugh in every video
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Hahaha welcome, and I'm stoked you like the videos!!
Do people typically look for younger people? Like college age? I'm 30 and wanting to do this in Spain.
I was an au pair in United States!! I had the best experience ever!
Omgosh I have been watching your videos for a while and I never knew you were an au pair. I am currently on my second au pair year
One of my best friends is currently an au pair in Madrid! Crazy!
Editing to add: Seth’s donut at the end had me cackling 😂
That's so close to wehre I did it!! SO FUN!!
I love that you watch until the end every tiiiiiiime!!! haha I know that was hilarious!
Living On A One Way girl of course!! Happy birthday one day early as well! 😘
THIS IS AMAZING! Thank you! I wish I had known this when I was younger.
I always wanted to travel and this is the best solution.
"You have to like kids" 🤣🤣🤣
This is super cool!!! This is totally something I’d wanna try
It was a great way to see a country!
GREAT POINT!!!
Hola, i'm currently an aupair in spain, I came from Indonesia 😄
Kids not liking peanut butter?! That was at least 25% of my diet growing up! From PB&J, to carrots and PB, to Ritz and PB. I don't know what life would be like without peanut butter.
ME TOO!!!!
It’s so nasty, I don’t understand how anyone could eat it. 🤢
I've learnt so much(I also subscribed as soon as I saw you) 😅😁
Yay!!! Maybe if you and your friend got placed in a similar town?
Always love your videos x) Happy early birthday!
Thank you so much, I"m glad you love the videos it's soooo helpful to hear!
THANK YOU!!!
I’m an current Au pair and I can relate to this
Good! I'm glad this is relatable and you have had a similar experience!
Great video. It sounds like a great experience. I have to agree with the kids though peanut butter is a Nono for me.😂
hahaha stooooop its the greatest thing ever!!!
You can fine me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR", ask as many questions as you'd like and let me know how your experience is going!
hey shay, too tired to watch right now but look forward to it tomo!!!!
Happy F$@%ing birthday!!!! I/We should expect/hope a two hour video next Wednesday with the Sis is in the making...
hahahahah I just told her to start videoing her side! Great idea!
Cool video! I'll be an aupair this year but through an agency and for a year:)
yay!!! Where are you going?
Interesting stuff lovely! What an amazing channel. So fab!
Thanks Lucy!
Lots of people are talking about going to spain, italy, germany etc, but for me it's my biggest dream to live in the us (as or as not an au pair)
Come on over!
I'd go if it would be that easy😄
Same xd
Que genial!. Visitaste Toledo? Avila? Madrid? Sevilla? Spain is so cool.
Si visité Toledo, Madrid y Sevilla pero cuando estaba en escuela!
i love this Video and your Englisch! I could understand you very well (i'm German) THANK YOU
Oh thats so good to hear!! That also means you're very good at English, most people say I talk too fast!
OK, great video. My question is can males be a nanny? What if you are already 68? Can a person that old be a nanny? OBVIOUSLY you would not be able to run that good, but if you had the will you could be a good teacher. Do people care how old you are?
Thank you for making this video! Super interesting!
Of course!! Glad it was helpful!
I should start learning languages! 😁😁
Happy Birthday !!
Thanks Greg!!
Hola , me gusto mucho tu vídeo y feliz cumpleaños. ☺️
Ah muchas gracias!!!
Out of context bu These earrings are great on you! 😍
haha thank you! THey're my favorite!
Living On A One Way haha they match your eyes. Nice video btw 😜😍
You mean when you get to their house or before you get to their house?
@@heyshayla Before you get there, some specific things for when trying to establish whether you and the family will be a good match. :)
Asking about discipline is important, if you'll have your private time and space. This is a good question! I"m not sure what else I would ask!
Okay so stupid question but I'm a vegetarian and since you live with your host family and have meals with them, how does that work out if their food choices dont coincide with yours?
That would be something you’d talk about before you got there! I’m sure they’d be happy to accommodate!
That’s so cool
Love your channel I look forward to wednesday when you post :) My question is how fluent do I need to be to be an Au Pair? I really want to go to Italy when I graduate but I don’t speak Italian at all.
You don't need to be fluent at all! Sometimes they prefer you aren't so that you only speak your native language to their kids!!
I'm so happy you love the videos, that is so great to hear! Keeps me going!
Each family is different, if it's a religious family they may prefer you were, but I'd say it's not going to be a big things everywhere!
Im also an au pair! Great video :)
Where are you and au pair?!
Hey I’m an au pair in Los Angeles :)
Oh wow I bet that’s wild!
Do you think you could do an erasmus and be an au pair? (Erasmus is like an scholarship in Europe flor going to university abroad) Like do you think you could go to university? Hi from Madrid!
From my experience, yes you can ! 😊
How can l apply to be A great aupair am interested to find job
Go to the website greataupair.com
Find out the rules of the country. Most countries in Europe have 30 hours for au pair. USA itis 45 hours per week.
Wow! This is so cool!
i wanna do au pair in ireland:)
Does the host take the employees for free of cost..Actually I afraid if I pay for the registration then it wouldn't be refund if I didn't get visa and flight tickets..please help me..
You likely wont be refunded, make sure you feel good about the place you pay the registration
When the family asks for years of experience do they mean prior experience as an au pair or with children?
I think experience with children, just note that in your profile :)
Have you ever had an experience where it was 'dangerous' and you had to get out of there?
I have not
What if you don't like the food the host gives you id feel so awkward
You ask if you can add a few things to the grocery list snd tell them what you like ahead of time.
They want you to be comfortable
Hi I have a question that I can't seem to get an answer for. So I'm 31 years old living in the USA as a nanny. I have a extensive amount of experience caring for children: babysitting, preschool teacher and for the past 7 years i have been a nanny. I love to travel so naturally becoming an au pair sounds like a dream however, I am hearing some things about how you can only get a work visa if you are 30. Is there a way around this work visa or simply another option for older people?
I didn’t get a visa I just worked on a tourist visa. Also look up “adventure nanny”!
I want to ask you, is there a deposit for money at home or in the family that will cover all your expenses while paying money? Because they asked me to deposit 1,000 pounds
Every program is different but I did not have to do a deposit
Awsome Video!
Did you find that the pay was enough for your extra traveling and personal expenses while there or should you have money saved up?
Have money saved up, you always want your flight home paid for or enough to be able to buy one whenever. It was only an extra $100/ week and everything I NEEDED was taken care of but it was nice to have the extra money!
I had some terrible aupair experiences
Really! Why was it terrible! I'd love to hear about it, will you DM me on instagram?
Could you tell me
Hi, not sure if you will see this but was wonder I’m going to be an au pair in Italy for the first time and was wondering is 200 a month to cheap in your opinion?
It depends on what else is offered, what you’re looking for in the experience and what your jobs are :) some countries have minimums so google that too. AUPAIRWORLD.com has a ton of great information!
Yeah... the whole kid thing is my issue 😬
bhahahaha its good to be honest with yourself!!
I think you can apply to just look after tween/teenage kids too, if that's more your speed :)
Do you know if it is best to have some sort of degree or be a certain age? I graduated high school last year and have wanted to travel my whole life but have never had the means to do so. Would you recommend being older than 19?
Nope! I think you are just fine, each family is different and has different requirements!
I just signed up today. Do u wait for the families to message you or you message them first ??
Either way, you can message them, some will message you!
I'm 18 years old and want to be an AUpair, but I want to go to college as well. Should I go to college or try being an AUpair first?
Also how can I convince my parents to let me be an AUpair?
You could totally do it in the summer between semesters!
@@heyshayla Thank you!!!
I am 18 as well. I am taking a gap year and then I will go to college.
Any thoughts on male au pair? I would imagine there may be some disadvantages, as far as getting hired?
@@Geanieinabottle thanks for taking the time :)
Geaneviv!! Thank you for commenting!
Djobo, I think that Geaneviv is right! It depends, each family is different so you'll just have to find one looking for a male and then GO FOR IT for sure!
Where do you prefer to go au pair. Because I don't know a lot of places
I loved Spain
Do people go to some college or do some courses there if they want to along with being an au pair ?
There is no course at college to being an Au Pair, I did it via a travel agency which directed me to Au PairCare! Its a really simple and trusting program!
You can find me on my youtube channel "EVERYTHING AU PAIR", ask as many questions as you'd like and also tell me on how your experience is going so far!
Also what is IG stories? I am a patrion.
If anyone reads this and is experienced on au pair, what is a normal pay for an au pair and should the family pay for your tickets?
I’m not experienced but did it once. I was paid 100 euro/ week. If you go through an agency it is more. But it will cost you a lot more. And I paid for my flights :)
@@heyshayla thank you! One of the familys that reached out to me seems perfect but they are only paying me around 100 euro per month and it seems very little for even just living, they are however paying for my ticket and everything in the house
so can you just end your contract like that?do they pay you in cash weekly
I looked into being an au pair, still kind of looking. I took ASL in school so it limits some options for me. Any suggestions on learning a new language? What programs are the best ect?
you don't have to learn a new language. I was an au pair in new zealand and now I am an au pair in australia and it's been great! (I am german so I kind of had to learn the language :D )
There are so many families in europe who wants their children to speak english and the parents mostly speak english, too. But there are also options where you could do a course and work as an au pair at the same time!
@@aboutLeonie what site did you use?
@@dsagirl8308 aupairworld.com :)
@aboutLeonie is right! Sometimes they prefer you don't know the language so you wont speak it to the kids! I used greataupair.com but I've heard aupairworld.com is good too!
@aboutleonie thanks for jumping in on this!
@@aboutLeonie That's good to know, thank you :) hopefully it all works out then haha
Thank you so much for answering these!!!!
I agree with @aboutLeonie too! I think as long as you tell the family you'll find out if they are okay with it or not :)
I've also been thinking of being an au pair, i just turned 18 I'm in college, but maybe next year during summer while taking online courses and I've thought about either Germany or Spain
love your channel
Hear hear! 👍
Thank you!!

Check out the websites and see if you can email them and they can answer your question. I'm not sure.
Good content! I make Au Pair and immigration videos as well!
I am from Morocco, I am native Arabic speaker and I speak English fluently. I am student of the second year of the university. I have driver license. I am boy, 22 years old, which country you advise me to apply for?
Can i apply as a aupair ?i am 30 years old and i have only proficiency language is english ?
