Is NYC's Best Pizza in CHINATOWN? Is Scarr's Pizza Worth The Hype?

  • Out of all the best pizzas in New York City, Scarr's Pizza is not only one that I get recommended the most frequently, it is also the most interesting pizza joint to me. Scarr's Pizza in Chinatown is located in a neighborhood that you wouldn't think to be a hub for pizza. Indeed it is not, as the vast majority of foods in that neighborhood are Asian foods and not a pizza joint. So it's really saying a lot if a pizza shop in Chinatown is regarded as one of the best pizzas in NYC.
Scarr's PIzza was closed for a bit due to a fire but has since reopened. It has gotten some mixed reviews since reopening, with some people saying it's one of the best slices in NYC still, or at least one of the best pizzas in Manhattan, while others say it has fallen off. We will find out together! Scarr's Pizza may no longer be a hidden gem like it once was, as now there is often a line out the door, but it is still one of the less well-known pizza shops in NYC. We will see if it lives up to the hype and if it's one of the best restaurants in Chinatown and one of the best pizzas in New York in general!

Great review, and welcome home! I haven't been down there yet, but I've heard good things. For me, 90% of the time, I'm a pizza purist. I want my NYC cheese slice. With that being said, this version looks great! No flop, thin, crispy and doughy at the same time. Would I go all the way downtown just to try it? Probably not. But, I'd definitely pop in if I were down there. Thanks again, UA!

U gotta try out "Jubilee's market" cheese sliders in Brooklyn. The owner based his sliders off of white manna. It's only $2.55. just ate there and many it's pretty damn good for the price. And I don't know if the owner can continue to keep it at that price. I had a little chat with him and he said they're losing money on each slider. And he's hoping the money the supermarket generates can allow them to continue keeping it at that price. So I don't know if it'll stay at that price for long. I say you get there before it ends or gets more expensive.

Some insight about Italian food that is true to the regions, cities and towns of Italy rather than a century of Italian-American cooking that is very different: Great Italian food is simple and shows off great products prepared correctly - the opposite of the American (and Italian-American) attitude that more is better. The star of a true Italian pizza in its various forms is the dough, fermented properly to develop flavor and, when cooked, the right texture. Toppings are meant to compliment the dough, not overwhelm it. They can be as simple as possible extra virgin olive oil and sea salt as in Piazza Bianca.

I was there the other day, got a slice, calzone and large fountain soda for 11 bucks total - can't beat it ... and it's not good for the price... id pay double easily for the slice but Gio keeps it affordable for everyone

I continue to be impressed at how carefully you monitor your sensations and then analyze what you ate how you reacted to it and then most important, how the ingredients and their preparation led to the result. Food culture not only survives but advances because of people who think like you. You think like a cook, not a reviewer. As a cook, if you're not quite happy with something you are honest about it and try to understand why and imagine how to improve. Those who don't will never get better in a whole lifetime. I'm prejudiced but I I always think the simplest dishes are the best. A piece of good bread, a good steak, a beautiful tomato, a bowl of perfect rice--just eat them plain and what more could you ask? Why try to create some novel thing like that pizza where you can predict that extra honey and wet peppers are going to ruin the crust?

advice on flop test. with ny slices, you judge the pizza after folding it to the test of the gluten strength in the crust. therefore, ny pizza should not be crispy/crunchy on a standalone which would be straight as a board. once you've folded it, if it still flops then it's a bad NY pizza.

Chinese, Japanese, Singaporean, Malay and Thai- I'd still say NYC; higher profit margins, and lower taxes attract more talented Asian chefs to NYC.

Pizza maker added way too much sauce in the middle, should be crispy all the way through and hopefully they reheated it in the oven too to get that crunch.

We have pizza equivalent to this, but personal preference does matter. NY/NJ pizza, I find tends to be cooked longer than here. What have you tried? North of Brooklyn or Makers are good. Badali's get's good reviews, but I never had it. I used to bring pizzas on carry-on, flying back to Toronto. Funny enough, there's a legit place in Newmarket...but a lot of the "good" pizza here is Naples style, or the crust is way too thick... It's getting better here! Have faith!
