    I didn't know you could group instruments like that and cycle through them so seamlessly. And the tip for automatically turning off the instruments when not in use is simply genius, and for someone like myself struggling with CPU on a low end macbook, it's immensely helpful! Thank you!

      Joao Letelier that’s super cool to hear! For years I’ve also been trying to squeeze out the most I can out of my MacBook. I can also recommend (heartily) upgrading the main hard drive to an SSD (I even removed my DVD drive to add a second one later). This was an absolutely crazy improvement - but obviously only for macs from certain years.
      Thanks for letting me know it was helpful - really makes it worth making these videos!

    Hey Andri... I was trying to put together one of these racks cuz it's high time I cleaned up my workflow and your videos really inspired me to Marie Kondo my live sets . I had a question though. Say I have two instances of a VST synth in a rack. I map filter cutoff and resonance of both to Macro 1 and 2 of the rack. Is there any way of setting it up so tweaking one of them won't change the settings on the other? Say for example I want the default cutoff on Synth A to be closed and B to be open. Can it be set up in such a way that the knob shifts to the setting I last left it at rather than tweaking both simultaneously?

    Feedback is always nice when you produce content so I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for sharing this content. It was very well done, professional. The only thing you left out is that you have to create an Options.txt file in the preference folder of Ableton with the following, including dash for the item to appear in the menu.
    -EnableMapToSiblings=1
    I had to Google why I could not find the Map To Siblings in my menu for I mistakenly thought maybe it was Copy Values to Siblings for it was the only item I had in my menu with the term Siblings but after about 45 minutes of trial and error I got the correct information and it worked like a Charm.
    I came across your tutorial trying to run different instruments out of the same VST, such as a Kontakt Instrument but using a different sound from the same Instrument or using Serum and having a certain sequence of sounds that I want to layer, playing the exact same sequence of notes but different sounds out of the same VST, layering them and building, so when song starts maybe only one instance of a sound, but after so many bars another instance of the same sequence of notes from the VST with a different additional sound playing same midi notes, adding as many sounds as I want to really layer the sounds playing that sequence of notes and I want to do this without too many tracks. I want the instances to appear in the clip section, layering the sequence clip after clip in the same track.
    Still not sure how to achieve this but loved what I did learn from your tutorial and want to express my gratitude.

    • @AndriSoren

      Eric thank you so much for your warm words and taking the time to leave your detailed feedback. Indeed I forgot to include the options.txt part as (shame on me) I set it so very long ago that I had taken it for granted. The problem with RUclips videos is that it's not possible to edit them or update them very easily or clearly - which is what I do with the videos and content in my school WRKSHP.eu but I'll take this learning forward, as well as your kind encouragement.
      I struggled slightly to follow your explanation of the problem (which isn't a criticism, it's very hard to verbalise a lot of these things) - but there might be 2/3 angles to look at:
      1) using internal MIDI channel settings of Kontakt to have different instruments respond to different channels.
      2) seeing if the programme change messages in clips can be of any use in this context (they are powerful and often forgotten)
      3) using an instrument rack's other options such as velocity and key-range settings, as well as the chain selector. They are much more powerful than people think.
      4) for truly complex routings, you can use internal MIDI routing such as MIDI Pipe or on Mac the built in IAC driver.
      5) drum racks are also a powerful place for triggering various things from one track (in combination with 4) or by bringing in multiple instrument racks to a drum rack.
      Hope some of that might inspire a solution or a way forward, and thanks again Eric

      Hey so I know this is 6 months out, but if you still need an answer, or if anyone else is trying to do the same thing, I'm going to take a stab at solving this for you!
      So, from my understanding, you have a sequence of notes (melody, ARP, etc.) that, in the beginning of the song, is played by one instrument/instance of a VST. By the end of the song, it's played by multiple instruments/instances of the same or various VST(s). instead of having, say, 5 different tracks, for workflow purposes or organization purposes, you would like to have all these instances play on the same track and be triggered by different clips. So for example, one clip contains the sequence of notes with 1 instrument/instance, one clip contains the sequence of notes with 2 instruments/instances, etc. If this sounds like what you're trying to do, I have an answer for you!
      Step 1 - Create an instrument rack and put all instances/instruments on the rack
      Step 2- Open the chain section of the rack.
      Step 3- Instrument 1 (the first instrument to play the sequence), set the zone as 10-50. Instrument 2, the second instrument added to your sequence of notes, set the zone as 20-50. Instrument 3, 30-50; Instrument 4, 40-50; Instrument 5, 50. These numbers are arbitrary, I just used intervals of 10 so you can actually "see" the zones.
      Step 4 - Add in as many clips as you have instruments on the rack
      Step 5 - On clip 1, under the envelope section, select Instrument Rack and then underneath it, Chain Selector.
      Step 6 - Add in a value of "10" across the clip for clip 1. For clip 2, add in a value of 20. For clip 3, add in a value of 30, etc.
      That's it!
      So now, when you trigger clip 1, it will be playing only the first instrument off your instrument rack. When you trigger clip 2, it will be playing both instruments 1&2; clip 3 plays instruments 1,2,&3, etc. Then just add in the notes you want these instruments to play and you're all set. Hope this helps!!

  • @jamesmutan1

    So i just have one doubt, if you have several clips in this channel, launched automatically by "follow action", how do you automate the instrument change?

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  2 года назад +1

      Good question Jaime. Just record some automation for the chain selector. This can even be just one “data point” in the automation, setting it to a constant setting. If you hold down the shift key while moving these automation points, it makes it slightly easier to move them by just a small amount. You can even use the same trick on Push to record in the chain selector position to a clip. Does that make sense?

    • @jamesmutan1
      @jamesmutan1 2 года назад +1

      @@AndriSoren yes! Perfectly, thanks for the reply. Also, if I may ask again, how do you set a default value for each instrument? So that when you choose it with the macro from the chain selector, it goes exactly to a specified configuration, and then from here start moving the values on live performances.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  2 года назад +1

      @@jamesmutan1 another good question / idea. When creating any kind of rack in Live, the moment you “save” the rack into your library, the settings of the macros at that moment are set as the default state of that rack. So if after moving a macro you later select a it and press delete (or hold delete on push and tap the macro knob) it will reset to the default setting.
      That said, Ableton Live sometimes behaves a little strangely in regards to macros that have been recorded into clips, though this is mostly when one is creating clips on the fly during a live performance. Using dummy clips to control the macros of other tracks / clips (ie using max4live) can also introduce some unexpected behaviour. For example live might sometimes “jump” a macro to the place it was set manually once the automation on the chain selector has run its course.
      I recommend testing whatever you set up to destruction before taking it live, in any case. There’s lots of amazing discussions like these within the Push Bible too, I should mention.

    Great video, you got a like and subscribe from me. I would like to know which knob on the push you map the chain selector to? I have an apc40 mkii, it feel like it would be a pain to have to look at the chain selector on the computer scree to make sure its enabling the instrument you want during a live performance.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  4 года назад

      Hi Aaron - Sorry for the slow response - I was too occupied launching the school!
      I always map the chain selector to the first macro knob (far left on Push) so that
      1) it's harder to accidentally move it, as there is at least no knob to the left
      2) muscle memory means I always move there to change instrument, on any rack
      3) I never look at the computer screen - by keeping just 8 key macros in use for any device, I build up muscle memory and habits. I made a video about that here studio.ruclips.net/user/videoJcioRrnTszI/comments
      Hope that helps! Let me know!

    Am I right in thinking that in order to use this technique with different instruments, you need to put *those instruments* in racks of their own in order to use map to siblings? Macro 1 of the master would then be mapped to Macro 1 of all the component instruments.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  4 года назад +1

      Fred Beecher that is definitely a way of doing it Fred - indeed once you get to using a variety of instruments in one rack, some gentle work-arounds are necessary. I tend to test it out on 2/3 different instruments, map them all individually, then group them, check it’s all working as I’d like it to and then start bringing in all the rest!

      Don’t be sorry! It’s a method of having a large number of sounds at your fingertips, a little like on a physical keyboard or synth where there is a knob quickly through presets. Live doesn’t have this by default and Push’s own browser is less than ideal and almost unusable for a live performance situation. This technique helps keep us in flow, moving quickly, and avoiding menus.

    Thank you for uploading these tips.. Most I did, but a couple I did not know. The key question I have is regarding Push (Or indeed any other midi controller.) Have you managed to find a way of midi mapping the controller to the macros, but actually saving the cc mapping so that when you add one of those racks into a project, the midi mapping is still there? I'll be amazed and very thankful if you have.

    I am very new to Ableton Live. I will ofcourse take your word that this is useful in some way, but showing how it is in a real world situation would help. I did like the CPU saving effect and can see where that immediately is helpful. So you have instruments on different macro's between 0 and 127 do you implement them using midi. Is it mapped automatically when you record a song or are these used differently. Also if you have 2 overlaying a little say the first instrument 0 - 4 and the second 2 - 6 would the setting 2 or 3 play both overlaping sounds at the same time? I will find out by testing this later on Ableton Live so no real need to answer. I will endure to find a tutorial where this type of usage is shown practically so that I can understand how to use it effectively. Cheers for sharing...

    One example would be to have your BBass only respond to midi signals from channel 1, Bit Growl Bass from channel 2 and BSeven Bass from channel 3

    If you don't mind I just wanted this one to be clarified.
    Actually I have two midi track one with sd3 vst and another one with multiple drum rack in an instrument rack.
    In the 1st instrument drum rack..
    Notes C#1 & D1 has chimes samples and C2 has a Tamb Loop.
    And in the 2nd midi track, I am using the SD3 instrument rack, where I have created multiple instances of the SD3 instrument to omit C#1, D1 & C2 for samples and loops to be triggered in the 1st Drum rack.
    Rest all the other midi notes will be triggered by the sd3.
    My question is, is this the way to do it or some other method to achieve what i wanted?
    Because the way I did will create multiple instances of sd3 vst (i.e 3 in my case) and this affects my cpu usage. and moreover this is for one song. Some other songs have samples and loops placed in different notes in drum rack.
    Earlier I used the mainstage for this where I can assign the drum pad to trigger which vst midi note needs to be played and it was working fine.
    But mainstage is not stable with loops. I am getting a slight delay with the playback plugin while triggering the loops.
    Please help me with this.
    Thanks.

    For me in order to turn instruments on and off with the chain selector I have to use inverse values. I use AU/VSTs as instruments. Everything work as you describe, but I have to put the top value of a blue block in the chain timeline to the Min value in the map and the bottom value of the blue block in the Max value. So if an instrument should be active between chain selector values 5-8, I enter 8 in the Min field and 5 in the Max field. That way the instruments turn on and off correctly. Beats me why. Am I doing something wrong perhaps?

    Hi Andri, thanks so much for the device on/off hint, that saved me a lot of effort. I am currently creating an external Intrument selector rack where I can select all of my external gear (synth and drum computers). I also make use of the snapshot view to store each device as snapshot to be able to select via the name I gave the snapshot and each snapshot has the corresponding chain to the instrumet selected. Works well so far but I got some issues that the audio was audible in one channel from multiple synth also if only one chain for the specific synth was selected (maybe the range was to low? First synth 0-0, second synth 1-1, third synth 2 -2 ....). So with the device on/off mapping I think it should work as expected. I will check this out today. Many thanks for that!

    Really useful man!... Can I ask, how would you go about organizing a full live set with, say, 12 songs... Would you do the composing process on a separate set or would you do it all on one single set? If the former, would you just drag and drop your song to your full live set?... I've tried that but it's too time consuming and I was wondering if there's a simpler way to do it... thx so much for sharing!... best regards

The only way I can figure is to have 60+ racks open for every custom patch. I am in a variety cover band by the way, hence the high number of patches.

    Great video. A lot of awesome info explained very well. One thing you could add to your videos if you haven’t started already, and that’s examples of situations that you’d use a setup just like this. I’m not really seeing why you would go to all this extent to do this when I believe there’s other ways to have those 3 instruments open to play. But, I’m somewhat new to this. Having to reach for the mouse to get to that one dial to switch instruments only to go too far and accidentally select the one you don’t want. Seems kind of finicky. But, that’s what these vids are all about. Learning Ableton. Thanks again, How to…well explained.

    If switching through instruments and presets is your thing, Cantabile is worth looking at. It is much deeper and more customisable than Ableton for this sort of thing, and you get text feedback of which instrument / preset you have selected rather than just a chain select number. Unfortunately there is no sequencer, so it's really more oriented towards live sets and jamming.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  3 года назад

      Ah! Does it integrate with Push well? By that I mean the text feedback appears on Push’s screen somehow? Did a quick google but didn’t come up with much.

    • @cs7160
      @cs7160 3 года назад +1

      @@AndriSoren not as far as I'm aware, unless you are very proficient at hacking your Live! You can get Cantabile to switch presets / instruments via CC and then send back the names of preset and instruments via sysex. Then you program a midi controller yourself (Arduino Leo with some encoders and a display) to interface with Cantabile. If you want to integrate Ableton, you would have to route midi from Ableton to Cantabile. If your soundcard allows it, you can also route audio from cantabile back to Ableton to complete the loop, now you essentially have Cantabile as an external instrument which is totally controlled via the Arduino. I did all this over winter (the things lockdown will do to you...). Not even sure if it was worth in the end, time will tell if I keep this current setup!

    Hi Andri, great video! I haven’t used this feature before, despite being a long time Ableton user so thanks for the great tutorial. Question about the chain values though - you mention that you want 1 instrument per every 5 values (0-4, 5-9 etc) but is there a specific reason you chose that range? I would think its easier to map them to every 1 value so the brain remembers that each value step equals a different instrument. But maybe there is a reason you like extra headroom in case you want to adjust the fade slider (top bar you mention in the chain ranges)? Thanks!

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  3 года назад +1

      Hey Mark, happy to have helped! I chose that range here for no particular reason > but < usually I use a range of 2 or 3 per instrument, simply because Push’s encoders are so sensitive that it’s too easy to accidentally nudge the knob while performing and accidentally change the instrument. For a production setup, 1 instrument per value is fine, although with many computers you still start to struggle if you have many tracks and many super instrument racks.
      What is true is that due to the manual mapping of on/off values you do ideally want to set it once and not change it later on, or generally use the same numbering logic for multiple racks.
      Hope that helps!

    When you are performing a piece does it work better to have assigned each instrument to a single number in the chain or to a range (like the three groups of five in your example)? Push 2 shows the exact number as you turn the control and it might be easier to associate that with a particular instrument, but that may be too much fine tuning during a performance.
    I’m sure you will cover questions like these in your course, but as I experiment it seems like a fair amount of busy-work to change this after the fact. Thanks!

    This is great, you can also automate the chain selector too so when u change song your instrument sound is set up automatically.
    One thing is I can't figure out is u can't automate macro variations. So if u messe with all the dials and mess up the sound , I'm trying to find a way to get back to a default sound without manually clicking the macro variation.
