  • Hello lovelies,
Today I will be trying Marilyn Monroe's 1959 skincare routine created by Erno Lazlo.
Marilyn Monroe went to great lengths to ensure her skin was perfect. She enlisted Erno Lazlo, who catered to old Hollywood royalty with his groundbreaking skincare techniques. There is a written copy of Marilyn Monroe's prescription that consists of a complicated series of solutions and potions that were created specifically for her. Most of the products from her skincare routine are still available today, including the moisturizing bar of soap, which was supposed to be rinsed with thirty splashes of water instructed by Erno Lazlo.
    Marilyn Monroe's skin care regime:
"Erno Laszlo not only heals my skin, but he soothes my soul"
    MARILYN MONROE
Dr. Laszlo specifically created Phormula 3-8 for Marilyn Monroe to heal a scar on her stomach and kept her well stocked with Active Phelityl Cream, an all purpose moisturizer, for her signature on-screen glow.
    Morning Routine:
Marilyn's morning routine began with a face cleansing using Erno Lazlo Active Phelityl Soap and warm water. After cleansing, she was instructed to apply Erno Laszlo Normalizer Shake-It. This product was a tinted mattifying toner that was relaunched in honor of the brand's partnership with the makeup museum. Marilyn was told to shake the bottle and saturate a piece of cotton "to the dripping point" and applying it all over her face, except the delicate eye area, then blotting off immediately. For the eyes, Marilyn was to use the Erno Laszlo pHelitone Eye Cream, which has been discontinued, followed by the discontinued Duo-Phase Face Powder over her entire face and neck.
    Evening Routine:
Before retiring to bed in the evening, Marilyn was instructed to apply Erno Laszlo's Active Phelityl Oil to the skin, rinsing it off, then drying with a towel. Next, the rich Erno Laszlo Active Phelityl Cream was to be applied to the entire face and washed off with a piece of cotton saturated, this time with well-shaken Erno Laszlo Controlling Lotion toner. The skin was to be again dried with a clean towel, with the Controlling Lotion re-applied only to the nose and chin areas and left to dry thoroughly overnight.

For a photographic look of what Marilyn's skin looked like while using the Erno Laszlo products, I can recommend doing a search of the photo session she did in 1962, the year she passed away, with photographer Willy Rizzo. Her skin has that soft matte focus that the Shake It toner combined with the Laszlo duo phase powder produces. She's definitely less glowy than her earlier photos we are used to seeing. The Vaseline highlighting/priming and heavier cream-based makeup don't appear to be something she wore unless she was filming at that point in her life. Her lipstick shades had also changed from the glossy, red hot reds to a peachy softer shade then based on photographs. I suspect her skin was changing as well with age. She was 36 years old, hardly old at all, but her skin seemed very different than it was in her 20's glamour photo sessions. She was morphing into a softer, freer, more natural look. I wonder who she may have become in her journey.

She had always used orange lipstick, Technicolor just made it look red. They had to work backwards to get the color they wanted on film. Same with contouring!

    • @renatatarnawski5974

      Her lipstick was actually
      A bright orange
      It showed Red on Film
      It was Pure Pigment
      Red lipstick even tho
      It had been taken off
      Still looked blue on film

That is why she used Vaseline & Nivea, I understand that she and Lazlo used to argue quite often. My mothers friend who was from Belgium was an assistant to Lazlo & friends with Marilyn. She left to marry in 1959, but she and my mother remained friends from 1950 to my mothers death.

Here’s a little advice. When cleansing the face or when applying moisturizer, sunscreen, or even foundation, try applying the product to your face using an upward massage motion instead of an downward massage motion. The upward massage motion will help to contradict sagging of our skin due to gravity and age. :)

Marilyn didn’t start using Erno Laszlo until the late 1950s, and I think her skin looked drier after she used EL over time. Her skin was much more glowy prior to that time.

I used to use the Shake-It back in the early 1980's. Lazlo was very, very chic at the time. I was pleased with the Shake-It but couldn't continue using it because of the price. A shame because I had extremely oily skin back then and the Shake-It seemed to help normalize it. Nowadays I have normal-to-dry skin and won't go near Lazlo products because of all the alcohol in them (and also the price).
Loved the video, great job and I admire your courage in trying all these old techniques. Because of you I am once again using Vaseline on very dry patches on my body, and it works better than anything else. I wouldn't touch it for years until I saw your videos.

For the Shake it you need a cotton ball. The instructions say apply and dripping, then wipe. I used Laszlo for years. The cleansing routine is the absolute magic. They still sell the products but are teaching the correct cleansing routine for each skin type. There is also a very emollient phelityl cream to be used on normal to dry areas for that extra moisture barrier. Which is even used on oily skin. If used with proper instruction your skin will be the best EVER! I can promise that!

  • @jeantaylor5742

I used Erno Laszlo in the mid 1970’s and got so many compliments on my skin. It became too expensive to continue however. At the Neiman Marcus beauty counter they would analyze your skin ( based on a clock- my skin was 12:00-normal.) Then they picked out the appropriate products and gave specific instructions on their use. I remember using the oil, then the soap, THEN the shake-it tinted treatment. I also had an eyecream and the powder. In the evening I cleansed the same way, followed by the toner, then the cream last. Perhaps Marilyn’s skin was oilier than mine?

Hi..just discovered your channel this am….I used to use Lazlo for yrs….I had his big book too….the reason for removing the cream w/toner is bc his philosophy was that creams made your skin saggy….he said like throwing a scoop of ice on the wall & it runs down…..so his creams hydrate, then you remove excess to keep skin firm

I am very happy to see this video. I have been a Lazslo devotee for the last 20 years. I get many compliments on my skin. Everyone tells me my skin glows, is very clean and smooth. I use the phelityl oil, sea mud soap, phelityl lotion, active cream, light controlling lotion. The Normalizer shake it just made a return about a year ago. I used it for several years then became unavailable in this country for many years. The key to the entire line is the cleansing ritual - using the oil on dry skin, followed by the massage w/ the cleansing bar, working up a lather between the hands from the bar and massaging into the face and neck, then rinsing 20 times w/ the same "cleansing water", followed by ten splashes w/ fresh hot water. Pat the skin dry, while the skin is still warm and moist apply the toner, followed by the appropriate treatment products, then seal in w/ the prescribed moisturizer. Your skin will be glowing and youthful.

The more complicated a skincare routine the more I think MM would Like it, she would have loved all the directions as well because she always had to be told what to do, so I suppose Lazlo tapped into her need for her neurotic tendencies for someone to direct everything she did including a face care routine, There are many people like that as well so this tapped into a market of people who were looking for that,Kudos to him for finding that niche in the market

You look so young w/o makeup. Like really young! It's amazing! I need to know about your nails, Laura. Do you sell those on your site? Or do you get them manicured like that? They're gorgeous!

I have been a dedicated Erno Laszlo user for decades. I think if you have dry skin you should use the Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement which doesn't contain alcohol. The Phelityl Night Cream is really for combination/oily skin. Are you still using EL?

Great video Laura! I feel for you though, because the whole routine seemed too abrasive. My skin is very sensitive, so I wouldn't ever be able to to do this kind of a routine. The toner might be Witch Hazel. We loved it in the 70s. 😃💕⚘💄🌿

I think todays bb and cc creams are a take on the shake it, there are some good ones out there which give that Matt yet dewy complexion. Alot of alcohol in all the products which isn’t good for the skin after time. Lamar cream have similar ingredients to the night cream without the alcohol and is a lot cheaper so that could be an alternative.

I remember similar items in the later 60s & 70s. Everything had so much alcohol in it, I've heard from a Dr talking about the times & how some people developed pancreatitis & cirrhosis of the liver because the skin is the largest organ & with as much as people actually drank then slathering it all over, they were pickled inside & out 😮😢 🥒

This routine is insane! How much earlier did you have to wake up to get all this done?

I'm sure someone already mentioned this but when you were putting on the toner you were supposed to drench the pad and lightly rub around your face avoiding the eyes and lips but it appears to me that you were practically scrubbing the pad on your face for a very long time which would in fact eradicate any moisturizing from the prewash oil. The "shake it normalizing" cream you seemed to put it on the way the it was directed for the toner.

If you have oil or really oily skin you might break out a little more at first because this brings everything to the surface.

It works quite good to use the shake-it over a thin coat of Vaseline as primer. Pretty sure that’s how Marilyn might have balanced it.
