- Chidinma Adetshina, a strong contender in the Miss South Africa pageant, which will be held on Saturday at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, has withdrawn from the competition.
The 23-year-old emerged as a central figure in the country’s xenophobia debate and discussions on national identity after advancing to the Top 30 and becoming a finalist in the Miss SA competition.
She gave in on Thursday morning, weeks after South Africans called for her disqualification over issues related to her nationality.
According to information on the Miss South Africa organisation’s website, Ms Adetshina was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a Mozambique mother and is now a naturalised South African.

For me I believe that Chidinma’s story is way beyond her. C’mon! With years of xenophobic attacks in SA on foreigners of which Nigerians were once victims, it was expedient that in Chidinma’s case, Nigeria could not afford to keep mute.
Chidinma is a treasure whether you agree or not. The idea of her competing next year sounds morally upright but not a strategic move for Nigeria that definitely has to make a statement. Within a spade of one year, anything could happen to Chidinma. She could have been recalled by SA for whatever reason or Mozambique could also go for her.
In determining if Chidinma actually qualifies to represent Nigeria at this time, I would say time and time again YES! And why because her selection as a finalist in SA was not on a platter of gold, she worked for it and met with all the conditions. So what changed? Because her qualification was not in Nigeria? If the Nigerian organisers are to defend Chidinma’s selection, this is a strong argument for heaven sake!
Finally, as one of the presenters said, Chidinma contesting in Miss Universe Nigeria is not going to be a walk in the park. As a matter of fact, she’s going to work as twice as much to be able to compete favourably with the Nigerian contestants, so what is the whole fuss all about ?
