Man, Eric Gale was one hell of a session musician. He must have played guest guitarist on over 100 songs in his career. Back when albums had covers and liner notes, I would always check out who the musicians were and Eric's name came up more than anyone elses. He could play any style of music, a true artist. RIP in Axe heaven!
I probably most enjoyed Eric when he was in session with Earl Klugh, Bob James, and Grover Washington Jr. I could always hear him strumming and playing rithym in the background. Of course I have 2 copies of his music as well. RIP
I was hooked when I heard his solo on Angela by Bob James. For a jazz guy, he keeps it pretty pentatonic and simple, but he puts so much emotion and nuance into it, and that’s where the magic is
Back in 1975 i discovered Eric Gale through his unbelievable solo on Grover Washingtons "Mr.Magic" I was hooked on his sound as well as Cornell Dupree. Eric is so identifiable on the thousands of recordings he's done as a session man. Thank you for this wonderful film.
After hearing Eric's style for the first time way back.....I would often run to the music store and ask for anything by him that I didn't have already.....he was top of my charts back then.....and just listen to the sound he creates.....a thing of real beauty....one of my all time favs !!!
His music always makes me feel good. He was such a great player. Great lead player but also what a rhythm player. Countless songs were made by his work establishing an infectious groove that made you tap your feet and want to dance.
He did one of his last CDs with bass player Ron Carter called "In A Jazz Tradition" and his playing on that one is combination of Joe Pass & BB King. Very fast and complicated bebop. Gale incorporated many styles.
Being myself a sax player, I have Eric playing on a lot of Tom Scott albums. There is one song, in particular, on the Intimate Strangers album called “Lost inside the love of you“ where he solos on electric guitar but he mikes the guitar and plays it acoustically. Beautiful sound. Eric also played bass with Aretha Franklin!

His vibrato technique is unmistakable. Such a distinct sound he had.
Love this track - Gale no 1 for me
His jazz blues playing is one the best! Shines in this and stuff the band.. his concert with Bb king live is legendary stuff! No pun intended 😊
If you are lucky enough to know about Eric Gale... keep it between us. He's one of the greatest unknown guitar gods out there

I loved Eric's guitar playing. He also played some fine bass in the studio for Ashford and Simpson.

Noticed how still Eric is whilst playing, this is a very good tip for all guitarists, keeps you in the zone.
He doesn't need to dance around cause his sound is so damned good.

No car crash, Eric passed after a battle with lung cancer in 1994. He was 55.
