  • Hi all,
    We've finally installed the double gates I made 3 weeks ago down my Dad's woodyard. We fixed them between a concrete post and brick wall of our house.
    Here's how I made it them if you missed it:: • DIY Double Gate at Dad...
    I was particularly nervous about fixing it to a concrete post due to the metal inside.
    I found absolutely no RUclips video on how to do it or web page. So after asking my Dad if it were possible, I followed his instructions counties apart and thought I'd share to help others.
    Please note I am not an expert and my Dad did not supervise, so there may very well be something he would do differently. I'm just a girl giving things a go to learn and save money.
    Here's what I used.

    Great project and expertly done , you have a natural talent. It's all about having the courage to take something on, risking that it might go horribly wrong, which it does sometimes of course, but the confidence gained and satisfaction gives a nice buzz. Yes, get an impact driver...

      Thanks +Chris Laudan. I agree, each job I try has given me more confidence to give something else a go. And if I'm not happy with something, I just try again :) Will definitely consider a impact driver 😉

    well done. You just hit the nail on the head as I was worried of drilling thru the concrete because of the iron rod inside. I shall try my luck tomorrow. Many thanks indeed. You have good common sense.

    Great work. A handy tip is to set the centre of the gates slightly high to allow the gates to settle as they inevitably will. Adjustable band and gudgeon hinges would also allow for easy adjustment in years to come. Love the video though

    We'll done young lady.
    Re: Thickness = diameter. for any screw, pipe or drill bits.
    Spade bits or frostner bits for large holes in timber.
    Have a look on eBay for used quality joiners tools, such as wood brace type drill and also the wood augers to suit, I've bought quite a few and done them up by sanding the handles back to bare wood, to then varnish with matt type water based stuff, stainless pan succourers work well for cleaning the metal parts, even when some of the chrome has worn off, light oil then they're good to go.
    Used wood augers soon clean up, quick light sharpen and a new tool roll to keep them in.
    No battery's needed and 9 times out of 10 they make holes quicker than battery drills.
    Used chisels are cheap on eBay as well, and sharpen up after a regrind, all of which you can learn how to do on here.
    Hope this helps and well done for having a go, ps. Get a good work jacket and or joiners apron to keep clean and have pockets to place tools and pencils in.
    Really nice to see young women having a go at hand trades & as a man I really want to see balanced work forces now, as good equipment means women can do exactly the same as guys.
    Ps: I'm a retired / out of work heavy plant fitter.

    Little "trick" when it comes to using a drill to screw in a screw.
    Set it to speed 1 on the top instead of speed 2. that way it uses the torc from the machine to "slowly" screw it in. This way you wont break the screw nor ruin the head of it.
    Speed 1 is ment for screwing while speed 2 is mainly ment for drilling.

    A great end result! The only improvement I can see is to turn the top hinges upside down so the gates can't be lifted up off the hinges. Not so important, just a positive observation. Well done 😀

    • @droses1600
      @droses1600 6 лет назад +2

      Yeah, I hadn't spotted this myself, but have to agree wholeheartedly with Geoffrey Smith on this one. It's just too easy for a ne'er-do-well to lift it all off, thus negating all your hard work and planning. Also concur with the other commenter about the second bracket on the top drop bolt.

    • @mariataif
      @mariataif 6 лет назад +1

      Yes great job again AAA****
      Vicky Mr Geoffrey Smith beat me to that tip of turning top hinges upside down for extra security
      best wishes Mike

    • @Mark...
      @Mark... 6 лет назад +4

      You could also just add a hinge to the middle to save you taking the gates off to turn the other hinge around, this way way it saves the bottom hinge from taking all the weight of the gate and also can be done in situ.

    • @maingun07
      @maingun07 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I saw that too and my initial reaction was the same, but I doubt it would be a problem. If someone wanted in, it would be easier and faster to just break the lock. My grandpa always said that a lock is only there to keep an honest man honest.
      Besides, there may be some situation in the future that she needs to temporarily remove the gate and those hinges makes that easy. Plus, as Captainkidd2006 said, it spreads the downward load force over the bearing surface of two hinge pins instead of the whole weight of the gate on just one.

  • @mariataif
    @mariataif 6 лет назад +1

    Great job on Hanging those gates Vicky
    Only thing I would have done is to turn top hinges upside down so A no one can steal them and B a bit more secure to stop them being lifted so someone can get in down your drive!!!!
    all the best Mike

    Like the way you left the price tag on the head torch.
    It is a nice extra project and with some anti rattling benefits to make a stout wooden draw bolt rather than the conventional metal ones. You also get to imaging you are securing some medieval town gate each evening....... or that might be just me watching too much Robin of Sherwood.

    Great videos, Iam in the trade and I can say you would put a lot of tradesman to shame with you skill and determination. One thing I would recommend is an impact driver, you will never look at your drill the same way again for putting in screws and would have been great for those fixings you used on the concrete posts.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  6 лет назад

      Thank you +CaptainKidd2006 :) yes, I think it's probably about time too for an impact driver. I don't think this screwdriver is as good as my old one.
      I used my Dad's Stanley Fatmax when making the gate and although not an impact driver, it pretty much laughed in the face of this one!

    Don't know if it's been mentioned, but you should turn your top hinges upside down or add a third hinge or maybe a bit of weld to the top hinge, to prevent the gates just being lifted off and making your excellent work all for nothing. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the video, well done.

    Awesome Vikki!! Excellent job!!! And kudos to your boyfriend for not being afraid to let his fiancée handle all the DIY jobs. Hope you have a chance to check out Alyssa on the 'Pure Living for Life' YT channel (they're building a timber framed house in Idaho) at the link that I mentioned before. She really is a girl after your own heart: not afraid of learning new skills, hard-working, dedicated and works well into the night after the sun goes down whatever the weather conditions. But I've never seen her doing any dances.... Maybe that can be your signature on all your future videos - a little Easter egg at the end, with you "getting on down" to the music.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  6 лет назад

      Thank you so much! :) He doesn't like DIY and I like to give things a go, so only get help when I need it. He'd much rather hire someone in to get things done fast, but when we've had quotes, we've both been shocked. So it's no a running theme where he sets me on a mission to try and save us money while he's at work and I much prefer it (and he tidies up after me) lol.
      I'm now a subscriber of Pure Living for Life and funnily enough, they currently come top on my channel's homepage for Related Channels, followed by April Wilkerson :) And I'll think about the signature dance.... need some practice 😆

    • @droses1600
      @droses1600 6 лет назад

      Regarding PLFL, you'll be aware that they're using freshly felled timber (Douglas Fir) to make a timber-framed house. In your vids, you're obviously using shop-bought kiln-dried wood for this and all your other projects, so I just wondered what your dad (professional/experienced carpenter that he is) thinks about making a huge rafters and roof assembly (36 x 36 yards I think) out of "wet" wood and what will happen to it as it dries out unevenly over the next few years. For Jesse and Alyssa's sake, I hope it doesn't warp and twist badly out of shape in the cold winter/hot summer Idaho climate. PS A big 'woof' to Hans!!

    Nice job. Just an observation - I reckon you've got a bracket missing from that drop bolt. You should have two pass-through brackets as well as the bottom stop. That would stop it wobbling around the way you show it doing.

    Another nice job Vikkie. Just wondering why the gates were so far off the ground. My first thought was the dog will get underneath them (our dog certainly would!). Or worse still, a skinny burglar might crawl under! Unless you are planning to raise the level of the driveway a bit??

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  6 лет назад

      Yes, we're raising the level of the drive with a 50mm layer of gravel any time soon :) I wanted to wait to until it was all down and then fit the gate, but our wrought iron gate hasn't been secure since our fencing video as we had to take out the left door got as it got in the way of the concrete gravel boards.
      Thankfully Hans can't get underneath that I've seen, but he's been peeking!

    The English weather is unforgiving. It will wrot your beautiful gates very quickly. Unfortunately I noticed you used untreated wood for your outdoor gates. To slow it down take the gates off and seal the ends of the lumber with multiple coats of stain until the wood wont accept any more. that way you'll at least slow down the water ingress into the untreated wood. the other way it will enter is through the vertical wood joints. might I suggest next time sealing all the parts/ stain every surface "prior" to assembly. longer process I know but well worth the effort to completely seal out the elements. well done they look great.
