Sonic The Hedgehog lags in every way. It is supposedly based on the Sega game series, though in this video, NitPix will argue that it takes more from Hop, The Smurfs, Alvin and the Chickmunks, Woody Woodpecker, Yogi Bear and coming to a cinema near you - Tom and Jerry. We've coined the term the 'CGI Buddy Film'.
The film stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz. It is a Sony production, working with Original Film - who we've criticised in the past (Goosebumps). It is a family film that lacks any of the concepts put forward in the game series. There's no Chaos Emeralds, Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Sonic characters. We will be getting Tails in the sequel, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 but it will be unlikely to feature Knuckles or Rouge The Bat.
We know video game movies are bad, but with the success of Detective Pikachu and Lego Movie, there was a vague hope that Hollywood would adapt our beloved franchise with the respect they deserve. Sit back and enjoy.

@@markparkinson6947 Despite cuties, cuties isn't bad. Yeah I agree. It's just that it's unforgivable the movie got any support at all, by the point where they were sexualizing actual child actors. I personally don't think the director wanted to make glorified cp, but she did, and that's worrying.
@@radiofloyd2359 It was more of a critique of child sexualization than anything else, but I can definitely see the irony of the film in that regard.

The worst film of 2020? I dunno about that. Even if the film is a safe typical "live action adaption" it's still a well made movie imo. Has a decent character arc, characters and action. So it's definitely not terrible. But yeah, it is made for an audience who isn't super into Sonic. So it's an introduction, Robotnik vs Sonic, like the first game, but I hope the next film is a bit more ambitious. Sonic being in a human like world isn't even unknown or alien to the Sonic franchise.
But I think it's a good movie.

@@larrycress6045 Yes, and my opinion is that he is wrong.
@@larrycress6045 I never said it wasnt?
Thing is, Classic Sonic has Angel Island while Modern Sonic has the Big City. What this movie did was establish both settings, with Tails establishing that you can travel between them.
I never believed Green Hill Zone and the cities from Sonic Adventure could exist in the same universe as eachother, so this movie found a way that legit feels more natural.
That, and I love how Eggman starts as Robotnik and then becomes Eggman when Sonic breaks his mind. It's the perfect explanation for his name and his obsession with killing Sonic - super genius who never loses a fight gets beaten by cartoon alien and is banished, having his ego and perception shattered, and becomes obsessed with killing said alien. It's perfect.
Everyone's complaining about this review that there's worse movies, honestly I'm just happy to see a video essay not about Mulan or Artemis Foul.
yeah they may suck more but im sort of sick of seeing people dogpile on a movie we know is bad.

The Sonic Movie was my favorite film of this year. And I thoroughly agree with this video.

@@2XocraM its sets a precedent, and will/has emboldened vocal minorities to become even more vocal and hostile towards creators. I've seen at least 3 films this year be attacked(and people encouraging attacks against them) based on the logic of "well it worked with Sonic".

I wouldn’t call Cuties a bad film, although the sexualisation of children definitely dragged it down heavily. It was so awkward and cringe to watch.
@@markparkinson6947 everything you just said about it describes it as a bad film. Dude, don't lie to yourself. Cuties is terrible.
@@jaihdendover4282 The children dancing in a provocative manner does not inherently make the film bad. There is context and meaning regarding these thing within the story of Cuties, as well as other aspects of the story that makes it more engaging.
@Alex JG No, it just makes the film immoral, not bad. Just because a film does an immoral thing does not mean it’s a bad film.
@Alex JG Because the entire point of the film was the exact opposite of its promotion, which is especially apparent when you understand the character arc of Amy.
There's a difference between safe, and bad.
You could say the safest movie of 2020...
But the worst? That's a big stretch.
Arguably safe is the worst thing a movie can be; I'd rather watch a worse movie over a boring one, if that makes sense.
@@HOTD108_ Boring and safe are very different from each other. Safe is when a movie does something formulaic by movie standards. That doesn't mean it lacks enjoyment, it's just using a formula that is simple and has been done multiple times. Boring is when something lacks enjoyment. You can be safe and boring if that's what you're saying, but personally I'd rather watch the Sonic Movie ten times before I watch Mulan and Artemis Fowl again.
Safe is bad. Everything is safe, everything is a copy of a different movie that has made money previously, it's why all movies are now trash that come from the west. They focus on a formula and pander with garbage propaganda forgetting creativity as a whole.
Personally safe is really boring.
Right on the money, my guy. As a big Sonic fan myself, I not only hated how uninspired this movie was, but was disappointed in just how much its mediocrity was accepted by typical moviegoers and other Sonic fans alike.
How do you feel about the sequel?
its a great film. cope
Hey so about the bomb on the glove thing guess what: the original sonic movie design that everyone hated? He originally had NO gloves on so they couldn't do anything about the animation since they had to remodel him hence why he didn't take the gloves off
Oh yeah I forgot about that lol
honestly it's kinda... cute, that way? Like it makes it feel like this cartoon character has gloves so fused with him that the idea of taking them off for a bomb is out the table.
Outraged. It was a masterpiece akin to the Mona Lisa.
But Mulan 2020 exists.
That Sonic title card at 7:49 is a perfect design! Using Miles’ Tail as a formation of the number two is unironically a stroke of genius. I wouldn’t be surprised if they used this in the actual marketing and title sequence of the film.
12:27 Sonic couldn’t take his glove off, because the original design didn’t have any gloves on him, and the animators had to stick (no pun intended) with what they were given.
The question is why should he?
Why does *EVERY* B-tier movie have some “Oh I need to get this promotion/job” plot? Where is the master copy that all these movies steal from?
"Johnny didn't get his promotion. And he got really drunk and hit me last night."
Look Mulan (2020) exists.
Sonic may not be a piece of art, but it is still good. Something can be cliched but still good. Not everything has to be new and different.

I actually haven’t seen the live action Mulan
(edit: sorry for the long post but I really had a lot I wanted to say about this but if you don't care that much there's a short roundup at the bottom, I thank you for your time :) )
I'm sorry but after agreeing with a lot of your takes I have to heavily disagree with this one. With Sonic being my favourite media franchise of all time I was heavily dissapointed with the original design and thrilled that it was changed. Regardless of that fact I can confidently say that the Sonic movie is an above average young audience aimed film with plenty of references and really good performances from Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey and easily one of the best if not the best video game adapted movie (kind of in a contest with Mortal Kombat). Jim Carrey's performance was probably the best part especially since he's not done his trademark batshit maneurisms for a while now which then shows how excited he was about the role in the behind the scenes and press shows (not just because marketing but also cause it's a role that allows him to give such a performance again). On the point of him not being threatening I also have to disagree, in the past 15 years of the games Eggman has barely been an actual menacing threat and has been mostly just portrayed as an 'intelligent' goofball who keeps messing up and inevitably loses, in this film he's goofy and eccentric but not stupid and actually is able to exude a lot of dominance and danger in their encounters and get's very close to killing the good guys multiple times. Sonic's personality is different from the games and the movie does show this by him basically growing up completely by himself on Earth in combination with him being an emotional teen. That fact + his loneliness comes to a big point at the baseball stadium where his emotions fully come out and he let's loose the big electrical burst, this is something the movie shows and is explained. Also the running theme of the movie is (while incredibly cheesy I'll admit) friendship vs isolation with Sonic looking for friendship and receiving that in the form of Tom who is looking to prove himself as more than just a small town cop, finding that in protecting this 'alien' who's powers could destroy the world VS Robotnik's isolationist mindset that is hinted at through many lines of dialogue throughout the movie and while friendship is probably one of the most unoriginal kids movie themes of all time this movie executes it much better than most films of this genre while that doesn't automatically make it amazing or revolutionary it does make it stand out. Also want to comment on Robotnik's relationship with agent Stone who's a sort of Snively from the original animated series or from the more recent games Orbot & Cubot stand-in, and their dynamic was very entertaining. Finally the hard truth that we fans have to accept is that having a fullblown Sonic movie right out of the gate is almost impossible to be succesful and would have no potential to become a franchise. The fans would show up and be happy but they are not enough to make the movie succesful, there has to be a middleground with the 'casual' audience which usually means safe Hollywood stuff but that's why Iike this movie because it takes a lot of the generic stuff that you see from these movies and executes it much better. The MCU started out with a safe, basic plot and gradually developed into the batshit crazy, magic sorcerer and epic space battle filled franchise we know today and don't get me wrong the Sonic movie is knowhere as good as the first Iron Man but that is a sad thing that we have to accept if we ever want to have the crazy big casted adventures of the games (although the game writing has been very lacking the past 10-15 years).
I know this crazy long post might give off the vibe that I'm a crazy loyal fanboy who will not allow anyone to criticize the franchises I love but I promise you that's not true, the past 5 years I've grown to be very critical of the franchises I love and the media I consume and channels like yourself (especially the Disney and Pixar related content which has helped open my eyes incredibly and I thank you so much for that) have helped me with that. I've been very critical of Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Plants vs Zombies, Star Wars, Marvel, DC and who knows how many other franchises that I'm a fan of cause I care, cause that's what fans do, point out the flaws and criticize in the hope that things will improve and that's why I'm very excited for the sequel. This movie was an above average, safe but pretty fun and entertaining movie that we had to go through in order to establish Sonic's world more into the mainstream movie audience and now that we have this established we can continue with it and start to introduce more of the admittedly pretty crazy lore like time travel and moon exploding space colonies or even just simply the colourful cast of characters that we know and love. I'd rather have them take things slow and get the audience acquainted piece by piece then doing a DCEU or Dark Universe and rushing everything at once. Don't know if you or anyone is actually gonna read this long ass post but...yeah just wanted to share this...uh I guess I have to end this with something funny or something...WhErE's ThAt DAMN FoUrTh ChAoS eMeRaLd?!

To be fair, if the internet as a whole hadn't bullied them into changing the atrocious Sonic design, it could have been the worst film of 2019. We did that. For that reason alone, I can't call this movie the worst film of 2020 because it's a resulting product of our own hubris. Also, disney has done much worse this year.
That's a big no tho, the movie is bad for writting over all and the second time the internet will riot for another poorly designed character will be either intentional on studio's part for attention or not gonna garner attention for a change. Even as a bread movie, the story feels forced. The emotional beats that lead Tom to adopting Sonic only exist to make the plot cohesive. It never felt like anything that was supposed to be emotional ever landed, it was only ever just "there." The story is just as hollow as it's dedication to it's source material.
yeah honestly I was a massive sonic fan in my youth, I'm older now but I had no interest in seeing this movie when I realised it was set in some small American town with some buddy-cop guy. Like this video said it could be any generic buddy CGI movie, just swap sonic out with a cutsie mouse or something. Nothing really to do with sonic at all.
I'd have watched it 100% if it was set on Mobius but again, maybe that might be too "wierd" for the average American prole.
cope harder loser. cant wait for sonic 3
i would put mulan up there... even if this movie was a low risk kids movie... it was the start of franchise, and they didnt wanna fuck it up like every other video game movie. definitely not the worst.

@Cartoon Judge! C.G. i dunno if its a new mic or an editing error. but the audio quality is defiantly ass
The sad thing is that, for the most part, this entire video is valid and understandable.
Its only because of the title that you'll get a pretty awful dislike ratio.
That’s probably why he changed the title
Imagine If in the movie Sonic runs so fast that he enter the speed force and he meets CW Flash for a cameo appearance with him being shocked and he used the ring to get out and continue on with his business
Another thing to point out is that if people are saying that a highpoint of this film was that it wasn't "political", that not only shows a lot of nerd culture doesn't really view the stuff they really like too seriously, it, ironically, shows they didn't get Sonic down as much as people like to claim they did. The original Sonic had an overt environmentalist message with Sonic taking down local futuristic technological strongholds and leaders to protect the local wildlife and his friends. Protecting the environment in general was a big message for multiple franchises aimed at kids in the 90's. If they had really shown us what Sonic is at his truest core, there would have been tons of outcries from people saying they made him a leftist eco-terrorist.
I'm thoroughly convinced that changing his design was the only thing that made people think they "understood the fans" or "got it" in the end. Sonic isn't just the main protag from Hop who happens to have Sonic powers and live in the Sonic world. Robotnik isn't just the Mask with a mustache and a bunch of gadgets. As said before, saying "they needed to hold back for the sequel and introduce everybody" is a null argument when you remember stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy exists. If Marvel could introduce everybody and make so many get onboard with a talking raccoon and talking tree in space fighting warlords right out of the gate and make them fans of stuff like that regarding a comic barely anybody read, why couldn't Paramount just do the same thing for a video game franchise way more were already familiar with? Hell, we even got the Lupin III 3D movie the same year as this thing and they didn't have to hold back. Critics and audiences who were right there who never even opened a Lupin manga or saw a single episode of the anime really liked it.

All of those movies are better than The Sonic Movie, which a vast majority of people like for similar reasons?
EDIT: So I see that NitPix changed the title of the video, thus making my comment not make as much sense, but my point still stands. Even if we only go be theatrical releases, Birds of Prey came out at the same time and it’s so much worse that the Sonic Movie
yeah im with you, just unsubbed. felt very emotionally drivin, like he hated this because he personally didn't like how little sonic lore there was or soemthing.
While it's not the best movie, far from it, it was good enough that Birds of Prey fans tried to make it look bad in a desperate attempt to get people to watch Birds of Prey. Also, I have high respect for the creators of the Sonic movie, because they took criticism and personally thanked the people in the movie theatre for watching their movie. That takes integrity and shows that they made a movie that THEY wanted to make, not driven by money.
No way you think Birds of Prey is worse than the Sonic Movie 😭😭😭
Sonic movie was fucking trash, about on par with birds of pray, you just like sonic more than the subject matter of harley quinn and so on, but the movies were both terrible.
Stop defending a trash movie just because other movies are also trash lol, if your only argument is "what about this film" then the sonic movie still sucks
That like/dislike ratio is tasty. Medicore movie? Sure. Worst movie of 2020? Hell no.
My issue with the Sonic movie is that they market it as a "Sonic Movie". It's just a "human movie" that incidentally has Sonic in it.
The movie feels more like a Robotnik Origin Movie than a Sonic Movie.
But still. I had fun watching it.
Finally. Good to see you back!
wow people really are mad about a hyperbole title that isnt even the title anymore
newton Well, when movies like Mulan (2019), Doolittle, Birds of Prey and Cuties came out this year, you can’t really say that a mediocre video game movie is the worst one.
I genuinely felt like i was taking crazy pills when everyone talked about how good this movie was. The best way I described it was "Maliciously Generic" and i think that fits it pretty well. Remember when sonic and (average human lead who's name i don't remember) have a fight, not because there was any real tension but because they reached the point in the script where they are supposed to have a breakup in a buddy cop movie so they did?

Lol wow all those movies really looked the exact same. 😂😂
Yeah...judge a movie by each having one shot that looks the same....most of the movies shown only have a single scene in a car-I know because I was a kid who saw most of them-seeing Sonic as an adult in the theater-it’s not the best movie ever-but it’s better than most of the family movies that have similar ideas and concepts
@@CurtyTails when did I say they’re substantively the exact same? I said the LOOKED the exact same. Meaning visually and stylistically.
@@greatstate58 even in terms of looks-based on a single shot that always looks similar even though every shot of 2 characters in a car looks the same-sonic is at least shot better-it doesnt have david fincher quality shots or anything but the other films are way more basic in terms of shot structure-particularly the action sequences. The movie is shot in a simple way but thankfully not so basic like the films its being compared to-i mean hell even Christopher nolan understands the simplest camera shots and editing can tell a story wrll without needing crazy shit-a simple shot reverse shot say in a scene where characters are talking at a table and when it gets more personal they have the camera zoom in or cut to a more close up shot to show the characters being more intimate.
A film being shot in a simple way isnt bad in any and comparing sonic to other films where they just left the camera still and zoomed in for more close up shots while the sonic film has shots where they actually shot close upd when they needed to-not cutting corners even if they could get away with it. Trust me lazy films like yogi bear and alvin and the chipmunks and hop-you can tell where they cut corners even with simple shots that wouldnt take hardly any work while with sonic they have the camera moving or they actually move the camera to film a different shot genuinely.
Its the little details you have to look for-on the surface they can seem similar but give it a moment to process and then its realized they didnt cheap out on things they could have and that needs to be commended.
I mean these are these are the same people who actually paid for new animation work to be done and held off making the money back at the box office to get it right which is rare for a big box office production to do except with physical reshoots but thats different from redoing an entire character design.
Legit the thing about why they didnt take too many risks or go crazy with lore from the games is cause they wanted to keep things simple to understand for new audiences-much like iron man and the MCU...it seems in Sonic 2 they will take more risks and introduce more stuff from the games now people are hooked-if thats the case it would have taken only one film to warm people up rather than like with the MCU where it took till guardians of the galaxy for Marvel to realize they could take risks with being weirder.
Plus with video game movies being a failure (detective pikachu was being made around the same so they had no clue how the turnout would be during pre production)-paramount gave only so much money to work with so they had to use it wisely-now they can get a bigger budget and get more creative juices flowing.
I've never been so happy to see an upload from a creator. It's good to see you
trash
When I once commented online saying essentially what you said in this review on how it was Hop but with Sonic, some of the defenses included "They needed to do this so they could hook everybody on real Sonic so they'll do that in the sequel." To which I am VERY skeptical of to say the least. There are so many adaptations that, right out of the gate which introduced newcomers to the weirdness, zaniness, and odd elements of their franchise, and they still hit it home. Not only were they more faithful to their source material, but more importantly, they were far more interesting and gave so many a good idea of why people became fans of them to begin with.
James Gunn went balls to the wall and gave us a galaxy where a talking raccoon and a talking tree became superheroes fighting warlords in space, and that was one of the best films of its year. And he went even further in the sequel. Or just look at some of recent stuff released for children. The reboots of She-Ra and Carmen Sandiego, there are so many franchises that have zany, out-there, and weird worlds. Yet the people making them learned how to make good stories WITHOUT robbing the IP's of their identity and what made them special to begin with. They didn't morph them into something so dull or remake a generic movie already made a decade ago and put characters from the franchise in it and called it a day.
To put it in another way, imagine if they announced a Carmen Sandiego movie. But INSTEAD of taking risks and introducing newcomers to who Carmen is, they instead put her into another movie like Hop. Instead of seeing, a CARMEN SANDIEGO movie (Indiana Jones with some elements of James Bond, and Kim Possible mixed in with a detective thriller) they write a lazy movie where she crossed over from the video game world to the real world and she has to learn the power of friendship or some generic stuff with a regular everyday white collar man. You'd probably feel a bit cheated, and so would so many. "Oh, they had to introduce people to Carmen first!" probably wouldn't be enough of an excuse.
It's like what Jim Sterling said. If you PURCHASE the rights to make an adaptation of a property, does that NOT indicate you have faith in that property to begin with? Why strip so much of that property and WHY people became fans of it in favor of something so boring and uninteresting?
"a bad year for everyone" i see you haven't heard of billionaires, society's true parasites
How did I not find this video! I completely agree.
"robotnik doesn't feel threatening"
Besides satam/Archie has he ever?
Cant fucking believe you’re back Bois!
Sonic not being sonic is dumb. I mean corporate meddling created this interpretation of sonic. Sega needs to let the characters grow.
You know what I like? I like when people who actually know and understand film make me realize how easily I’m pleased and what a casual I am.. of the filthy variety.
he doesnt know anything
Nitpix changed title expeditiously
How can you say something so controversial yet so brave
Thanks for the Vulf in the back ;]
Artemis Fowl?
Cuties?
Mulan?
I wouldn’t call Cuties a bad film. Sexualisation was awful, but that doesn’t make it automatically bad.
Mulan and Artemis Fowl are bad, regardless.
I’ve seen a lot of movies in my life and The Sonic movie is not just inoffensively digestible for adult audiences as it’s inconsequentially a movie for children.
I’m not sure The Sonic Movie really qualifies as “The Worst Movie” as it’s just a video game movie for children. But I guess this video was easy to make so good for you.
children movies need to be good too, yes kids will watch anything but it does shape how they view the world
@@mouwersor
then children can do a lot worse than the Sonic Hedgehog Movie. Kids are good at identifying what’s bad and good to them but it’s not up to adults to tell them what’s bad or good.
Have you tried making a kid watch “Citizen Kane”? It’s impossible lol
Ya back!!
You completely nailed it! It felt like I was the only one who hated this film. As a long time Sonic fan I was very disappointed with this movie. It feels like they were too embarrassed to be an actual Sonic movie, so they just gave us Hop instead.
Right? I have no idea what people see in this movie.
@@horaciosi its a good film
Casper came out in 1995 had fully CGI characters interacting with live action. That was 4 years before Stuart Little did it.
God I don't even want to think about what the original design for tails was before they fixed it. That must of been an horrific image not ready for any human eyes....
Tails wasn't in the original cut! While the redesign process, Jeff Fowler asked Tyson hesse to design tails and the echidnas for the movie! You can tell Jeff tried to think of everything after the backlash!
nah Sonic was actually pretty good lol and not as bad as I thought.
My biggest disappointment is that Puma actually made Sonic's shoes but won't sell them to the public.
I liked this video good job
This was one of my favourite movies of the year.. And I'm 33
YOUR FANTASIES CAN NEVER BE QUENCHED, CAN THEY? YOU FRICKING FRICK!!!!

The Sonic movie is not a movie you can critique the way one critiques actual cinema. And no, not because "it's a kid's movie", or "it's a cash-grab" (...of course it is). But because this movie was doomed to fail from the get-go.
Hollywood loves their terrible, CGI-live-action adaptions. This movie was always going to be crappy, because they wanted, nay, NEEDED to make it live-action, so as to not spend millions and millions more than necessary, making it entirely CGI. It was always going to be an Alvin the the Chipmunks movie, and Sonic fans were bracing themselves for the landfill-fire. Sonic fans were hostages in this situation, waiting for the axe to drop.
The fact that this movie ended up being FINE...is a miracle. To focus on the bad aspects of this movie, is the same thing as focusing on every, terrible news article out there, and saying "this world sucks"... completely ignoring the good, because sensationalism, and the act of tearing something down, is more exciting than acknowledging that some light can peek through the fog.
This movie was NOT supposed to be good. Ever. ...And yet, it ended up being good. It's a FINE Sonic movie, relative to EVERY cgi animal in film history, and every video game movie thus-far. And there is nothing wrong with grading a movie relative to others of its ilk. It was a low hurdle, and Sonic flew over it.
Go after higher-hanging fruit. And get a better microphone.
5:58 to be fair the sonic comics had portal rings in them, so its not entirely new for the franchise to use ring likes this.
All the movie needed was a globally devastating pandemic for it to make bank, woo
Excuse me sir, but this movie was actually really good.
It was alright I wouldn't call it bad.
I don’t think it was bad. Far from ‘the worst movie of 2020’. That being said, it’s a video game movie, and by no measure, is it good. But that’s just my opinion, think what you want
yes if your nine years old.The plot is very simple and one note with no complex characters and no real stakes making the movie feel empty. This is opinionated but the movie isnt very funny with typical family comedy movie comedy and the over use of cgi makes the action feel hollow. You happy now sonic the wear hog
It was pretty mediocre tbh
no it wasnt, however it is still better than Birds of Prey
14:33 "And that's why it's my least favorite film of 2020."
What? No! The title says "worst"! "Least favorite" and "worst" are different things, you know!
It's almost as if he wanted to clickbait people
Thank you for this. I’m so tired of people pretending this movie was good.
it is great. one loser isnt gonna change THAT
@@reggielacey2235I’m here years later and the movie still holds up.
I agree. I'm no Sonic superfan but there's literally a whole world to draw from but they had to go and make it generic
not a fan. opinion disregarded
@@reggielacey2235 gatekeep moment, yass queen
I come from the future. The sequel still has that stupid Hop stuff that bogs it down a good bit but MAN, does it have the actual energy of the video games when it decides to focus on the stuff that's actually interesting.
Honestly, Sonic is wrong about Longclaw. She's way more like Qui Gon Jinn.
11:33 the thing that the most disturb me is that the animation if sonic barely stepped up from the animation of this movie. Its mainly because the artists were treated like trash. Showing perfectly how much "thought" and "care" the film makers put into the movie.
ok cool .dont care
Missed you pal.
damn great channel
Sonic the Hedgehog was my favorite film of 2020
