Seriously Ben Affleck, I actually like you. I just really hate Live By Night. I'm sorry for calling you a bad writer, actor and director. But Good Will Hunting is dated now, Gone Baby Gone is bland and you're a terrible Batman in Justice League. You will always have Argo, but you'll also always carry Daredevil with you.

i thought Ben Affleck was broken by Justice League flopping, maybe BvS flopping, a project he cared about, Live by Night flopping, a project he had faith in and Justice League flopping in the span of 2/3 years all took a really big toll on him, the man must've felt really bad after seeing each of the projects in the recent years he cared about bombing either with critics, fans or at the box office. And the fact that every journalist keeps bringing up Batman to him doesn't help. Also, the divorce, and separation from Garner, i mean the guy cares about his kids and i guess he doesn't want them to go through Hollywood separations.

    • @GigawingsVideo

I think the divorce was the one who broke the camel's back. I believe Ben is genuinely a good guy but he's a bit narcissistic. From his roles I can see he's the romantic type who think the good guy will win everything and get the girl. Sadly he gets the girl but ended up losing her.

Its kind of patronizing when all people want to talk about is a project you don't want to work on, or be associated with. Batman is an icon but he's not represented well in BvS. Neither is superman for that matter but Cavil can take that with grace because he still has more going for him. Affleck is only recognizable as Batman and for an "artist" that sucks. Narration works when the narrator has a personality and uses language to complement the visuals. Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" is a superb example of this. The problem with "Live by Night" is that Joe 'I Can't Remember His Last Name' has no personality and no creativity with using language to reflect his worldview, his inner thoughts, or his goals in life. The result is dialogue that is just dry.

    • @jg1740

One of my favorite scenes in Casino is when Joe Pesci's sidekick starts narrating out of nowhere while Pesci is screwing around with Sharon Stone. It made sense because the character is otherwise pretty quiet but in this case its like he was witnessing something so fucked he just HAD to speak up. Scorcese is so good he can play around like that and make it work.

  • @Calcagno1988
    @Calcagno1988 5 лет назад +36

God, Road to Perdition is such an underrated gangster gem and that scene is just an excellent example.
There's even the additional subtext of the goon walking him through the establishment just being a chatterbox and even being a fan of Sullivan, which makes his death almost bittersweet.
In all likelihood, he was just another blue-collar guy like Sullivan who was just doing a normal day's work which adds to the theme of the film showing the sudden and abrupt danger that can destroy any sense of normalcy that they may have had. So even beyond the rising tension and concern about what's on the note, the film is creating an extra layer thematically.

My Hot Take: This film could have been great if it was about Elle Fanning's character instead. Think about it: an innocent, optimistic aspiring actress's career is destroyed when a gangster leaks nude photographs of her and kills her uncle. Her father discovers these photos and forces her to become a devout Christian. In an attempt at revenge and redemption, she becomes a preacher adored by the masses and encourages them to shut the gangster's businesses down. But still feeling hollow and believing she is beyond redemption, she takes her own life.
But no. We get 2 hours of man pain and Ben Affleck pouting.

Good review, but I miss the old Nitpix. The Nitpix who called me stupid for reasonable expectations I was presumed to have. Or the Nitpix who rubbed oil all over himself during an outro while staring into the depths my soul. But here we've got some kind of knock off who loves his community just because they like him back, support his existence, and help direct content. It's almost like this has become a parody of it's self called Dikpi- oh.
What I'm saying is that Nitpix was a lowlife who knew his audience was a bunch of stupids and was happy to explain that to them. However everyone knew the world could be a better a better place if they worked together... or Nitpix could make sudo rants at the stupids; I love one of those realities. What I'm trying to explain is that the regular content seems to have diluted the voice somewhat. Unfortunately when your oiled up on a massive platform trying to out screech other similar creators having a strong sense of self is what matters. Things are still good, but I have the sense the current Nitpix now would not casually hand off ownership because some people in the street had words with him.

The Town is a fun heist-type movie. It's one of those "oh you haven't seen it? it's not bad" type of movies. It's far, far away from best of the 21st century.

The Town, obviously, was heavily modeled off of "Heat", where Robert DeNiro, a hardcore criminal, had a love interest on the side that was unaware of his job-but she was never related to the crime.

Lol that baddie showdown in front of cars is pretty much straight from Boardwalk Empire when Nucky finally has to kill Tommy. But in BE it's actually done well.

At first I thought I hated this movie because I watched it during a layover and was angry at sitting around an airport, but now I know I hated it because it was just a terrible movie...

You are a proper up and comer in the movie and entertainment analyst scene on youtube! That was a mouthful but I feel like you bring up topics that are more obscure and very interesting.

You compared the film to Citizen Kane, for having the same man as the star, director, writer, the same could be said about The Room by Tommy Wiseau

Did Affleck watch Boardwalk Empire and think: "I can do this."?

I thought the Leo comparison was unfair. Though he does always play “intense” characters I wouldn’t call them the same.

please can we just clear up this misconception about acting. You don't PRETEND to play anybody. that's why he's bad because he is always pretending and the audience sees through it. Acting is all about connection with other actors and being emotionally open, this is the difference between the old school meryl streep, philip seymour, to most actors of today.

  • @UpRoaryus

Affleck's talents include directing and writing, but I am not sure that acting is really one of his strong points. Looking the part of "main handsome guy", okay, but his emotional range is not quite up to snuff when compared with say, Heath Ledger or any character actor. Suffering is not something he conveys well.
Edit (after getting further into the video): Nevermind. You nailed it. And kudos for the pairing of words in "excruciatingly drab" - that is going into my word bank for future use...

Hey I love your soundtrack, very deep cuts. Are these instrumentals from your personal collection of music? how do you come up with your soundtrack?
    Great video BTW.

Ben Affleck’s directing career is like that episode where homer is employed by globex cooperation and his only job is to tell people to work harder

No joke Ben plays himself in each movie he is in no matter the time period or situation his character is in. In Gone Girl, he plays an alcoholic who has been cheating on his wife. So inspiring.

So he (co)wrote four movies, won an Oscar for best screenplay.
He directed four movies, one of them won best picture.
And here are the Rotten Tomato Scores of the movie he wrote/directed:
    -Good Will Hunting (w) 97%
    -Gone Baby Gone (w&d) 94%
    -The Town (w&d) 93%
    -Argo (w&d) 96%
    -Live by Night (w&d) 35%
So this is the guy who you say can't make good movies huh?

The period detail of 1920's Boston and Tampa was fascinating. Would rather catch an interesting misfire like this on cable than another godawful Pitch Perfect or Star Wars sequel.

There's an almost great sequence in the extended, directors cut of The Town where Ben Affleck takes her on a date to a boat in the Boston Harbor, a boat he's never been on before and he's breaking onto and literally breaking the lock on the fridge to get some drinks (out of sight of her) and he tells her that it's his friend's boat.
The idea that he needs this kind of criminal activity and dishonesty to make even a basic date interesting (to himself at least) could have been an interesting reflective moment for him and an example of the drug-like addiction crime can be and show him how far he has to go before he can change (which he already wants to)... but instead it's just shown as a cool moment of being a badass on a date. Nice.

Your selection of these songs stripped of their vocals was incredibly pleasant. I was reminded of the great gatsby, my love for frank ocean & the appreciation that he has a song with jay and ye, and then Tyler pops up and shits on my face with a beautiful garden. I appreciate you.
