  • I’m okay if you don’t agree because we are fully committed to our dahlia obsession!! This blank patch of dirt will fill into an overflowing patch of flowers this summer. Follow along for all the fun as it grows in AND comment DAHLIAS to add some to your garden.
We have several gorgeous varieties available in our shop and can ship them to you! We’re in the PNW, growing zone 8-9, and we’re just now planting our tubers. In about 3 weeks this bed will be full of little dahlia shoots, and in about 8 weeks we’ll have our first blooms. They’ll bloom all the way until the first freeze, producing bucketfuls of blooms every week until then!
There is lots of debate on the best way to overwinter Dahlia tubers, how to store them, how to care for them, and here’s what we have found out. Everyone’s growing conditions are different, so we want to give you the best tips to help you decide what works best for you and your garden. Right now let’s just focus on planting the tuber, as we go through the season we will share all about how we stake, feed, cut and car for them as they’re growing and then also how to store and overwinter them.
If you are new to growing Dahlias, here are the most important growing tips:
    - plant in full sun (6+ hours otherwise direct sun)
    - plant the tuber with about 4 inches of soil covering it
    - add about a tablespoon of bonemeal to the planting hole to help feed the tuber as it gets started
    - don’t water your tuber once planted, wait until they have a third leaf set to begin watering
I have more tips for you on how to get them to bush out and produce twice as many flowers . But first we need to get the tuber planted! I’ll pop back in to show you what we’re doing next 👩🏼‍🌾🙌🏻
