Kind of surprised Lucario didn’t make this list. Considering it’s one of the more popular Gen 4 Pokémon and was based on Anubis from Egyptian Mythology.
@@magbanuamik_ I know. However, I’m just saying that considering that Lucario is one of the most popular Pokémon, you would think it would be on this list.
"So, Zygarde. Who from Norse Mythology do you want to be?" _"All of the above."_ "You can't do that-" _"I now take from you your power! In the name of my father and his father before, I, Zygarde, cast you out!_
Honorable Mentions: *Groudon, Kyogre and Rayquaza -Based on Behemoth, Leviathan and Quetzelcoatl respectively. *Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem -Based on the concept of Yin, Yang and Wuji. *Hydreigon -Based on Yamata-No-Orochi albeit with only 3 heads while it's inspiration has 8.
@@michaeladams5318 actually Rayquaza's design is probably based on the Chinese dragon and the Lindworm. Its role is similar to that of Ziz in Hebrew legends. Rayquaza matches the description of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, who was depicted as a flying serpent and created the boundary between the earth (including the oceans) and the sky. so a little bit of both
I think each culture has a similar mythological creature that could have inspired Rayquaza like Ninetails has multiple mythological sources from Japan, Hawaii and Finland
@Boruto Uzumaki "Pokemon, gotta catch em all! Its you and me, I know it's my destiny! Oh your my best friend, in a world we must defend! Pokemon, gotta catch em all!"
Dunsparce, my second-favorite Pokemon, is based on the Japanese cryptid, the tsuchinoko, a burrowing snake creature. I wasn't expecting it to make the list, but an honorable mention would have been nice.
I was really surprised when Dunspace wasn't a ground type, considering that origin... Also, was kind of disapointed when they didnt make Dranpa its evolution, as it makes sence..
@@pheonixfire9517 The whole Mega Evolution kind of irritates me. They mainly gave Mega Evolutions to popular Pokemon (with a few exceptions). If, instead, they had focused on unpopular or underused Pokemon, those Pokemon could have really gotten a chance to shine. Dunsparce is a perfect example of a Pokemon that could have really benefitted from a Mega Evolution.
First off, Infernape will always be my best friend, starting from Chimchar and everything. It’s cool to see he’s based on Sun Wukong (Son Goku), but now everyone else here has me more intrigued. The Namazu that inspired Whiscash indeed proves the roots to how Japan has so much seismic activity. Ninetales and the Kitsune that inspire it are so beautiful, and Ho Oh shines bright like a Phoenix. What I can’t understand is Shiftry being based on a Tengu, I thought Tengu were Sky creatures, which means any Pokémon based on such would be a Flying Type, which Shiftry is not.
Two things, Tengu don't "always" have wings and they are traditionally more associated with winds. They don't fly the same way birds do, they soar through the air closer to gliding than flying, using the gusts and air currents they make with their fans.
@@rubinivory-rodriguez3715 Yes it is. Actually, most Pokémon can be said to have both a species inspiration and a secondary inspiration. Lapras is definitely based on the Loch Ness Monster, but its species inspiration is the Plesiosaur, which many believed the LNM to be.
Ninetales and torterra and shiftery and darkrai and whiscash and frostlass and infernape and zygarde and ho-oh and arceus are my favorite Pokemon from mythical creatures from movies to shows on the dvds
Ninetales is my all time favorite Pokémon and as a fan of foxes I have been fascinated by the Japanese folk stories surrounding this mystical fox glad to see it made in this top ten list 👍🦊❤️
Great list but the Three Big Birds should've been here as well. Articuno is based on Rhoc from Persian myths, Zapdos is based on the Thunderbird from Native American legends, and Moltres is based on the firebird from Russian folklore. They also represent the seasons- Articuno being winter (obviously), Zapdos is Summer because he brings thunder and rainstorms, and Moltres being spring because in stories the Firebird uses its powers to end winter and bring spring.
The story inspiring the other two is subjective, Emboar is inspired from a general around the Han dynasty before that story was made, in the "Romance of the three kingdoms". And Blaziken is really just an allusion to cockfighting as it heavily resembles japanese chickens.
While not based on a mythical creature and I don't remember where I heard this before, the Hoothoot was based on an owl the concept artist had seen in his childhood growing up that would always stand on one leg.
Groudon and Kyogre where inspired in TrenTren and CaiCai Vilu, two serpents from the Mapuche Mythology that, one wanted to drown all humanity increasing the water level and the other incrrased the earth to keep the alive, making the Islands in the world
My sister and I used to scare my brother to go to bed, by telling him If he didn't go to sleep the nightmare monster would come. My brother told me recently that we absolutely terrified him, I feel a little guilty now.
As number one I'd put magikarp/gyarados but only together. They're based on a Chinese myth of some golden fish (magikarp) that if they successfuly jump over a bridge they turn into golden dragons (gyarados).
I've never seen froslass or whiscash probably missed those episodes and I most certainly did not know about zygarde's 100% mode. I definitely need to see that movie. Every other Pokemon I know about but I only think I know about torterra's mythical origins

Do top 10 Digimon based on mythical creatures and folklores
If done right, a combination of anime and real life history is actually a really fun thing to see. This video proves that.
Throw in some mythology for good measure and you’ve just described the Fate Anime Series’s.
I learnt history with Fate
I agree 100%.

Pokemon is not just an anime. It's also a game.
The four guardians of Alola are based on the four major Hawaiian gods: Tapu Koko (Kū), Tapu Lele (Kāne), Tapu Bulu (Lono), and Tapu Fini (Kanaloa)

Anubis/ a jackel
You answered your own question. Lucario is so popular, he gets to be playable in Smash Bros. Let the other Pokemon have a chance to shine, lmao.
There is more than ten based on mythological creatures. WAY more.
Even Jynx is partially based on a Japanese Yokai
Yama-Uba is that Yokai

*after hearing Torterra’s origin*
Oh, so that’s why the Torterras in the live action are giants.
Torterra reminds of the Lion-Turtles from Avatar The Las Airbender since they were both based on the World Turtles.
I like pokemon and mythical monsters both are my favorite kind of creatures.
Always fascinating to learn more about the inspiration behind these Pokémon.😊
I love knowing that these Pokemon were inspired by some interesting mythical creatures.

Lucario - Based on Anubis, the ancient egyptian god of the death
Hydreigon is also based on the...you know... hydra.
*facepalm* Why do people always say Rayquaza is Quetzelcoatl-based when it's not? It's Ziz, to go along with the other Hebrew legends.
Where's Rayquaza as it was inspired by Quetzalcoatl.

Wasn't Gyarados inspired by the Chinese dragon?
This is what I came to say. A Chinese legend that when a carp struggles to the top of a mythical waterfall it ascends and becomes a dragon.
Also, arcanine was meant to be a legendary but then they made moltes in its place, as it made more sence to have 3 birds rather than 2 birds and a dog
