    @ 1:35 minutes, 12" f4.5 Kodak Ektar... legendary portrait lens... just covers 8x10, ideal for 5x7 head/shoulder portraits.
    Image reality -vs- interpreted..
    One of the most neutral, color accurate, moderate contrast color transparency films made was Fuji Astia... IMO, the best color transparency film made. Proved to be not very popular...
    Fuji Velvia false color, high contrast, stylized color rendition and image result... became a legendary color transparency film among landscape and other color film image makers.. Tried Velvia at introduction, never again.. ick.
    Seems in modern times of digital, film image makers separate their images from digital by "look" and process.. This alone is not enough, the foundation of what makes an effective and expressive image remains.
    Point being, staying in the business of selling film means offering products that the user base is interested in, not what is technically ideal. In much the same way as how Hollywood functions and works, it has always been much about selling and marketing fantasy_want to believe.. Truth, reality and honesty is not always what folks want or is interested in.

      We have! We use a lot of the big cameras in our HQ for fun and for tests. No current plans for 8x10 - need to see what the demand is for 4x5 first and if that is successful, then we can consider 8x10 as a possibility.

      @@CineStillFilm great that you are delving into 4x5" film, would be great to see it in Australia, are you just doing B&W, or are you going for colour too?; PS: if you make it cheap, aka Lomography price point, then EVERYBODY could afford to shoot LF cameras ( as for most stocks it costs ~ AUD$350 per box, of 10-25 sheets\box)-so to get learners into it, you NEED to make it affordable, so we can practice enough to get good shots.

      @@CineStillFilm Good to know. Thanks. Judging by the demand for the 4 x 5, the 8 x 10 may not be that far behind. (I'm hoping so, anyway).

      @@andyvan5692 Hey Andy! We expect it to make it's way to Australia this summer. We're working with a few of our partners out there to carry it! Right now we are just doing color film, our 400D, but once we can get a sense of demand for that, we're open to exploring other possibilities for our films in that format. As for price, we only make 4x5 in a 25 sheet box, and that sells for just under $110 USD. We hope this can help make 4x5 more accessible as well!

      This legal action targeted people using "Cinestill" either blatantly on their packaging (Japanese/Chinese resellers) or other outfits using the name somewhere in their copy whether it be on the box or their website. This can be damaging to a company and you have to control the perception of your product.

    • @samtt2001
      @samtt2001 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@analog_astronaut That doesn't mean they handeled the situation well, nor that they didn't go after completely innocent sellers. They did the big asshoel company thing and I just can't support a brand like that. Especially not with the exorbitant prices they ask for respooled film, which can be bought for way cheaper and has the same quality. Especially BWxx is insanely expensive for what it is

    • @Caballeroshot
      @Caballeroshot 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@samtt2001 They didn't go after anyone if we're being honest. A seize and desist notice is not law abiding, it's a notice of a subsequent lawsuit if their trademark or their product is somehow affected by knock offs and they continue to do so after being given notice. There were no innocents in this case, some mom and pop shop didn't stay afloat respooling kodak cine film, they did so with the full intent to capitalize on the marketing CS had already done. You don't have to buy it either, and no they are not the same product. Everyone else is doing their own version of cooking the remjet as best they can, CS is either having Kodak do it for them or buying the stock outright prior to it being applied for cinema use which is why its quality is completely different.

    • @samtt2001
      @samtt2001 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@Caballeroshot There absolutely are innocents in this case. They tried to trademark "800T" and sent C&Ds to small companies. Many of those companies sold respooled Kodak fiml before Cinestill even entered the market.
      And "capitalizing on their marketing" is just a nonsense argument, because that's just how markets work. When Ford started marketing cars, the market grew, and thus those other companies as well. On top of that, as you mention yourself, they don't sell the same product as those small companies. They get film without remjet, those other companies remove it. It's a different product, so Cinestill shouldn't even ATTEMPT to threaten those small companies, unless they directly use their name. They also trademarked it in the US, so that makes it even crazier that they would be willing to go after innocent companies instead of the actual perpetrators.
      The main problem is that Cinestill tried to exploit the legal system to create a bigger market share for themselves unfairly, even though they did not invent 800 iso film, they did not invent tungsten film, they did not invent respooling, nor did they invent marketing.

    How did you find the sharpness of the film wide open, were there any issues with the thinner base? Cheers

    • @BetweenTheBellows
      @BetweenTheBellows  5 месяцев назад +1

      The film is thin, and the biggest issues were from processing at home, the sheets will curl quite a bit when they are hanging to dry. Once dried and sleeved, I put them in between pages of a heavy book to flatten them before scanning. I have to do more tests with super fast lenses that open more than f5.6 to see how it goes. The film straight out of the box from the fridge had a slight curve to it, but I noticed when it got up to room temp it relaxed its shape a little bit. Hope that helps.

  • @andyvan5692

    one interesting point, if Cinestill ever do LF film this Halation layer is important, in LF film holders, this chemical acts as an anti reflection coating, stopping back exposures from the light reflecting off the septum of the holder (back wall of the holders' film compartments); and giving sun stars, or other flare marks.

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 5 месяцев назад

      Depends on the film holder! The (now no longer available) wooden Chamonix holders have a matte septum (didn't know this word) and don't reflect. But it's not only a problem with LF film holders, the metal film plates in many 35 mm cameras are also slightly reflective. No problem with the black backing paper of 120 film, though (interesting aspect of the black inner coating of this paper).

      I think "scam artists" is a bit harsh. But I have to say, the lack of irony and personal awareness of the statement at 6:51 is so f'ing hilarious. I'm personally not a fan of the film, those nighttime 7-11/gas station shots with the heavy halation are so played out.
