the driver thing is already an issue in laptops. and has been snce forever. sure you can get "drivers" from nvidia or amd. but for the -proper- driver you need to get them from the manufacturer brand, like HP or Dell. I have a laptop with an amd a4 and radeon hd 8600m discrete graphics, and AMD drivers -cannot- let me use the discrete graphics. windows only sees the integrates as both powersaving and performance device.
Up until AMD released Ryzen, I've never been an AMD fan of any sort. With Ryzen, I'll give their CPUs a break, much cheaper than a similar Intel chip Hz for Hz and Thread to Thread, but graphics, I've ALLLllllways had problems with them. I mean, since the 90s, I've never owned an AMD chipped GPU unless it was stuck on the mobo (Which I disabled and used discrete). I've always had nVidia, and I doubt I'll ever change. It's not PERFECT, but, I've RARELY EVER had any problems on the dozens of computers that I've called my "daily driver" since then.
... You do realize how insanely old the 8600M is, right??? Expecting chips that old to have driver support is simply absolutely utterly fucking delusional. 🤷
I think Amd is doing to these APUS what NVDIA is doing to Gamer graphics cards. Only treating them as a side thought after they’ve figured out how to make the most money from something else.
> Only treating them as a side thought after they’ve figured out how to make the most money from something else it is surprise Nvidia still produce "consumer GPUs", because Nvidia have not just full-server monopoly on corporation-business level, but also huge military contracts, and remember Tesla use about 5 Nvidia GPUs per every car. Those corporations at this point just way too far from reality of common people.
I understand the argument about AMD providing driver support, but I feel it is unfortunately an issue of expectations. The reason I feel this comes down to a word that was said numerous times in this video: console. AMD makes hardware for XBOX and Playstation, plus the Steam Deck, and those consoles rely on their hardware manufacturers to provide the updates necessary to improve performance and game compatibility. Even ASUS, who makes a similar handheld that runs on Windows while having an actual gaming PC division that does see those same updates, requires you to get drivers exclusively from their website. I think the issue here is in the agreement made on the parts purchased. Despite them being similar or the same to what is in the laptops, if the purchase agreement was for console hardware I think that’s why AMD is hands off on the driver updates. It sucks when it requires to rely on a smaller company with fewer resources to get that done, but I would think that’s on the manufacturer for not establishing a means to do those updates in a timely manner.
Why does everyone keep complaining about the steam deck not being pocketable enough? The OneXFly looks like is not going to fit in my pockets either. I wouldn't want to put any of these handhelds in my pocket anyway. I would end up breaking them.
Putting higher resolution screens in these handhelds if proof that consumers don't know what features are actually important. It is also a great example of how marketing having precedence over engineering is stupid. "If we put a bigger number on the box it will sell more! Who cares if it only has 80% of the battery life and only hits 41fps instead of 60fps?" 1280x800 is a BETTER resolution for these devices than 1920x1200. It is not a side-grade. It is measurably better. How did we suddenly find it okay to go back to GameGear/Nomad battery-lifes? Because we are chasing big numbers instead of making things play 'better'.
So I don’t have a Windows-based device to test this tho the Linux application Input Remapper should allow you to map any input detected by the OS to any other key or combination. And the keystrokes for the Steam and QAM buttons are “Ctrl + 1” and “Ctrl + 2” respectively. Found this out because Bazzite OS has that program natively installed
I would also recommend Bazzite. It’s a Fedora-based Steam OS clone that comes with many of the custom mods people make to the software preinstalled, as well as Nvidia support
Playnite has a big picture mode, and I think you can install from playnite. Correct me if I am wrong. You can also set it up to boot directly I to playnite full-screen on startup. There is even a theme to make it look the the steamdeck interface.
I understand the argument, but don't fully agree. The OEM knows exactly what hardware they put in their handhelds, so they know precisely how to tweak it fully. Laptops can have the same hardware but perform differently, monitors can have the same panels but perform differently. Sure AMD could perhaps offer a generic do-it-all driver to consumers, which intel never did for their SOC tablet-chips, but noone would use it because of poorer perfomance. That seems like a lot of R&D with little ROI for AMD.
Is there no virtual mouse switch on this? That’s a lifesaver on GPD Systems. Also there’s a way to force the correct touchscreen keyboard to live in the taskbar to force that keyboard anytime you want. But I’m more curious about the virtual mouse…?
Smallest with a 7 inch display, and since you have to run windows.. i would not go lower than 7 without a magnyfing lens on the side. Upscaling text in windows past a certain size makes it go wild!
Regarding AMD laptop/emdedded APUs, I use a Lenovo Laptop with a Ryzen 3700U. The only errors I ever had were due to a Windows setting/feature, when I installed the AMD provided drivers. They are solved by changing the setting temporarily, and restarting the install. What exactly is the error you encounter?
All good and fine that it is a great handheld but can it be self repaired? Steam Deck can be opened and Valve still covers Warranty. And now a days such proprietary handhelds should not be produced.
valve really set the benchmark with the steam deck, there really hasn't been anything that better than the steamdeck though you are locked into steam still
@@CraftComputing Chimera works fine for me on the 6800u version of the Win 4 and others so that’s what I use. Your video is about the onxfly and your experience is on an early backed indiegogo product without drivers that doesn’t match mine ;).
Z1E/ryzen 7040 based handhelds are way better in terms of performance and don't require streaming for the vast majority of games. where the steam deck shines is the price though.
I loved your review on the Onexfly and also had a question for ya and that is do you think it would be powerful enough to run wireless pcvr games such as halflife alex and vrchat plus others like it on the go?
I dont doubt that it requires alot of power to do so however a youtuber reviewed the Asus Rog Ally and showed that it was possible to do VRChat and halflife alex mind you not very well but still possible on the Ally and from what ive heard the APU in the Onexfly is about the same as the Ally's in terms of power However unlike the Ally where it has a fixed amount of Video ram / Ram the Onexfly dosnt as its Video Ram is shared with the Main Ram which means you could potentially sacrifice 32 gigs of ram if you have the 64 gig model and give the APU 32 gigs of Video Ram which is alot of horsepower although even still it would require alot of actual electricity to power all of that which would need to be plugged in and set to turbo mode 30 watts atleast if not 40 watts but i do beleave that it is possible im just not sure how much a a difference the Video Ram would give compared to a fixed amount that and technically the Onexfly would have access to more ram then the Ally that is depending on the model you get.@@CraftComputing
Ram =/= compute power. HL:Alyx only requires around 4GB of memory at low detail settings. More RAM means nothing above that. And VR not running well to me means not running at all. Speaking as someone who used to own a VR Arcade.

You know, the segment on AMD and driver support could kill products, companies, and games. It makes these handhelds an almost unacceptable risk due to the issues with games potentially not even working at all. One could argue that AMD’s decision could, in the next few years, ultimately kill the handheld market. This issue with AMD and drivers has been around since they were a separate company called ATI and it’s been nearly 20 years of the same nonsense. Until today I would have considered these valid mobile gaming platforms, but not I will instead revert to the previous recommendation of laptop with Nvidia GPU.
@@CraftComputing it's not bad but still noticeably larger. though supposedly AMD is working on a legit SOC that should enable some much smaller devices especially if paired with solid state cooling.
Maybe steam os like system is a better solution for these devices when it comes to APU drivers update, all should be integrated into kernel and mesa, right?
Valve was all ready making a patch for starfield, why other handheld needed wait for AMD. Is why I think Valve holding the handheld market together. Other companies don't have there house in order even AMD. But I think over all other companies need to do Linux driver for there hardware so it's not all on the chimera os dev to do all the work getting it fix.
The driver problems are very similar to the issues with the driver issues found in Android. It is complete crap that LG phones have older/glitchier gpu drivers than a otherwise comparable Samsung phone.
I remember when NVIDIA used to palm the driver updates off to laptop manufacturers and we used to have to hack the official drivers to get them working on laptops. Do better AMD
NGL I kinda lost interest halfway through but what the hell is AMD thinking? Expecting OEMs to work on the drivers reeks on Android's nonsense of depending on cell phone makers or telecom companies to provide updates for their devices.
There is a reason the Xbox doesn’t run Windows… even Microsoft knows there are issues with that OS on a game controller driven device. I don’t know why other companies can’t see it as well.
The MD driver issue is annoying. But there is way for unofficial drivers to be installed. I believe back when adrenaline was in its teen versions somebody made a tool to generically signed for devices AMD drivers because they were just freaking garbage back then
Jeez, 31 minutes and I didn't talk battery?!? At 15W, I got around 5 hours of battery. That means closer to 4hr at 18W, and around 2.5hr at a full 30W, though you might get slightly less than that with the fan ramped up. Very impressive overall.
@@CraftComputing Wow that is impressive. This is why I'm surprised at the Steam Deck's small battery considering its size. Even the Ally looked like it could of had a larger battery.
As a Steam Deck and Ally user, despite the performance differences, the SteamOS experience is so much better for a handheld. As it currently stands, the general handheld Windows experience is just not nice at all. I don't see it improving any time soon as addressing handheld issues is not even remotely close to being of any importance to MS.
@@rayproductionsbackupchanne3862 well that demonstrates the issue. The need to go and install a completely different OS to get a much better experience shouldn't be needed. imo shipping with windows on a handheld is a bad idea at the moment
@@rayproductionsbackupchanne3862HoloISO is kinda out of date for these newer devices..ChimeraOS should be alright in theory but its a very stripped down OS, deliberately so.Which means if you need to fiddle under hood to.get stuff working, it isn't the best experience IMHO. I'm hoping soonish, that will allow home buttons and the like to be configured.
ChimeraOS now runs absolutely fine on the Ally. There is currently only one bigger bug: If you put the Ally to sleep by pressing the on/off button, sometimes when yoou wake it up it has problems to handle the button inputs. A reboot fixes this. They guys are realy great, they even trying to get the gyro working.
The SteamOS is number 1 IMO... sure its a PITA to load launchers outside of Steam OS and you can't play COD... so it's not perfect but its the future and Windows should take note... As much as I am desperate for more power than the Steam Deck can give I think the market needs to settle out and AMD need to get their shit together before I part with big bucks for a cutting edge device.
The one answer to the _Red Dead Redemption_ issue that I know of is, predictably, to use Linux. Of course, it would be possible to put ChimeraOS on here and fix the issues with screen rotation and built in buttons, but manual configuration of the rotation and the buttons may be a bit beyond most users' familiarity with Linux. It's likely that within a few months of this machine's actual release it will have sensible defaults pre-configured in ChimeraOS, so there is that.
@@CraftComputing Seems like AMD has more work to do on the drivers then... Not really a suprise given the other driver issues you talked about in this video.
“world’s” adjective is usually marketing speak for who really cares. lol. it may be nice tech but even if it was world’s second smallest, it doesn’t really affect anything other than on some intangible list that has nothing to do with bettering my life. just glad tech is improving overall.
This is why you take a chance on a bigger named brand like ASUS or Lenovo when it comes to these Windows handhelds because they have the resources to dedicate towards driver updates. With the higher price of these lesser known brands, it makes it hard to spend my money on these until they show they can reliably release drivers with a quick turnaround time.
Honestly I would like to see bigger screams on such devices like the steam deck and rog ally do. However I do not need 1080p on those. I'd rather have better performence and an IPS display that looks pretty at a lower resolution. The screens are still so small that 800p would be enough in my opinion. further I'd like to see a more 4:3 or 16:10 like aspect.
Except you still can't access the System or Context menus from in game, as there are no hotkeys that will work for that. So no... not all the problems are solved.
😂😂😂 windows compatible with gaming. If you are going to be doing retro gaming on one of these the compatibility on ProtonGE is probably better than hunting down various wrappers and fixed EXEs would be on a handheld. For anti cheat and game store launchers like Epic or EA sure, but for older titles I'm not entirely sure about windows being more compatible.

It's not PERFECT, but, I've RARELY EVER had any problems on the dozens of computers that I've called my "daily driver" since then.
... You do realize how insanely old the 8600M is, right??? Expecting chips that old to have driver support is simply absolutely utterly fucking delusional. 🤷
The dude hasn't updated his opinion of AMD, Intel or nVidia in the last decade. Just ignore and move on.
Emphasis is the asterisk (*) on RUclips, not the tilde (~) or dash (-).
I think Amd is doing to these APUS what NVDIA is doing to Gamer graphics cards. Only treating them as a side thought after they’ve figured out how to make the most money from something else.
> Only treating them as a side thought after they’ve figured out how to make the most money from something else
it is surprise Nvidia still produce "consumer GPUs", because Nvidia have not just full-server monopoly on corporation-business level, but also huge military contracts, and remember Tesla use about 5 Nvidia GPUs per every car.
Those corporations at this point just way too far from reality of common people.
No such thing as team red or green...
Who cares if it only has 80% of the battery life and only hits 41fps instead of 60fps?"
1280x800 is a BETTER resolution for these devices than 1920x1200. It is not a side-grade. It is measurably better.
How did we suddenly find it okay to go back to GameGear/Nomad battery-lifes? Because we are chasing big numbers instead of making things play 'better'.
The beer reviewed clearly mirrored the device sentiment to the T 😅
Where did you get that shirt?
damn my boy lookin crisp
I'm interested in buying a handheld this year, but buying one with out actually holding it seems strange. Feel is just too subjective.
The ChimeraOS wiki describes how to change screen rotation. That being said, a GUI would certainly be more intuitive.
xrandr did absolutely nothing for me.
isn't the aya neo air 1s smaller, can't even live up to it's one claim!
I think its a different cpu, don't hold me to it though- I could easily be wrong
I think it’s the smallest with a high refresh rate 1080p screen, aya neo is still running 60fps
same cpu@@buddybleeyes
So I don’t have a Windows-based device to test this tho the Linux application Input Remapper should allow you to map any input detected by the OS to any other key or combination. And the keystrokes for the Steam and QAM buttons are “Ctrl + 1” and “Ctrl + 2” respectively. Found this out because Bazzite OS has that program natively installed
I would also recommend Bazzite. It’s a Fedora-based Steam OS clone that comes with many of the custom mods people make to the software preinstalled, as well as Nvidia support
Love that shirt 🎽. Where did you get it?
Adrenaline 23.9.1 is up Im sure as all of you probably have heard. Performance is actually very good and stable now.
The bigger question is: Will it run Proxmox off a Ventoy stick? :D
Well, hopefully I can get one of those in a physical store in my next visit to the US in 2026.
Is there no virtual mouse switch on this? That’s a lifesaver on GPD Systems. Also there’s a way to force the correct touchscreen keyboard to live in the taskbar to force that keyboard anytime you want. But I’m more curious about the virtual mouse…?
Onexfly or rog ally which one should I buy
For rdr2 you have to switch to dx12 in game settings
Is that really the smallest 7840u system? How about the Ayaneo Air 1s? Or the GPD Win Mini?
Smallest with a 7 inch display, and since you have to run windows.. i would not go lower than 7 without a magnyfing lens on the side. Upscaling text in windows past a certain size makes it go wild!
needs to be native portrait 100%
Regarding AMD laptop/emdedded APUs, I use a Lenovo Laptop with a Ryzen 3700U. The only errors I ever had were due to a Windows setting/feature, when I installed the AMD provided drivers. They are solved by changing the setting temporarily, and restarting the install. What exactly is the error you encounter?
Oh my god I'm so sorry you opened this beer for this review
It was one of the worst I've ever had on the channel.
@CraftComputing you gonna put this up on floatplane?
All good and fine that it is a great handheld but can it be self repaired? Steam Deck can be opened and Valve still covers Warranty. And now a days such proprietary handhelds should not be produced.
Your rdr2 solution is not to run it in Vulkan but run it in dx, had the same issue on the gpd win 3
What Jeff should have said: trust me bro!
Unrelated comment: that beer seem to be missing its head. Or was it just filmed long after the pour?
It was a 10% IPA. They typically don't develop a head, even with aggressive pours.
valve really set the benchmark with the steam deck, there really hasn't been anything that better than the steamdeck though you are locked into steam still
What benchmark lol and you’re not locked to steam on the Steam deck there are tutorials to load your own OS on all these devices :). I like Chimera
...you might want to listen to the whole video before saying "JUST INSTALL CHIMERA" ;-)
@@CraftComputing Chimera works fine for me on the 6800u version of the Win 4 and others so that’s what I use. Your video is about the onxfly and your experience is on an early backed indiegogo product without drivers that doesn’t match mine ;).
How are you "locked into steam" on the Steamdeck?
Z1E/ryzen 7040 based handhelds are way better in terms of performance and don't require streaming for the vast majority of games.
where the steam deck shines is the price though.
AMD gave access to latest driver version 23.9.1 to all 7840u handhelds
That's pretty impressive performance for only consuming 18 and 30 watts.
I loved your review on the Onexfly and also had a question for ya and that is do you think it would be powerful enough to run wireless pcvr games such as halflife alex and vrchat plus others like it on the go?
I don't think so. VR requires SOO much more graphical horsepower than an APU can provide.
Nice handheld!
@4:03 -- Is...that the ARK:Survival Evolved logo for the A button? -- Edit: aww, I guess not. It doesn't have the horizontal section of the A, but man...it's similar.
Sadly, you aren't going to be adding 151 rum anymore. Bacardi discontinued it a few years ago.
Bacardi isn't the only 151 out there.
interms of poketability nothing has really replaced the GPD win 2.
I think you're really going to like the GPD Win Mini...
@@CraftComputing it's not bad but still noticeably larger. though supposedly AMD is working on a legit SOC that should enable some much smaller devices especially if paired with solid state cooling.
I've held one, and I own a Win 2. It's on par with the Win 2 for overall footprint.
The driver install fails with an error 182? Dammit.
I remember when NVIDIA used to palm the driver updates off to laptop manufacturers and we used to have to hack the official drivers to get them working on laptops. Do better AMD
NGL I kinda lost interest halfway through but what the hell is AMD thinking? Expecting OEMs to work on the drivers reeks on Android's nonsense of depending on cell phone makers or telecom companies to provide updates for their devices.
why not stop using windows and switch to steamos? Fr I don't think I can ever do windows handheld because I know how good steamos is.
It all comes down to support, doesn't it? Steam Deck has the most chance of being supported in 5 years.
n beyond
Removable batteries, why won't they listen. 3 hours is not enough then recharging.😅
It's a prototype, i understand some stuff don't work well.
It's not THE smallest, AYANEO Air 1S is.
There is a reason the Xbox doesn’t run Windows… even Microsoft knows there are issues with that OS on a game controller driven device. I don’t know why other companies can’t see it as well.
The MD driver issue is annoying. But there is way for unofficial drivers to be installed. I believe back when adrenaline was in its teen versions somebody made a tool to generically signed for devices AMD drivers because they were just freaking garbage back then
We shouldn't have to rely on community hacks to use hardware we buy.
How was battery life at the different wattages?
I don't see it improving any time soon as addressing handheld issues is not even remotely close to being of any importance to MS.
how come you are not using/trying out stuff like holoiso? its steam os for most pc's. especially good for amd systems.
I'm hopeful the Fedora based Bazzite will strike the middle ground between SteamOS and ChimeraOS. Still some work to go but I know HandyGCCS will be available in Bazzite.
Here’s to Clarence 🍻
To Clarence!
Windows UI isn't designed at all. They just throw new UI elements in every year and don't care at all about consistency or overall user experience.
All the sections on wonky functions remind me of a movie scene. PC Load Letter? What the F*%$ is PC Load Letter?
Not a gui way to do it, but xrandr should be abe to rotate the screen with "xrandr -o inverted"
xrandr did nothing for me
@@CraftComputing Seems like AMD has more work to do on the drivers then... Not really a suprise given the other driver issues you talked about in this video.
Crowd funded😂 Next!
“world’s” adjective is usually marketing speak for who really cares. lol. it may be nice tech but even if it was world’s second smallest, it doesn’t really affect anything other than on some intangible list that has nothing to do with bettering my life. just glad tech is improving overall.
Does this have a Touchscreen?
Yes
Intel do similar with their graphics drivers
7500 mhz is only for LPDDR5X and not LPDDR5
Windows for me its a plus!!
ive been windows on my whole life dont mide microsoft crazy updates😂 well i try beforr chimera but its not for me despite my office using linux😂
Every Windows complaint you have can easily be solved with steam big picture. Steam big picture is literally the OS layout of the steam deck now
Except you still can't access the System or Context menus from in game, as there are no hotkeys that will work for that. So no... not all the problems are solved.
@@CraftComputing Yes, without workarounds. That is true.
Getting something for free counts as a paid promotion!
My family survives by eating old review samples..
Seriously though, this video makes me around $100 on AdSense. Some of my more popular vids might bring in $500 over their lifetime. Which means without receiving a review sample, you wouldn't be watching anything.
It's called a disclosure so there's no question about me being paid for my opinion or not. And like I said, you can make up your own mind on whether or not you trust me.
Wow, no OLED at that size. What are they doing.
Competing with the specs and price points of other handhelds. OLED at this size would be $100 more at least, and put them out of competition with the Ally. You have to draw the line somewhere.
@@CraftComputing I guess so. Thanks for reviewing!
Nice shirt dude. I think all pc handhelds are a fad, waste of time, its too many of them, they are all handhelds false claiming to be pc in a handheld (thats a lie) they are all switch wannabes and lastly they are a commercial flop! Nobody wants them. Everybody is anticipating the switch 2 vs all these BS handhelds. Oh, how can i forget? The battery life is terrible on all of them, defeating the purpose of it being handheld and or worthy of a purchase.
The only thing you touch in this video is your Tiki Fusion 😞
I barely even touched that!!!!
