The cost of the propane varies, and the amount we use on a field per year varies. It's been so long since we've purchased chemicals, we're not sure the average price per acre. We estimate that the costs are similar, based on what our conventional farming friends have told us.

What is the environmental cost of this compared to using conventional herbicides?

how many times do you flame during a season just curious about cost effectiveness vs chemical applications

very interesting. we use intercropping for weed control. in cali even with the drought since we are no till for 40 years plus. we have enough organic matter to handle it. we use a 8 seed blend. clover pop's first tho.

Have you considered stream? No risk of fire, can use it even during a burn ban. Steam will leave the organic material behind, which is desirable.. I don't know the effects of steam on corn, but i use steam to treat weeds in my home garden, with good results.

Are you on 20 inch rows? Looks like it works good but what do you do if it get too rainy and the corn gets too tall before you get through it?

What's the cost difference vs herbicides?

this looks better than gmo with roundup, but do you really harvest more energy than expend on this crop?
must be some crazy economy allowing overly cheap gas prices to sustain this process.

What's the advantage of Flame weeding vs Using an in row cultivator? What if you used the cultivator instead of the flame weeder in that video, would weeds be more of a problem?

We follow the flame weeding with a row cultivator. The flame weeder takes out weeds in the row (burners are pointed towards the base of the corn plants) that the cultivator cannot get to. It also does a better job at killing broad leaf weeds than cultivation alone.

Thank you for reply...can flame weeder ever be used for soybeans?

this kills the weeds that grow between each corn plant that a cultivator cannot reach, this is done when the growing point is below the ground
