- As Putin’s war in Ukraine rages on some countries still support Russia, but why?
Last week, the United Nations General Assembly held a vote to condemn Russia’s illegal annexation of four regions in Ukraine. The resolution was supported by 143 countries but four voted against and 35 abstained.
As bombs reigned down on Ukrainian cities and killed civilians, why is it that 39 nations either still support Russia, or remain neutral in this war?
Today, our International Editor Lindsey Hilsum tells us about the countries that still back Moscow and explains whether any of them are beginning to change their minds as the war doesn’t go to plan for Putin.

That's not up for discussion you see 🙂 The west can simply present one side, deliberately leaving out details can present a picture that gets accepted by the world by and large, and becomes the only narrative of any conflict. As a Southeast Asian, we actually don't care about the war as long as we can continue living our lives normally. Xi and Modi wants a peaceful resolution so that they can continue focusing on their economy.
Russia, Asia and Africa want and an end to thus war, so they can focus on their economies.
Boris Johnson flew to Ukraine to stop Zelenski reaching a peaceful deal with Russia, because NATO and America wanted the war to continue and weaken Russia, and USA wants to sell oil to Europe instead of Russia.

Supporting Russia (the Russia before it starts its colonial empire Rebuilding) is one thing but all but 4-5 country actually supports Russia's invasion of the entire UN body.

Most of the ASEAN does not support it and Singapore which is usually neutral like Sweden IS AGAINST IT.

Facts
HT lets not forget Russia has tolerated usa aggressive moves for years and years and warned that a continuation of admitting Ukraine and Georgia into Nato would trigger a war but the west constantly ignoring Russia and so they've decided to take things on their hands.
Valid points but slightly misguided, people do talk about the illegal war in Iraq, lest we not forget Iraq was an aggressor in invading Kuwait which cast the die as they became an unstable entity in a powder keg region and (ironically given the events that have unfolded) needed a regime change to protect an awful lot of the Arab countries around the region, however given regime change was not a legal mandate for war the WMD story was pedalled, but was well known they did not have any of sufficient quantity to pose a true global risk. The US could not tolerate missiles in Cuba because they were directly targeted at the US rather than being based there for generalised defence of the USSR and its allies (aggressive not passive), which at this juncture Cuba was not a Warsaw pact ally, NATO is not an aggressor as its prime function is the defence of the members. History has shown that even though the west is far from perfect it does not brutalise and slaughter dissidents, opponents, etc whereas dictatorial regimes do. What you also have to realise is that Kalingrad, parts of Finland, parts of Georgia and parts of Moldova were never parts of the Soviet Socialist republic but were taken by force however land grabs still are going on in certain parts of these regions and Russia will not cede the territory it acquired through armed conflict. Putin is trying to rewrite history so to compare what has happened with what is happening is not a true reflection on why the war started. He uses NATO as a foil to stop his own people rising up against him, but he must remember that the October revolution started when the returning conscripts saw all that was wrong with the country and demanded a change in repayment for their blood spilled on the failed battle field.
In order to know the present you must learn the history. The US lost the Korean War and also the Vietnam war(which the US started with a bogus story), both with Chinas assistance, the aggressor was always the US coming 8000KM to fight a war on someone else’s land.
Vietnam sure, korean? it was North Korean backed by Russia who invaded first, if not for US intervention, most of Korean will become pariah state like today's north korea. as a matter of facts US manage to push north korea way to the back to china when china decided to also send troops and push back US advanced into DMZ today. so the war was South korean +US vs North Korean + Russia + China

The war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia seems to weaken Europe for two generations or more. NATO did not adhere to the Minsk accords and stirred the pot by encroaching into Ukraine. The West needed this war and wanted this war. This might come back to bite Europe more than Russia. A very good interview none the less.

Russia had been asking for years that the Minsk agreements be adhered to and that NATO would stop its expansion as was promised. Antony Blinken stated that NATO has been training and arming Ukrainians forces in Donbass since 2014. Also since 2014 ethnic Russian citizens of Ukraine were shelled on a daily basis. In the days leading up to the SMO, the shelling became more frequent. Adhering to the Minsk agreements and curbing NATO expansion would have prevented the SMO but the absolute opposite was done.
So the SMO is justified?

As a person from a former British colony with popular secessionist movements, I completely understand Donbass and I admire Russia for doing what needed to be done to save its own people. There's a lot of points she made that were questionable. But the main 1 being the invision of Ukraine. Where was she in 2014 when the the majority Russian speaking part of Ukraine was being bombed by Kiev after the coup? When actually they see the Russians as liberators. I'm saddened to see how we in the UK do not see any arguments or debates that are balanced about this war. Its so 1 sided that you have to ask why. During the cold war most African countries adopted the non-aligned movement. In a sense they won't be dictated who their friends are. Also NATO bombed libya despite AU saying no. France is still acting coloniser in West Africa. So it's not in reaction of the past transgressions but current ones

Some on social media are bots, but from some of the people I have spoken to, I have said, "Yelling Americans have invaded other nations before, and Russia should be able to defend themselves." The reason why Third World countries remain non-aligned in this conflict is that we have access to different media where the pro-Russian perspective is not censored. We can compare and contrast different versions of the same events, and see which ones are backed up with evidence, which ones are debunked, etc. We can see the shelling of Donetsk city, and have access to information on the atrocities committed in Mariupol by the Azov batallion. There is a broad spectrum of support from our publics for the real victims of this conflict (started in 2014 by the post-coup government), the people of Donbass resisting Ukrainian terror.
So true. Most Western countries are only showing one side of the conflict otherwise their citizens would not support the decisions their governments are making. France has shown both sides of this conflict and their citizens are protesting sanctions and the resulting high gas prices and cost of living. The media has tried hard to hide it just as they hide the truth about the Ukraine/Russia conflict but there are videos of it on the internet. The audience on Channel 4 News particularly has a hard time accepting that they have only seen one side of the conflict and become quite agitated if you point out anything that goes against their beliefs and dismiss any proof you have as non-valid.

We found out from 1962 just a presence of Russian weapons within our hemisphere equals time to get out the nukes.
About 60 years ago Russia had a few missiles in Cuba so we decided that would be a very nice time to threaten the end of the world if they didn’t take them away. Great interview, but two key points about US China not correct.
16:30 1972 US approached China because it's losing the Vietnam war. By getting China away from USSR to side with US, in 1973 US could pull their forces away from Vietnam.
17:20 China didn't want to see US as enemy. In fact with friendship building from 1972, both the government including Xi and the people have mostly seen US as a friend, despite having small differences or disputes. Yes China wants to catch up and join ranks on the world stage, but see the world big enough for friendly competition and cooperation for all countries. It was the US who suddenly turned very hostile towards China, starting from Trump era, using China as an election campaign pivot, and put China on the opposite side of everything to counter its rise. China is forced to start seeing US as a foe rather than a friend.

@@johnnyrocker7495 key word *relatively....the amount of wars going on throughout the world today is a small amount compared to certain decades in the last hundred years, the whole world was at war in the 1910's and 1940's, never mind the past couple thousand, crusades, Greco Persian wars and the Roman expansion too name a few. In China alone 40 million people died in the war of the three kingdoms. That's DOUBLE the amount of people who died in WW1. The world isnt perfect these days unfortunately but it's definitely not rotten, there is alot of good in this world.

Very good analysis and explanation. But what was really the cause of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine and why was not prevented? Would’ve the neutrality of Ukraine and even the Donbas independence been a better choice rather than the the current situation? I think you have been drawn into the narrative Russia wants you to be talking about. An easier explanation can be found simply by a thug state being pissed off nobody close wants anything Russian these days. That a comedian in a country next door sits on massive energy reserves. That Russia can steal those and show that comedian who is boss. That massive failings in Russia can be hidden by revisiting old cold war mentalities. Talks of Donbas or Nato are just the plausible excuse to their own audience.

This is a very good and comprehensive coverage of geopolitics, past and present. Top marks for both the interviewer and the interviewee.
HISTORY...we learn histories about the mighty Romans, the Mongols, Napoleon, and of course the British Empire. But like the common saying..."history is written by winners." Yes indeed. There are many facts, atrocities, exploitation, cruelties, etc, that never get to the ink on paper stage. And that is the kind of history that comes back to influence how we think, how we behave, and what to believe , or not to believe.
"Forget and forgive". The winners would often hope the losers would simply do just that, to forgive and forget the past when atrocities were leveled at them. But resentment merely simmers beneath the surface, and rears its head to bite.
Deny it if you may, but I believe that there is some elements of racial tone in the current geopolitical arrangements. How so? Well, think of the G7, think of NATO, the AUKUS, the QUAD, etc, who run the show? The very colonists who used to rule the world. Sadly for them, the world has moved on, and they no longer hold the whip and the megaphone. The ex-masters now are struggling to work out how to deal with the situation where their exclusivity in terms of power and technologies, is eroded. So now they wanted to carve out the world into two...one led by the US, and the other a conglomerates of nations which are "unlike-minded" of the US such as China, Russia, part of Asia, Africa, and South America.
Interesting times indeed.

There are other countries surrounding these countries and witnessing events. History is not written by winners and even in many cases the winning countries have recorded atrocities done in their names. "victory written by winners" only applies within records of own country if you live in totalitarian regime.

I do agree with you on most of your points. The winners get to write history to suit themselves and their views. This influneces how we see the world. We never often get to know the unvarnished truth because the losers have been vanquished so their story often is not told. We have to take what we are taught about history in schools "with a grain of salt". I have learnt alot more about history since then. The US and some European countries have a tendency to still see many of its former colonies in Asia and in particular Africa as backwater countries needing their aid. Many of these countries have moved on however and have significant middle income populations and this China has recognized and is exploiting and trading has largely shifted in that direction. Many of these countries are largely ignored by western countries, they are not given a seat on any international institutions that matter, China comes closest to getting that recognition. So why would these countries want to show strong support for their former colonial masters?

India was the one major country which gave the British a spring board to eventually become the British Empire. From India, the British Empire expanded into Africa and Asia, with China getting the worst deal in the form of opium trades.

Ukraine is not a passive participant in this conflict , it is a leading participant. It is fully in charge of its own decisions , are you seriously suggesting that if the west wasn't helping it , then Ukraine would be happy to invaded and would have accepted it ? Hmmm, much of the discussion was interesting how other countries feel about the conflict, but a large part of the Ukraine situation was left out. The coup in 2014 supported by the UK mi6 and US spooks to oust newly elected Ukrainian leadership friendly to Russia. The new leadership that emerged aliegned with a militant Nazi faction that is a negative force against Ukrainians of Russian heritage in the civil war conflicts for years before the Russian invasion. Also there was no mention of the lopsided vote of of the people in the eastern areas of Ukraine to join Russia and it was the UK that was instrumental in breaking down the most recent diplomacy discussions between Russia, Ukraine and western interests.

Lindsey Hilsum has such a succinct, frighteningly clear but charming way of explaining her impressions and understanding of conflicts. As a Yank, I find her courage as a correspondent to be exemplary since the 2004 Falluja campaign, again in Rwanda and now during Ukraine's quest for survival against the thugs of Russia. Her well-earned insights are useful and accurate. I guess we'll again see her in her next assignment when we go to war with China. Be safe, clever girl.

Putin knew he would have alternative markets and at the very least a lot neutral friends who wouldn’t be bent by the west. Russia is still a major power militarily(largest nuclear power) despite the setbacks, major energy power with a heavy hand in OPEC, and no matter what Western media says, the backing of China whos a counterweight to the US. The Russians were pretty well balanced and that’s why the west got it all wrong believing that they could sanction Russia into leaving Ukraine.
I think that Russia is definitely not going to leave Ukraine as a loser, or at least in a bad way. Because the Russian society is very easy to unite during the external negative impact. At the moment, almost 90% of opposition opinion leaders have left Russia, some of them have criminal cases in court. Russia's problem is that a democratic change of government, say, every 4 years would not lead to anything good. Because Russia is the largest country in the world, and in order to effectively carry out large-scale reforms and changes, one presidential term is not enough. Imagine how well the special services must work to eliminate all drug trafficking, prevent terrorist attacks and etc.

All I can say about wanting to put Russia back a generation or two, is that's what happened at the end of WWI with Germany. Put them back a generation or two and then they rose up even more powerful than before. Have to be very careful how you do that.
So did Japan but both nations have done so without a continued path of aggression. Would there be hope that Russia, if set back, could come back stronger and better than before? Economic success might be the centre of it.

Many countries have some % of their populations that are native to an adjoining country. Based on the Russian current model (similar to Germany in the 1930’s), any county is authorized to invade and incorporate a portion of their adjoining neighbor that contains that %.
With respect to Saudi Arabia, they have only one resource; oil. When it is gone, they are done. So, they need to obtain as much $ for the oil as possible. Why should they produce more of their only finite resource at a lower price?
All that money goes to the royal family. There are still beheadings and stonings in that country. Totally backward.
