Queen Elizabeth II's Historic Visit to China (1986)

  • In October 1986, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh made a historic visit to the People's Republic of China. Beginning the tour in the capital of Peking (Beijing), the Queen and the Duke were welcomed by presdient Li Xiannian and a parade on Tiananmen Square. Over the following days, the pair visited the Forbidden City in Beijing's Dongcheng District and were treated to a banquet hosted by President Li. ITN's cameras caught Queen Elizabeth II's warm meeting with Deng Xiaoping, the country's unofficial but undisputed leader credited with building modern China by reforming its society and opening up its economy.
Visits to the Great Wall of China and the port city of Shanghai saw the Queen greeted by adoring crowds; in Shanghai the monarch visited the historic Huxinting Teahouse with Sir Geoffrey Howe. Later that day, the Queen and the Duke invited President Li and his wife onto the Royal Yacht Britannia for a banquet. During a particularly amusing photocall, the president's wife told him to straighten his glasses before the Queen jokingly informed him that he was allowed to smile for the cameras. The archaeological wonder of the Terracotta Army in Shaanxi Province was of great interest to Prince Philip, and the Queen and Duke enjoyed a boat trip on Lake Dianchi before ending their trip in Canton.

秦晖Qin Hui:The closest thing to China's urban-rural dual registered residence system is the former apartheid system of white people against black people in South Africa. The common characteristics behind them are low human rights, lack of property rights, and inequality in public services.
The most fundamental reasons behind China's registered residence system are three inequalities: the first is the inequality of human rights, especially the right of residence. The second issue is unequal property rights. Chinese farmers do not have their real property and cannot freely buy and sell their land in the market. The third issue is inequality in public services, where government officials and high-ranking officials enjoy high privileges and benefits, urban residents enjoy low benefits, and rural residents and migrant workers enjoy negative benefits.
Today, China's "negative welfare" system has greatly exacerbated the gap between the rich and the poor, leading to the widespread low human rights situation of most people in China. Therefore, China's human rights issue is definitely not as simple as the human rights of Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong, but a comprehensive and overall human rights issue of most people.
Especially in the context of China's accession to the WTO and the game rules of economic globalization, the so-called "China model" actually takes advantage of the "negative welfare" and "low human rights" advantages of hundreds of millions of migrant workers in China, coupled with the Chinese government's ability to expropriate land, forcibly demolish buildings, and arbitrarily drive out low-end poor people to engage in "enclosure movements". Only by attracting a large amount of investment through the "China model" and making China a world's factory, can there be red sweatshops that exploit Chinese migrant workers more than capitalist sweatshops. If free and democratic countries around the world cannot unite to exert pressure on the Chinese government to change and improve China's "low human rights" and "negative welfare" situation, then labor in free and democratic countries will be affected and have to lower their human rights and welfare treatment to match that of migrant farmers and workers in China (this can be seen from the documentary "American Factory").
For a government with unlimited power, unlimited accountability can be exercised until it cannot bear it. The way out for China still lies in a gradual and peaceful transformation, with two key points: first, limiting the government's power; Secondly, the common people should vigorously seek welfare from the government. By achieving these two points, the ideal constitutionalism and democracy will also come. I think pressure can be continuously applied in both aspects. Gradually improve one thing at a time. The biggest problem that ultimately leads to the current system is the problem of too much power and too little responsibility, constantly being compressed. When it comes to matching power and responsibility, China's political system changes.

funny how this video showd 3 leaders of china, but none was the president li xiannian.
the three leaders are: deng xiaoping, just like what the commentator said, has no tittle at that time, but was the real paramount leader.
hu yaobang, at that tims was the party leader.
and jiang zeming, at that time was the party secretary of Shanghai city. 5 yrs later, he will becam the paramount leader of china.
on the other hand, president li was never had any real power. he was chosen to be president mostly because seniority.

I cannot help wondering whether the Queen cringed inside when watching the children dancing like trained robots, one even danced with a plastic garbage bin at her back, though it doesn’t show on her face at all. The translator dressed perfectly for that time. - as a Chinese person grew up during that time and now a citizen of the commonwealth , it now feels so exotic yet familiar at the same time to watch these footage.

Elizabeth is a 女王 “queen” not a 女皇 “empress”

In Chinese, queen could also be translated to "王后/皇后“ ”refers to the emperor's/king's wife. In China and Japan, a ruler of the nation is considered an "emperor/empress".

我认为这个视频的解说充满了一直以来对中国的偏见。I think the commentary in this video is full of long-standing prejudices against China.

There is definitely some of that in the video, but there is a lot of british humor in it, too.

A little bit of both: snobbery and humour, British humour. 😬

Has anyone else noticed the disrespectful and condescending language of the narrator? No wonder they lost the "Empire" and now enjoy an ever-residing backseat to the Americans and the rest of Europe.

There is no translation provided by yutube, so I can't understand it and I won't be emotional. I like the history of China, rich or poor.

Large portions of snobbery and humour... British toffee-nosed humour, in equal measure. 😬

      女王是善良的、宽容的、乐观的、坚强的人。当年的欢迎活动虽然是中国政府组织的,但是人们从内心尊重这位女性。今天,大多数中国人依然对女王充满敬意❤🙏
