A24 = original stories. Not remakes, sequels or recycled stories. They are bold. Even on their worst day I much rather watch one of their authentic new stories fail than to rehear/watch an altered recycled original. They are a fresh breath of air to cinema.

@@calebbatchman8598 exactly. I don’t even usually have to watch the movies now, just watch the trailer and know what happens 💀
I could just hug you for twenty minutes for saying something as beautiful as that. (((((((((((((((((((((Hugs!))))))))))))))))))))
Why?
Watched this at the movies last night. Epic. Hectic.
My closest friend had life long mental health issues, and had the same underlying soft loving nature as Beau in this movie.
I asked him once what it felt like to endure a psychotic episode, and he said that you absolutely can not distinguish the difference between a thought and something happening in real life.
A couple of years ago, we went surfing together, I dropped him home afterwards and made plans to surf again the next day. But he woke up, took his board to the beach and walked up to the edge of a 100ft cliff and jumped off, beautiful sunny morning at 9am.
The weight of what he carried around (and hid beautifully from most of the world) in the background of his mind was a war that was eventually to much to bare.
There was so many moments in this film that reminded me of moments in time that I’d seen him travel through.
Amazing movie that blurred the lines between the reality he encompassed and the torture of his anxieties.
"My closest friend has life long mental health issues" or ... had?
@@extravalewell, he did use "had" later in the text. So, you don't need to ask that
And he said his friend jumped off of a cliff dude don't be a dick trying to correct grammar anybody that has any sense at all would know exactly what he was saying he was talking about him in the past tense like he's no longer around . Dam man some people are really questionable these days
My heart is with you. The same "background of her mind was a war war that was eventually to much to bare." Thanks for sharing your heart. You put in words that I could not explain.

It really warms my heart to see A24 carve out their little niche and find so much success. This is what I loved about movies. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I want to watch big, dumb superhero popcorn flicks AND be blown away by stuff like this.
Love this take! Same!
Perfectly said. I want to have fun watching the big blockbusters like Top Gun or The Avengers, and still be moved or provoked by watching something like this, Hereditary, or EEAAO

This is a perfect example of how you do a trailer. You’re not getting a synopsis or plot of the the entire movie, but it perfectly gives you a setting and a vibe. Such a good trailer!
A24 always makes the best trailers it seems.
Umm we saw everything.
Well- clearly he’s a hypochondriac who is afraid of his mother ? That’s all I can take from the trailer
how can we be sure this video is the trailer, when it didnt start with a mini version of the trailer?
@@Njbear7453 and I’m sure you are right. Now let’s hope it’s good.
Ari Aster and Joaquin Phoenix sounded like a match made in heaven when Beau Is Afraid was first announced, now this looks like it will be one of the most bizarre, introspective, and comedically terrifying films in recent years and I couldn't be happier to welcome it with open arms.
It's giving me EEAAO vibes. Maybe it's the surrealism and absurd imagery.
Don't you find it weird to use such words to describe a film that isn't even out yet, based purely on it's trailer? Seems like I'm reading a review of a film that's already out, written by someone who's chronically on Letterboxd.
@@johndoe5346Doesn't look anything like that movie.
@@dexterpapa2 why are you so mad lol
@@tenebrae23He said “vibes.” Read.
There are a lot of controversial opinions about this movie. It’s more metaphorical, it represents how to live with anxiety, basically a nightmare of a person with severe anxiety in absurd, black comedic portrayal.
It’s also about relationships in your life and their importance ( parents, partners etc) and how parents can control you even as an adult, how they planted deep fears into us only to be hindered from reaching our full potential and joy. What it’s like not finding your place in society and feeling like an outcast, not fitting anywhere, but even if you have a chance to live a happy life and find your people, your inner fears, your traumas will come get you and draw you back to the source of every bad thing in your life, mind until you can’t escape and there’s no where to go.
It’s about traumas, fears, anxiety and how they can decrease someone’s quality of life, determine their present and future and how you can be the prisoner of your own mind due to them.
beautiful put
wait you’re serious huh????
It's psychosis! Paranoia.
It's about having a crazy mother and how having to take drugs to deal with the violent world.
One of the best and eloquent ways of summarizing the theme of the movies in ways I couldn't. Well done!
I saw Beau is afraid yesterday, honestly I don't regret the 3 hours I spent watching this, one thing is certain whether like it or not, you will never forget this movie.
Watched it last night and im already forgetting it, too pretentious
Amazing film!! A must see, unless your favourite all time film is some Avengers sequel
It's somewhat fascinating how your comment (Melissa) provides an intelligently balanced take... only to be followed by two radical takes from both sides of the coin. Honestly, Melissa, I wish more people were like you and could express their opinion truthfully without blatantly insulting the opposite thing.
@@CuckLordSinbad -))))
It's a strange movie I'm watching it now
I love how these trailers barely tell anything about what happens, so nothing is spoiled, but also show everything at once about the movie
This tells quite a bit actually. I think anyone who's seen The Truman Show already knows a decent amount of the plot with this. With that said, clearly there is more too it, but the similarities were all given away in this 'trailer'. Given the length of the trailer it would appear the "Truman Show" style surprise for the main character takes up a decent portion of the run time. Who knows. Could be wrong but this trailer could be half as long as still be good.

Same here. And while there are a lot of foreign films that are a lot weirder than this looks to be, I am so happy that A24 is encouraging American filmmakers to be as weird as they want and pushing artfull, unique filmmaking into the mainstream

I don't think they have a problem giving freedom. It's all about the money and profit these kinds of movies don't make since people are so conditioned to mainstream recycled ideas and sequels. But kudos to A24 ,they got Ari Aster's back and he continues to deliver new experiences for us.
Omg me too! I never thought of it that way but it’s true, A24 made me EXCITED for movies again, they just scratch that part of my brain
It's the kind of movie that makes you think for days afterwards. Absolutely brilliant movie
I really want to see this and waiting for it to come to streaming. I just love Joaquin Phoenix!
For months afterwards actually
I love when a good director gets popular enough that they're allowed to be weird.
midsommar and hereditary were already weird, in a good way.
A24 is a low budget studio. They pick up scripts and directors that typically won’t get funded by major production companies(ie. Avant garde movie ideas) in an attempt to hopefully turn a massive profit on a movie that deviates from the mainstream(marvel, Disney bs). It’s a [potentially] higher risk for a higher reward scenario. It has nothing to do with ari aster getting popular, but A24 giving aspiring directors a chance from the beginning. Think blumhouse(another low budget production company) and their massive success and profits on the first paranormal activity. Most big budget companies wouldn’t have funded a venture such as PA, but look at the reward, almost 200 million pure profit.
when was aster not weird?
@@jerkchickenblog Depends on what you mean by weird. Hereditary and Midsommar were great, but they were sold as horror films and were exactly that. I've got no idea what this is going to be. Obviously still going to see it though.
Aster is definitely next level and one of the finest new gen directors. Robert Eggers is another. Born in the 80's!

I came into the movie theater blind. I did not know what to expect with Ari Aster's new movie, but it's that level of uncertainty that drew me in even more. I left the theater in awe and somewhat gut-punched. I had to see this movie again! Already can't wait to get it to own on 4K blu ray!!!
Wait... you said you came into the theater blind. So, I have some questions...
Later, you said you can't wait to see this movie again, and that you left the theater gut-punched. First of all, that's miraculous! This movie actually helped you to see again! We've got to get the word out.
But as far as someone assaulting you in the theater...
This is outrageous! Who would punch a blind person in a theater!?? Is that something blind people have to deal with regularly?? That's horrible!
I mean here you are, (listening very intently to the movie), and probably running back and forth very quickly at the bottom of the screen reading the braille at the bottom, and someone comes along and sucker punches you? Is it because you also got popcorn and were maybe smearing butter across the screen? If so... how did you carry the bucket of popcorn with one hand and read braille with the other, and still have time to reach into the bucket to get some more popcorn? You must have missed a lot of the movie.
Actually...If the movie had audio, why did you need to read the braille at the bottom? Is that because you were afraid you might miss something the actors said? Oh wait... I get it now.
You must have bumped into another person who was blind as well when you were both going back and forth, and THEY gut punched you.
I dunno... maybe I'm just blind, but I don't see it.

You know a movie will be good when the preview does not spoil and leaves you wanting to discover what Beau is afraid of. Bravo
Even more strange is that the short Ari made in 2011 Beau shares some elements but is clearly a different kind of plot entirely
@@brimstonesulfur5013 It's a different kind of plot but based on the same character, he wrote a full-length screenplay centered around him called Beau Is Afraid in 2014 and this is the adaptation of that. Screenplay's been floating around online for a while, it looks like they changed a LOT but I still recognize some key scenes. Based on this trailer, he's definitely taken some of it in a very different direction though, so I have no idea what to expect. Looks more uplifting than the script, but that may just be trailer editing.

Just watched this movie. And oh my fucking god. There are no words. That was one of the craziest fever-dream odyssey style movies I’ve ever seen. Ari Aster absolutely broke out of the style of Hereditary and midsommar. This was its own monster. It had parts that were extremely anxiety provoking, or were hilarious, boring or extremely intriguing. It was almost painful to watch, but afterwards i can’t stop thinking about it (in a good way). I am very impressed.
Read the 1990s comic Eightball. Aster said it was an influence. The 8-ball story in particular would be Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron.
Can’t stop thinking about it either. Bc the themes and allegories don’t hit you until the end. Really brilliant film but a bit too long.

I saw film screening Beau is afraid in IMAX in Manhattan Ari Aster was interviewed by Martin Scorsese after the screening. I will let you know that if you’re battling codependency, this is a great movie for you to see. The main character of Beau battles a lifetime of codependency brought on by his mother, not allowing him to have autonomy in his formative years. He goes on to question all his decisions and abdicate his decision, making to others rendering him as someone who is lost in chaos, castrated by his mothers inability to allow him to choose. he ends up becoming a hypochondriac, unable to feel safe in making choices for himself. Even after his mothers, death beau still continues to drown in his own guilt brought on by his mothers constant reminders that he did not love her enough the way she needed to be loved. This movie drives the point home that for codependent person to learn to be independent, They must take the control of their decisions, cut the chains that bind them to their past and choose life decisions for themselves or die along with their codependent counterpart
Fantastic analysis! I agree. The ending really hit home for me. No one can help you out of this but you.
the movie wasn't so simple. Beau was a victim of his smothering and jealous mother but he was also so unresponsive. He had to learn to act out what he wants or at least explain himself better. He was guilty of what he was judged for even though the judgement ignored the defense of his position... I guess saying that in the end it doesn't matter if others 'made' you the way you are. You have to seek the solution yourself.
His psychiatrist didn't help. Nobody helped... not even Beau.
Phenomenal explanation
I really really want to sound serious with this question but the context of the scene completely nullifies all seriousness, could you please explain your view on the giant p*nis that was supposedly Beau’s dad??
I could put everything together on my own and I truly enjoyed this movie, it became one of my favorites so far! But Im trying to come up with what could that mean…

Lol Aster has not created his own sub-genre.
how is midsommar its own sub genre? pretty standard horror movie really
The kid playing little Joaquin phoenix is insanely well-cast
I have a weird feeling this is going to be a combination of The Truman Show & Misery on steroids. Ari Aster’s first two were nothing short of masterpieces. This will eclipse both. I’m so excited for this movie and I’ve been waiting for this trailer for almost two years now. LFG Beau!
@Scott Alleman nah it's a totally different revelation man. I read the script that leaked and this is probably his most ambitious and exception story
@Scott Alleman it doesn’t at all in my opinion. more like a fever dream. plus i don’t think that ari aster is gonna really give us much through his trailer, we’ll just have to wait and see :)
With a dash of wizard of oz for good measure
Nope
its much more like mother!, with almost a road trip type script

This is Walter Mitty.
Actual Movie:
Some Franz Kafka shit.
I simply want more movies from Ari Aster !!
As chaotic as this trailer is, it fills me with peace. I can’t explain why. The ending of the trailer always gives me goosebumps

Probably my favourite trailer, love how it's edited, doesn't give away much, and the music goes really well with it.
Hopefully like with the other aster films, this film gets released outside America at the same time as America. Seeing that a24 has the habit of releasing their films outside America pretty late.
0:25- to those that have seen this movie already, I think that this company is listed as a producer for the film, makes for a pretty great meta joke about who is making this movie and why
Ari Aster + Joaquin Phoenix = An unforgettable experience

Hii
The biggest thing about Joaquin's movies is that viscerally you feel that each character he plays is simply a true expression or extension of himself. It's a bit sad to me but I thank him in the long run for his thespian talent and the sacrifices he has made for all of us.
Yes I agree, he is an extraordinary actor who always, to me, has a hint of heartbreak and sadness.

This film is an instant classic. Thank you Ari Aster for being so inventive and symbolic with your messaging. This film was incredibly original.
This looks like a positively gorgeous insane combination of horror humor heart and an utterly bonkers tornado of weirdness. Ari just keeps getting better and better
This is the best description of this trailer for me lol
"bonkers tornado of weirdness" Thank you for that
I don't really get the praise A24 gets. They aren't perfect. They have a lot of hits and misses. Either you finish watching feeling satisfied by how unique and complete the experience was or unsatisfied by how nonsensical and incomplete the story was.
@@randomvideoboy1 are you putting out anything better??
He who just even attempts great films, is to be given some type of automatic respect. I oft times fear we have achieved our zenith in some of our art forms.
Even an Aster trailer has more love, art and awesomeness packed into it than 97% of what comes out of Hollywood these days.
This is a Hollywood film, isn't it?
@ln+3rna1hàbän3r0s nah. A24 are an independent entertainment company based in NYC, so they're currently free from Hollywood's shackles. I have this awful feeling some giant Hollywood company will try and acquire them soon though because they keep throwing out banging films.
Let me guess, were you born in the wrong generation too?
@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme You know what they mean.
@@whiskii oh I see. So people running independent films aren't there to make money and appeal to the masses, right? They're entirely different people with pure motivations?
This was handsdown the weirdest movie I have ever seen. I loved every single moment. What a ride. I never saw what was coming next.
You don't see Donnie Darko, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet...?
@usedjellyfish Dude, if you like weird and different, you're in for a treat. Check out any of Ari's other flicks... midsommar, hereditary., etc.
But here are some other fine examples of otherworldly, weird, and downright hypnotizing movies:
Vivarium, Strawberry Mansion, Mad God, Infinity pool, That evening sun, Brazil, The Civil Dead, Dark City, Get Out, Nope, Greener Grass, Tank Girl, Turbo Kid, 1984...
...or really ANYTHING by directors Lynch, Cronenberg, Peele and Gilliam. (All part of the "big 5" in my opinion when it comes to very different but fascinating movies, which of course also includes Ari Aster in that 5).
M Night Shyamalan as a director is hit or miss too (he could technically fall into this group as well), but I don't think his movies are "quite" as mesmerizing and interesting as the others I just mentioned.
There's many more great examples if you go down the rabbit hole. (Like the other commenter said - Erasurehead being one similar to a terrifying fever dream).
Acabei de sair do cinema e SIM! O filme é perfeito! Uma experiência sensorial e única… Vá de cabeça aberta e apenas aproveite a viagem!

This was actually a really good trailer, showed a lot of the chaos that’s about to unfold without actually revealing too much.

They have only produced 13 good movies I think. The others are either just brought at festivals they then distribute
They should do House of Leaves next! Its an almost impossible book to adapt but if anyone can they could
I can't believe I am saying this but this is probably my favorite Ari Aster film so far, Hereditary was great, Midsommar was pretty good but Beau is Afraid is on whole another level. What a film, this is cinema.

After the success of “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”, I wouldn’t be surprised to see “Beau Is Afraid” reach that summit, especially with Joaquin Phoenix starring in a wacky, self-imploding, & an artistic motion picture masterpiece with Ari Aster to direct
If I know Ari Aster, I'm cautious to call this wacky and self-imploding. I was one of the dumbasses who thought Midsommar would be a romance.
I would like to say that this feature will be something else, something special. Right from the first mention of this movie it captured people, Ari has that special eye for greatness as per the first two features they were great artworks really entertaining. But truly captivating us with such talent like Joaquin that is a statement in itself, just from how he plays out in the trailer it is nothing more than magical watching him on screen truly gifted. I cant wait to experience this masterpiece......
Ari Aster and Joaquein Phoenix...an atomic bomb. Impossible not to see it.
Ari is one of the best filmmakers to come up over the past 10 years, so hyped for another amazing movie from him👍

I feel like ari aster is going to be such an inspiration to future writers/directors because of his creativity..he has a rare talent
The most ambitious and challenging film of the year. I loved it. Let Ali Aster make more movies. And Joaquin's performance was phenomenal.
this movie is without a doubt a massively complex and unconventional, yet realistic, take on multiple different interlinking themes such as a mothers influence on her children’s later life and how their whole perception of the world can be shaped by this. i for one absolutely adored this movie, however i can understand why it won’t be for everyone. but that’s ari aster, and once you understand his vision and how he’s a truly unique filmmaker it’s hard not to respect what he’s doing.
this won’t be for everyone, this isn’t a massive hollywood blockbuster that critics will label as a ‘must see’ and give 10/10 reviews to. however i can’t thank a24 enough for allowing these movies to be made for people like myself who have grown bored of conventional horror movies.
i loved this movie.
The people that has been following ari's career knows that this tráiler has a lot of references of his earliest works and it makes me so exited bc you can see that this movie is probably one of his most personal works yet.
Indeed, a tráiler. Or a træíleur as they say on the Continent.

Huh?
The last time I had that feeling was when I saw the trailer for Everything, everywhere all at once. And that movie was a total jackpot
This is not an entertainment movie. This is the author's statement on the archetype of the devouring mother. Anyone who cannot get out of their mother's overprotection and get rid of guilt is a must-see.
The trailer is way more uplifting than the movie itself 😂
They have over 50 movies (made by them), a company that started out in 2012 by distributing independent movies, now they’ve brought us masterpieces like “Midsommar”, “The Lighthouse”, “Men”, “Hereditary”, “It Comes At Night”, “Ex Machina” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, i love A24, i hope they’ll get the recognition that they truly deserve.
