Johnny could be teaching Stony some English words, and when he speaks to Ella he THINKS he's saying English words, but he's actually just speaking Mandarin with an accent. Or he has misremembered the words and he's accidentally saying something else that Ella believes is Mandarin. I think this is common among children learning to speak another language.
