Prepping Plumbing Pipe for Industrial Decor- Curtain Rods Build

- In this video I delve deep into stripping plumbing parts down to bare metal so they can be refinished to be used in architectural features for an industrial look. I needed curtains so I commissioned a friend of mine to sew some up out of canvas drop cloths and do a splatter paint design. I made the curtain rods out of 1/2” black iron plumbing pipe, keeping with the industrial look of our space.

I would have just painted them with a oil-based enamel low-gloss paint.

I love black iron piping ! I make lighting projects for people and curtain rods . but the safety police will bust you for not wearing latex gloves using Acetone . It causes kidney damage ! just saying.

I would have to say you nailed it with the video and curtains, was so interesting and the end result was just perfect for your place. Love how eclectic your home is, it all works together even though its all different it all works and has a wonderful feel to it. Your knowledge and the tools you have is amazing and the projects your're achieving are awesome, I especially loved your foam carving tree tutorial as well. You're almost at 1000 subscribers and something tells me your channel will grow very well, you mentioned in one of your earlier videos that you weren't talking to the camera as you were trying to get used to to it, you have achieved that, very natural. What part is used making it so you can "open" the rod to put the curtain on?
It’s called a union.
$300 for a room your size isn't bad, some places will charge $200 per window, lol.

I made it. I like to do a lot of lighting, I guess I should do a video about that at some point.
Yes, do a video on how to make that lamp. I hope your go a little slower, in this video I had to slow down the playback to .25 to see what the end pieces were and the center pierces. Love the finished product.

How much did you wind up spending on the entire endeavor?
It was about $250 for the parts and another $45 or so for the chemicals and shellac. To be clear it isn’t absolutely necessary to do all of those steps. For a smaller project you could get it clean enough with acetone and a lot of scrubbing. In an application where the finish can be less clean and smooth like shelf supports some people just clean it and then coat it with paste wax. Because my fabric curtains are sliding back and forth on it every day I went the extra mile.

@@Chemical14 Thanks for this information. I’m doing floor to ceiling curtains in my magic room and I really just want to make sure the curtains don’t get ruined from the oil coating from the pipes. My thought was to by some black plastic curtain rod tubing that comes in 5’ lengths just to save a step since most of the time the curtains will be closed covering the bookcase and a wall. I would put cheap black duct tape on the connectors. What do you think?

@@Chemical14 Literally just had somebody come by. I showed them your video and the project site and they said they can do it for $400. I think that's a fair price, no? It's about 37 feet in length.

Sir, do you know how much acetone you're absorbing through your skin, then putting toxins into your body?
I normally wear disposable gloves but they were hard to come by due to the pandemic. Your concern is overstated however. Acetone is produced naturally by your body in the breakdown of fat and is always present in your body. In every breath you exhale acetone. It can be dangerous in high concentrations if inhaled or swallowed though.
