I have only been hooping for a few weeks and you have taught me so much! I just wanted to reach out and say thank you because I really appreciate your approach to teaching. You definitely have been a huge part of my hoop education!
I was having the hardest time getting stuck at the part where you have to turn your hand and I didn't know what to do until you slowed this down in slo mo so I can see exactly what to do and when. Somehow I was flipping the hoop at that part even though I was getting it up it wasn't into lasso. Thanks! Now I got it!
I can do it! I've been struggling for weeks, but as pharmycat said, after seeing your slow motion and close ups I nailed it in 3 minutes. Eager to have a look at your other tutorials. Thanks! :)
I just managed to do this today thanks to your video! I have hit myself in the face too many times to mention but I got there in the end. Now to work on making it look effortless! Thanks!
Thank you! This is extremely clear, articulated well, the slow motion really helped a lot & you answered my question about that awkward position I kept getting myself into when trying to transfer into lasso position above my head. Everything a beginner would hope for in a tutorial video! Will come back once I've practiced & got the trick down!
easy enough ! :) love your instruction, I learn best from the slow motion after all is said and done.. this took me no time at all to do, I was very surprised ! I cant wait to learn more, thank you for your videos !
Thanks for sharing. What size of hoop you are using? This is one of those tricks where your hoop size can make all the difference. I recommend using a larger sized hoop for this one.
i found it really helpful if I actually grab the hoop to lift it up. i found that it helps keep the hoop horizontal. i've been hooping for 3 days and figuring that out was like a light bulb turning on!
Hi Jon! I love your tutorials, they break things down nice and simply... On the part where I am leading with my elbow, before lifting straight up, my hoop flips down and hits my leg :-/ what could I be doing wrong?
Ducking! Brilliant! This move was frustrating me so much until I tried that. Now I don't have to duck anymore, but ducking at first somehow made me understand the movement needed. Thank you so much. =)
Thank you for this video! I have been hula hooping all my life for fun, but just this week realized all the cool tricks I could be doing with my hoops (yes, I have multiple hoops, even just for regular hooping-- there are so many wonderful colors!). I tried to use an expertvillage video to learn this trick, but they didn't show how to twist your hand around into lasso. Your slow motion part also helped tremendously! I was able to get this trick within a few tries, even with my little 35 inch water hoop!
@hoopsmiles I've kinda got it, but need more practice for it to work smoothly :) but I do have problem doing other tricks probably because my hoop is of a smaller diameter. Thanks for your suggestion! I'll get another hoop now :D
I am lifting the hoop up using my right hand. The hoop is always smacking me in the left ear (and trust me, that really really hurts!) Do I just need to pull my hand further out to the left, away from my body? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for your help, your tutorials are wonderful!
Hi.. thanks for posting a slow-motion video. it's really helpful. :) but i'm not getting one thing- as soon as i grab the loop and pull it up, it becomes vertical and hence unable to spin. it's not at all horizontal like i see in the videos. what am i doing wrong?!
Actually, if I remember correctly, the first time I hooped, I don't know if I could keep it up very long. I think in the beginning it's normal to over exaggerate your body movement, sometimes flailing your body every which way. In the long run, overexertion is not necessary to keep the hoop up. I'd say one of the keys to hooping is the size of your hoop, which in some cases may be more important than footing.
For some reason this trick is blowing my mind. I. can. not. do. it. I always hit myself with my hoop at the very end and throw the whole thing off. Thanks for the slow-motion, I think it will help to watch and practice the motions.
what's the diameter size of hoop you are using? Sometimes using a larger sized hoop can make all the difference when performing this move for the first time.
@FoxyTreeHugger Let me think about that. I'm glad you like the song. Thanks. This song was born during an era of my music making when I was obsessed with taking sounds I recorded indoors and outdoors, such as the bird sounds in the song, and incorperating them in my beats. If you hear the sound of an owl in the song, that is really an owl that I recorded one night outside where I was living at the time, which is one of my most favorite sounds I've ever recorded.
Do you have any tips for a second-hand corkscrew? I can bring it down, and I can start to bring it up, but I'm having a hard time getting the hoop to go around my thumb before making contact with my hand again. I just can't seem to get my hand in the right position.
@Heifzilla I guess you actually answered my question in the video. I just think that my hoop is so heavy that it ends up torquing my wrists and then I lose control of it.
1st of all Im new to your channel and hooping. Thank you sooooooooooo much for these. Omg. So helpful even 11year later. You were so smol😭🤗 compared to now. Yaaaas evolution #hoopgawd 🤎💗🤎💗🤎💗🤎💗
hello! i love your videos but i cant seem to get this one :(. my problem is keeping the hoop up on my waist... especially when i put my hand at the lower of my back and try to lift. i am 5'7 and about 140 lbs. The current hoop that i am using is 38" and 1.4 lbs. Is this not the proper hoop i should be using? Do you think that a poly pro would be easier? xoxo thanks so much looking forward to your response!!
How many times did you whack yourself in the head when you started to try this lift? Becuse I think I have a concussion now :) Also, I have a really big, really heavy hoop. I know people do these tricks with these larger hoops, but is it better to have a smaller, lighter hoop?
@tanz0holic I recomend using a hoop with a much wider diameter, such as a 40 inch diameter hoop. That should make the lift up much easier. Sometimes with my students, if that doesn't work, I have a giant hoop that's 5 feet in diameter for people to do this trick. Wider hoops are a lot easier to do this trick with. A 26 inch hoop is actually a very advanced sized hoop.
@Rainwhiskerr yes you may ask for help. Well without being able to see footage of you hooping, have you ever tried this trick with a larger hoop, like 50 to 60 inches in diameter? If not, I recommend trying a larger diameter hoop. If that is easier, as you get better, you can move back to your 40 inch hoop
so today i bought a hoop from walmart. it has a big mechanical thing for the lights in it. but thats the only hoop i have. and i cant do it. do i need to buy a different one or is there a way to do this?
if people are struggling with this, I'd say people can also lift the hoop with their right hand in front of their body, instead of lifting the hoop with their left behind their back. However, just because it is a challenge, I wouldn't avoid doing it. Do you have a hoop that's over 5 feet in diameter? If someone can't do this trick on their left hand, I'd recommend letting them use a larger hoop to see if they can do it. It's amazing what a 5 foot diameter hoop can do. Thanks for asking :)
Some of my students are finding this hard as they hoop right so have to take of with their left hand but are right handed and seem to get in a muddle. Any suggestions :)
When I transfer from the grab and begin pulling it up it not only hurts my wrist but the awkward position always messes me up and it doesn't look right
Could I ask for help? Two issues. 1) The hoop turns vertically and forces my head into my arm- like at 1:02, but over my head. I get to the part where I'm supposed to lift straight up, but the hoop is already too far. 2) I can sometimes get the hoop horizontally over my head, but I can't seem to transfer it to lasso. Like, it'll be in my hand, but my hand is not in a position to be able to keep it going. I can do this going downwards, however. My hoop is 3/4" thick and 40 inches in diameter.
I cannot seem to do this blooming trick. I think I have managed it once. I seem to get all in a tangle and cant get it up over my head. I think I might try ducking see if that helps.
I have tried too many times but m not able to lift the Hoola Hoop up. ☹️ Whenever I try inserting my hand while ring moving, the ring falls down instead of getting lifted up.. 😢
Not quite sure what part of the trick you are having trouble at, are you referring to the part where you grab the hoop on your back? Or are you talking about once you have already lifted the hoop?
i just got my hoop yesterday and i can keep it up for maybe 6-7 rotations max. i think im movong more with my waist than just my hips so i feel solly, like im just humping the air lol. did it take anyone else a while to get the ffooting down or right or am i just not unnderstanding
@xomcknightxo Yes, hoops with weights that move around inside the hoop can throw off the balance of the hoop, which may make a difference in performing this trick. However, the difference might not be as significant for this trick as it is for others.
So my friend told me to use my right hand and I hoop to the right and I have been successful but haven't done it perfectly but when I try with my left hand like you say I can't avoid my face! Help!
As I do this it seems to get stuck. I'll be lifting it up but it falls on my back and gets stuck. I tried it Idk how many times but still can't get it all the way up. So I tried it in front but the it slow down the vortex cause I can't bring it up right. Any idea of what to do?
I think the tubing size for that hoop is a 1/2 inch. I'm not sure what the diameter size is. Why do you ask? Are you looking to make/get a hoop? I have a beginner hoop recommendations video on my channel if you are looking for a beginner sized hoop.
@pharmycat Thank you so much for the feed back!! I'm glad I could help. Yeah that lift up into lasso can be challenging at first. It's very rewarding to know this video made a difference for you. When I watch tutorials sometimes I think, I wish I could see that in slow motion. I'm glad the slow motion is helpful. Feel free to continue telling me about your hooping experiecne. I would love to hear!!
@mizzfitroses I just looked at the video again, and I could get that the backdrop does look a little off. No I didn't do this on a green screen. It might have something to do with my cheaper camera I was using at the time.
@DMSgirlJENNIFER: You're kidding, rite? You might be too young to remember defense tackle and NFL champion Roosevelt Grier, one of the "Fearsome Foursome" for the LA Rams. Shortly after he retired from football, he wrote a couple of needlepoint books. So freakin' cool. Raise your consciousness, girl! And THANK YOU, hoopsmiles! This tutorial is way better than Christabel's.
Hi hoopsmiles:) I just started hooping yesterday and I have a 40 in. diameter hoop...my problem with this trick is when you have to grab the hoop behind your back. I can move the hoop round n round ok, but when I try to grab the hoop, it just falls....anyone know the trick?
That sounds unfortunate. Can you spin the hoop over your hand as it is pressed up against your back? Sometimes before grabbing the hoop, it can take getting comfortable with the hoop spinning over your hand on your back.
ah ok i was dragging not lifting...2 more attempts and I got it!!! HORRAY!!! No morw bruises...for now :-) Now to get in back on the waist, Thanks Jon!!!
I recommend watching my video on trying different sized hoops, which is in the video response section of this video. It could be helpful in getting this trick.
I just can't get this >:[ ! Is it possible my hoop is too heavy? Like you said in the video, my arm gets stuck at that one position when my arm is crossed across my face.
It is possible. The equipment (your hoop) you use to hoop with is critical to the hooping experience. Even a fraction of a pound can make a difference in the comfort and ease of your hoop. What size of hoop do you use?
I keep hitting myself in the ear! And yes it hurts. But I can do it now. Like half the time. It's only my first day hooping and I figured out how to do lasso to waist on my own. Waist to lasso is much harder.
I only started hooping yesterday and I can already do this trick. You are a great teacher!! Thanks for the vids. You rock
Thanks again :)
Tips on keeping the hoop horizontal? I can do this trick, but I just can't seem to perform it with a steady flow
I have only been hooping for a few weeks and you have taught me so much! I just wanted to reach out and say thank you because I really appreciate your approach to teaching. You definitely have been a huge part of my hoop education!
I just started hooping on Saturday, and I've looked at several tutorials to try to learn the vortex. I just did it for the first time, thanks to Jon!
This is definitely the best tutorial for this move! Great slow down effects too. Very useful :D
This is the most detailed tutorial I've seen on what happens with the hand as it comes above the head, I can't wait to try this out in the morning!
Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful
This was great for me to practice with, thanks with the helpful detailed instructions!
I bought a hula hoop at Target today and this is the first trick I learned. Thanks!
I was having the hardest time getting stuck at the part where you have to turn your hand and I didn't know what to do until you slowed this down in slo mo so I can see exactly what to do and when. Extremely helpful, especially appreciated the slow mo and tips. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you for your amazing tutorials. I'm only two days into hooping and I've got this trick thanks to you. ❤❤ all the way from Ireland 🇮🇪🍀
Wonderful! Wow you got that fast!
This video has helped me a lot in learning vortex. The slow motions made things easier. Thx 😁😃
Hi! Your video is really clear!! Your hoop looks so small compared to mine! What kind is yours?
I just managed to do this today thanks to your video! I have hit myself in the face too many times to mention but I got there in the end. Now to work on making it look effortless! Thanks!
Thank you I learn a lot from your tutorials you can see my progress in 5 months doing handstands with my hula hoop. Aloha from Hawaii!
Thank you! This is extremely clear, articulated well, the slow motion really helped a lot & you answered my question about that awkward position I kept getting myself into when trying to transfer into lasso position above my head. Thank you so much - this is the best tutorial I've seen on this trick!!!
Hi Jon!
I love your tutorials, they break things down nice and simply...
On the part where I am leading with my elbow, before lifting straight up, my hoop flips down and hits my leg :-/ what could I be doing wrong?
Oh, simply the best tutorials
thank you so much this video was brilliant, just spent the last 2 hours getting this right :)
LOVE THE SLOW MO !! very helpful, one love!
I just wanted to thank you for all your very helpful, well made videos. And that funny song about hooping I like to show my friends1 Keep it up!
I started hooping yesterday and I can do this like 1/10 times xD
Your tutorial is awesome.
Right on. How is the hooping going?
i love your videos, their extremely thorough, yet concise.
(;
Omg I've been hooping for one year and could never do it, now I can, great tutorial 🤩🌸
Thats awesome!
Ducking! Brilliant! This move was frustrating me so much until I tried that. Now I don't have to duck anymore, but ducking at first somehow made me understand the movement needed. Thank you so much. =)

@hoopsmiles you're the best! Got it on the 3rd try!
@hoopsmiles I've kinda got it, but need more practice for it to work smoothly :) but I do have problem doing other tricks probably because my hoop is of a smaller diameter.
Thanks for your suggestion! I'll get another hoop now :D
Yay, I finally did this trick without hitting myself in the head!! The slow mo is super helpful!! Thank you! :)
Groovy :-)
Thank you so much for the video. The slow motion really helped! ^_^
This was perfect! I went out and tried it right away and got it after just a few tries (only spinning to the left though). So much fun!
Fantastic! This move can be one of the more fun beginner moves out there.
Hi.. thanks for posting a slow-motion video. it's really helpful. :) but i'm not getting one thing- as soon as i grab the loop and pull it up, it becomes vertical and hence unable to spin. it's not at all horizontal like i see in the videos. what am i doing wrong?!

Thank you for breaking It down in slo mo that helps so much

Is there any way we could get this song from you? I love it.

Hello, wondering what size piping is used for this hoop? What psi and tube diameter? Thank you!

@tanz0holic What is the diameter size of your hoop?
I am having such a hard time with this! You make it look so easy I just can't get it

As I do this it seems to get stuck. I'll be lifting it up but it falls on my back and gets stuck. I tried it Idk how many times but still can't get it all the way up. So I tried it in front but the it slow down the vortex cause I can't bring it up right. Any idea of what to do?

is this in BC Canada?
Your the best!! Got it!!! 👋👋👋
Thanks!

Thank you so much for the feed back!!
Rotating your hula hoop left to right is correct ?
Not sure if I follow exactly your question, but you can spin the hoop either way is fine.
what makes this trick easier? i'm using the largest hoop for a beginner and i can not seem to get this trick down.. -____-
is he standing in front of a green screen? for some reason the area around where is standing looks off.
@mizzfitroses I just looked at the video again, and I could get that the backdrop does look a little off. No I didn't do this on a green screen. It might have something to do with my cheaper camera I was using at the time.
@DMSgirlJENNIFER: You're kidding, rite?

Thanks. You are welcome :)
@DMSgirlJENNIFER Why not?
Gave myself a bloody nose trying this lmao
I recommend watching my video on trying different sized hoops, which is in the video response section of this video. It could be helpful in getting this trick.
I just can't get this >:[ ! Is it possible my hoop is too heavy? Like you said in the video, my arm gets stuck at that one position when my arm is crossed across my face.
