Why not read what it was like living and working with him 1968 to 1971? It's my story, of course, from that lucky day I met Frank in London and ended up with nine other people at the log cabin and was fortunate to have that extraordinary experience. 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa.'
Something changed around the Them or Us period. Can't put my finger on it, but it wasn't the same after that. But the man was a true genius, there's absolutely no doubt about it. An incredible artist the likes of which I doubt we're going to see again.

But from what I've read he intended his 1984 tour to be his last and was thinking of hanging up touring after 1982 (tired of dealing with unruly fans, musicians unions, people not playing his stuff correctly, blah blah) as he said here. I think he did 1984 as way to generate money and didn't particularly want to do it (which may be why he seems so grouchy in many of his 1984 interviews), so I've read. Funny enough he included a lot of 1984 stuff on subsequent albums so the tour must've been successful in his mind. Of course after the 1988 debacle he did swear off touring (and his illness didn't help). I don't know if you had any contact with Zappa during this time but that's my understanding of the events around the 1984 tour.
If you see the unedited version the interviewer asks Zappa to say "Hello, America. I'm coming to germany" to use for an intro. Zappa then instead says "Hello G.I..." He instantly made it into a joke about World War 2!
"Hello.....I'm coming to Germany." I was surprised how creepy that was....he's having fun here, but it's the look in his eyes. Excellent interview, tho.
