She's an actual amazing person that raised in the wrong way. No matter what the reason, telling someone they're not special since young would eventually took heavy damage on their psychology. The fact that no one was with her to supported her getting through it, while all her sense and emotion was dampened by drugs, she was actually forced to live a dull unhappy life.
It’s funny how the siblings all blame Vanya or their dad or literally everyone else for the apocalypse, and yet their exclusion of her from the family and treating her as if she were lower than them was what made her mentally unsound and easily manipulated.
They were the ones who caused the apocalypse.
It's funny how Vanya blames literally everyone else for her 'exclusion' from the family when Diego was the only one who wanted her excluded after she wrote a book about them without asking first.

It’s the amazing actor that really brings her to life
I don’t understand why Vanya is hated. It isn’t her fault that she was raised the wrong way. It wasn’t her fault that she was lied to her whole life. When she was young, she couldn’t play with the rest because of her power. It’s the dad you should blame, not Vanya. Anger is sometimes uncontrollable and you can’t blame her for that. Also, no one really cares or understood her except for Allison, who actually tried. She was like an outcast, and she just couldn’t hold it in anymore. She’s an actual softie and just wanted to be like the others
I know people keep talking about how she's so full of herself at the end and she shouldn't have reacted the way she did but I just don't get that it's like she's been a side character her entire life and never really felt loved and so when she thinks that Leonard really likes her she obviously wants to try and cling to that. The years upon years of awful treatment built up and she was confused and distraught and with powers she never learned to control and it all just exploded all at once
klaus also understood it to vanya understood it much more than alison because both suffered in their childhood because of their father and no one took them seriously they were also discovering new powers that they did not know they had

@@cy.513 he did, when Luther locked her up you can tell he cared. Vanya didn't try to be a better sibling. When he was kidnapped did she look for him? No. I'm not hating on Vanya tho, I love her. Just don't comment things on who suffered more or who is better.

A really great character in a unique show. Your multifandom really captured her character.
Leonard was so toxic and abusive towards Vanya.
at the end maybe, but during he wasn't at all. The guy never lost his temper until he did at the very end, and it caused him to get himself killed. He did a lot for her, terrible stuff, but it wasn't abusive torwards *her* but to others.
I'm honestly glad he came into her life. If it weren't for him Vanya wouldn't know she had powers.

Honestly tho, Leonard coming into her life is probably the best thing that's ever happened to her.
But he's still awful nonetheless.

Seven is my favorite and lucky number since i were a child, and i love this character. I can't believe Vanya has the same life like me, I'm glad I know The Umbrella Academy. My family ever said that they don't like me, I'm not like them, I'm different they say. They love my sibling, i often forgotten. I always feel I'm not special too. And when I can't hold my anger or sadness, I'm angry. But they always blame me for my anger
Tbh, ever since the Umbrella Academy came out and I first saw it, from the get-go, Vanya was my favorite character and still is, its that her so-called siblings and so-called dad put her through crap and hell, she deserves more, so much more man
I don’t care about what Vanya had done even being the cause of the apocalypse; her siblings all bear some responsibility for that, Luther especially for locking her up again like their father did and restarting her trauma which made her lose control and almost destroy the world, but Klaus also bears quite a bit of responsibility (he’s my favourite and still is despite this) because he threw their father’s journal in the dumpster and Leonard/Howard found it and read everything he’d written about them, especially Vanya and then manipulated her to unlock her powers, it was wrong of him but at least he wanted Vanya to learn the truth and find out she was unique and special like all of her siblings are.
I do of course feel bad that she almost killed Allison, and that she killed Pogo, but that wouldn’t have happened if they had all owed her their love and let her be their sister and family like she’s always been to them. Pogo knew everything and with their father gone why didn’t he tell Vanya the truth and try to help her, he was certainly a much better father figure for them than their so-called father Reginald Hargreeves. They all owe her everything in season 2, what Five said at the end when they time travelled together about fixing Vanya, I hope they do that, but I’d prefer if that means helping her to control and learn to master powers and be loved like she deserves to be.

Vanya's character is my most favorite - the rest are kinda thrashy for me XD. Vanya's character is what ordinary people can relate to...especially if those close to you repeatedly kept calling you "you're nothing special".
My most favourite character from TUA, she is so special not only in the show but one of the best fictional characters i had the pleasure to know , this fan video is AMAZING!!!!

I feel Vanya for real. Sometimes I have felt left out of things and felt really sad and angry about it. Her character just relates to me on a personal level. She’s literally my fav
I love Alison, and when that episode ended at their argument. I was super heartbroken. She truly is the only person who has Vanyas best interest at heart.
Alison was trying to reconnect with her family and it was sad to see that lead to her getting seriously hurt.
Yeah it was sad to see that happened. But she shouldn't have tried to use her power on Vanya again.
This made me appreciate Vanya even more. 😭
She isn't evil. She's just a victim of loneliness and sadness. But she always will be the bomb.
How can someone hate Vanya? She's my favourite character and Ellen Page delivers the role amazingly.
If the Incredibles are proof that the Fantastic Four can be done well on-screen, then I think The Umbrella Academy is proof that Dark Phoenix can be done well. Seriously, it's uncanny how many parallels there are (the psychological repression by a parental figure, the godlike power surge, the manipulative villain, and the team being divided over what to do with her, to name a few).
But on top of that, this show also has the strengths of that storyline (Vanya's visual psychological torment, and how it naturally progresses, well-established characters and dynamics, and clear factors contributing to the plot, to name a few again).
I can't say this with absolute certainty, since Fox's second attempt at the Dark Phoenix Saga has yet to be released. But if the trailers are any indication (Mystique's death didn't have nearly the same impact on me as Pogo), I'm expecting something entertaining but disappointing. (though I hope I'm wrong)

Something that I find interesting is that people always tell you that they love you and that they will care of you when you are having a mental breakdown. Yet when everything is done, they just walk away like nothing happened. And at some point “I love you” and “ I will care of you” become meaningless word.
Some people don't understand Vanya or her emotional trauma and struggle bc they never had to experience something like it in their childhood which I'm really happy about bc y'all can't even imagine what if feels like to be not loved or feel like nobody cares about you.
many people love Vanya bc they understand her. but they don’t understand me even if i can relate to her. no one deserves hate.

I came back to this after watching season 3 n the fact that everyone still doesnt listen to vanya(viktor now) belittles, manipulates and still tries to pin everything on her gets me.

The truth is that at the beginning she was the victim and deserved revenge, but it happened later with Alison, but Alison didn't say good things either, but she was aware that she was wrong.

It feels like there are two camps of people: those who see Vanya causing multiple apocalypses and go, "It's okay, you're doing your best, sweetie," and the other group who hates her. I'm wondering if it's like @anna. says below about people who know what being excluded feels like, vs those who don't. I loved all the characters, but dang did i really resonate with Vanya. Nothing she does is "right," but her choices are 100% understandable. #StandWithVanya

i feel like allison was such shitty sister bc she grew up never knowing what vanya felt or thought because she was seen as special the only girl in the family that got favorited and was never judged or discriminated i understand what vanya went through, i would feel the same allison degrading vanya for her "mistakes" is just unfair she never had the same treatment and adulting as allison

I gave up watching this show. I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't.
But it looks like it got really good.
Can someone please explain what's going on? How did she not realise she had powers before? How did she kill Alison and then Alison killed a white version of her?

Her father tried training her and found that emotional triggers made her powers instable, so he created a medication to supress her powers, and as a failsafe persuaded Allison in "rumor"ing Vanya to forget she had powers.
