I was in high school when it came out and yes "I'm Rick James, bitch" was heard everywhere. In my friend circle we also said "Fuck yo couch" instead of saying I don't care/I don't give a fuck. To this day I still say "Fuck yo couch" occasionally instead of IDGAF.

2 Years on but just an FYI: according to one of Charlie Murphy's stand up sets - the whole reason Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories became a segment, was because he'd be telling Chappelle and the people on the show these actual stories. And they'd all be laughing, hard. Then after a particular story Chappelle said: "Hey, we should make this into a sketch". Charlie's initial reaction was: "Sketch? Motherf***er this is my life, the f*** you mean a 'sketch'?!" Then Chappelle helped him flesh it out and Charlie Murphy realised: "My life is a sketch"

Unfortunately there is a third part to this Charlie Murphy story about Rick James in the China Club, but it isn't in this youtube video.
I looked up the CHina Club on google. It was a very popular bar and club in NYC but it mostly was popular with alot of musiciains who lived in NYC. They had a stage and many famous groups performed there in the 1980s fir free and would collabaerate and write music with other famous musicians there. Rick James was good friends with the owner and was a regular there
Fun fact- Rick James and Neil Young were once in a band together and even shared an apartment if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah i had heard of Princes basketball prowest in Jr High and High School prior to this skit coming out.
When the rick james thing came out you couldn't got out in public is the US for like a year without hearing "i'm rick james, bitch" at least once. And the Lil John thing. Oh god, the Lil John thing. I'm sitting in a Denny's at 2 am and from across the restauraunt i hear "What?!" And for the next minute it was literally almost everyone there yelling that and "OK!" Or "Yeeeeaah!" Back and forth.

When this come out I was a freshman in high school. I can reassure you everyone in America was saying “ I’m Rick James bish” and “F yo couch” for at least two years.
Used to have the DVDs of Chappelle's Show. I think I'm right. But Dave in the commentary said. When he first came to California he stayed at such and such hotel in Hollywood. I don't remember the name. He goes on to say. That he would hang out at the hotel bar. And get this. Slash, Vern Troyer, and Rick James would periodically go to this bar to drink and hang. He got to meet all three and his impression of Rick James was from hanging out with him at this bar. Dave goes on to tell how Vern Troyer told the group he got cast on Austin Powers to play his character mini me. If that gives you a time line.

To be fair to Rick James, when he said he wouldn't grind his muddy boots into somebody's couch, then instantly said he remembered grinding his feet in Eddie Murphy's couch, if you watch his entire interview you understand his meaning. He was clarifying he wouldn't grind his muddy boots in people's couches, but made an exception for Eddie Murphy's couch, because Eddie could afford it.
Charlie Murphy got his a$$ whooped by Prince in high heels on the basketball court & he also got to fight with Rick James and make up with him. Yeeeah, he was blessed. RIP Charlie! one of the best story tellers of all time!

I was “in university” as you guys say and I don’t curse usually, but I would turn to someone and say, I’m Rick James, and they’d finish the sentence. It was on graffiti. It was on the classroom whiteboards before class started. “Cocaines a helluva drug” was written in a lot of places, too. I didn’t know that was a Rick James quote. People would give their names as Rick James at restaurants. It was like an ongoing, universal joke.
I found out when Rick James died that he cocained his way through his fortune until he died. He did some illegal strange things and eventually died of complications from his cocaine use.

I know this was weird for Englishme , same as peak comedy in the UK is odd for Americans. But this skit right here (the entire thing) is timeless and one of the best ever! Chappelle's Show was the best comed6show of the early 2000's it's a shame it only lasted 3 seasons. Key and Peele are similar, but it is nothing close to CS. He did the best skits and is still one of the best comedians alive. He doesn't have to do crazy stuff like use props or act eccentric. He can just tell a story and it's hilarious! He's notoriously smart and wasn't even raised in the "hood", he just knows different demographics mannerisms and tells his stories well. Chappelle's Show was great and I miss it, wish he would go back to it because they were true and hilarious. But now, the world has gone so "politically correct" it wouldn't be allowed unless it was on some streaming service. My favorite comedians of all time! Shane Gillis is working his way up there with me. He's hilarious as well.
