2018 elections are the "mid term" elections in the States. In Congress the House Members serves 2 year terms( Senators serve for 6 years).
So when a President goes into his/her(theoretically) 2nd year as President, the House can be flipped either Republican or Democrat depending on how well the President's Party has done in the first couple years of their term.

To adress your question.. 2016 was when trump ran.. he took over in jan 2017. But we have midterm elections for the house and Senate which would fall on 2018. Being Congress is an equal branch to potus.. the 2018 elections were just as important

A lot of people don't like it, but the electoral college is necessary. Some businessman on wall street should not be making decisions for a farmer in kansas, and vice versa. The electoral college balances the power of votes between heavily populated areas and sparsely populated areas. Without it, California and New York City would select every president.
Just eliminate the Electoral Vote!

The electoral college system gives power to residents in less populous states, who would otherwise have pretty much no voting power at all if simple majority vote determined the results. The states with the most population would decide every election otherwise, which is not fair. Example, Iowa produces the 2nd most food out of all 50 states, however they are only 31st by population. You think it's fair to say the state who produces the 2nd most food should only have the 31st most voting power when it comes to elections?

Dave = I think you are referring to the popular vote. The electoral college is in place to ensure that the whole country has a vote. The thing a lot of people seem to forget is that the electoral college gave us President Kennedy (who lost the popular vote to Nixon). So, when people get salty about their candidate not winning, they try to blame the electoral college, but it is the electoral college that attempts to make things fair and representative. Otherwise, only the major cities votes would matter, (and most of the major cities are very liberally dominated) due to their population size. America is a democratic republic, not a democracy. Our founding fathers definitely got a lot of things wrong, but they did attempt to look forward and keep things relatively fair. 🤷🏽♀️
The best I can tell they don't even teach civics in high school anymore so that the young have a better understanding of why the electoral college is so great. 😑

Not every state get same amount.
It's population. Example California about 33 Texas about 28 .
Most places in Midwest are low numbers 10 6 3 that is farming type states. There's the popular vote and electoral.
Each st has elected people to cast the electoral vote. Now they will usually vote the way state did.
Sometime they don't have to and don't. Some states will and is there policy they split the vote on how they did. This up to states
