  • Hi!
    I recently made another roll top backpack and tried a different pocket design. In this video, I show you how I made a removable pocket organizer to keep small items from spilling out or collecting on the bottom of the pocket.

    THERE ARE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS IN THIS VIDEO. I'm sorry, it's annoying, and I've tried everything I can to no avail. I hope the content is worth the annoyance.

      I did not notice any technical issues, and I have very low vision.
      Love your kitty buddy and excellent helper ;-))
      I'm not sure if you chose orange for this project or if it's just what was handy/available, but long before I lost my vision, I cursed any company that made purses or totes that that chose black, navy or any other very dark color for the interiors/lining -- awful for locating anything inside, and also they seem to avoid a design where everything is not gently launderable, and/or removable for washing.
      This has been a hot button for me for decades, not just regarding low vision, or with the very recent virus inconvenience [long backstory of mine, way too long to share here]; let's just reference my life since 1981: EHC-Dallas, et al.
      While orange is my least favorite color for fabric or paint, it does help in this and similar circumstance, for visibility in general.
      For manufacturers of electronics [mostly critical info done in black, in tiny font size, placed on identical black plastic housing] and that includes tvs, computers and medical devices, since the 1980s and even older. In my dreams I envision anyone who ever thought that up should be taken to a dark alley out back and appropriately punished LOL.

      Hi! Good points, thanks for sharing.
      I've been a proponent of bright colors in bag interiors pretty much since I started trying to make the things.
      I have reasonably good eyesight, but have reached the age where readers are more of a necessity than an option, and I frequently find myself wondering what manufacturers were thinking when they size the font of placards, instructions etc. To the extent that I can, I feel your pain.
      One of my first "real" backpacks had a bright green interior. I'm thinking of re-visiting that soon :)
      Thanks for being part of the channel!

      Wasn't too distracting, so no worries. Looks like export compressions problems. Next time you have a glitch like that in the file you can see if you can export JUST THAT PART of the video and see if the glitch is still there. Or cover that part that's giving you problems with something just for a test (some other footage). If it's still there, try creating a new project and importing only the part of the footage that's giving you that error. The more you narrow it down, the more things you can eliminate (maybe you have applied an effect that gives you a render error, etc) and ultimately it might be that there was something wrong with the files itself (unlikely - but "worst things have happened to better people" rule always applies!).

    You've given me many ideas and tips, so I'll throw one of mine out to you.
    In the process of making heavy duty pouches and pockets for the tool vests I make, I came up with a good stiffener. I use green plastic yard sale signs from Lowes. I fasten the plastic between 2 layers of material with 3M Super 77 contact adhesive.
    My machine for these projects is a Singer 212 industrial walking needle machine, but an old Singer would probably work.

      Sorry, I often forget when making these videos that most people haven't watched every video I've ever made, so I keep forgetting to repeat things like thread and needle choices. :)
      I almost exclusively use bonded nylon thread in size V69 (aka T70). Needles tend to be in the 70-110 size range. I'm honestly not that picky about needles.

    great video! I guess I will be sewing the front pocket/pouch thing for pens and multitools and whatever a little bit wider with a bit more fabric than the backpiece to prevent it curving like yours des; this would annoy me a bit and its knid of wasted space. Currently figuring out how to shape pouches the way I want them to anyway, so this is a nice learning lesson you gave me there.

    I’m hoping to make something like this for work! We wear coveralls and everything always gets lost in the top pockets. Plus we need to empty the pockets every time we need to wash the coveralls. You may call me lazy but taking a pouch out would be far more desirable than taking out a dozen or so tools 😂

    Coming back from the future, to say glitches are no problem and I actually enjoy seeing people use vintage machines. I bought a Nechhi BU a few months back and changing from a modern 'computerized' machine to one that doesn't try to hold your hand much provides more of a learning curve than I was expecting. We get along fine now but watching you sew with your Singer reassured me that I'm doing things just fine. Also, did you figure out your bobbin tension issue? I'm seeing some similar stuff with my Necchi and wondering if there are some more parts I should be replacing.

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  4 года назад +1

      Hi Cole!
      I haven't used that machine since I made this video, but my suspicion is that the tension spring on the bobbin case is weakened from age and use, and needs to be replaced. It should be a simple operation. I'm currently up to 17 machines, though, and some of them only get used sporadically, so I'll probably only remember that I need to do that next time I use it and have tension issues lol!

    Great project. Thanks for sharing and thanks for your whole channel. A quick question: how do you figure the size for the top panel of the pockets to achieve room for the stored items? I'm assuming it's larger to create space. And if that's so, how do you sew the extra fabric neatly- with pleats? Thanks so much.

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  4 года назад +1

      Hi Aaron,
      On this particular project, the pockets are just flat, and rely on the non-rigid nature of fabric to create the volume for the items.
      Here is an older video of mine that shows a way to do this with more precision. It's an older video, so the audio quality especially isn't great, but I think the information in it might be helpful.
