Newport Waves Rescue

- *You can hate on the video if you want, but please remember there were 100s of people watching the waves while the lifeguards did their best to rescue 2 people. I didn’t see the person way out off the pier while taping this. As a spectator I was in NO position to rescue anyone myself nor expected to.*
Huge 15-20 feet waves at the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA on July 24, 2009. I caught a lifeguard rescue as a swimmer was trying to come back to shore but was getting pummeled by the waves behind him. The waves reached the height of the actual pier spaying onlookers toward the end of the pier. It was some crazy stuff.
I was there, on the Balboa pier, watching this whole scene unfold, and it was unreal. The video just doesn't capture the enormity of the surf. After reading several posts below about lifeguards and swimmers, I wanted to give my perspective. I grew up in OC and have been body surfing for 40 years, including Balboa Beach in this video. Balboa Beach is typically a shore break, and never breaks this far out. The size and energy of the waves was incredible. I tried to go out the day before (much smaller), and just waist deep felt like you were standing in a blender.
Just before these two kids (18-ish) swam out, an older guy (30-ish) swam out and did an amazing job body surfing two large waves. The older guy then came in looking exhausted, and that is when the two kids ran in. These kids were every bit a swimmer as a life guard. But, they could not have picked a worse time, as this huge set rolled in just as they entered the water. The waves were skimming the bottom of the pier, shaking the pier, and broke off a large cross member. The kid caught inside was getting pounded. He would duck dive, but when he came up on the back side, he would take a breath, and then the currents would draw him back under water for another 15-20 secs.
A lifeguard ran down the pier and called out to guy, asking if he needed help, and the kid waved him in. In the next video, you see the lifeguard jump off the pier. Fortunately, the large set ended, and the lifeguard was able to pull him further out. Don't know if the lifeguard boat came and hauled them in.
In case anyone was wondering: The lifeguard ended up saving the dude at the very back.
I was about to say did no one else see the other guy drowning 💀
@@Hsksteady ikr I was looking for comments and no one said anything lol so I did my research 😂
Haha other guy searching gold or metal
😂
hahhah
Business asusual.
I was wondering 😀😀
Yeah! 😂
The guy looking for treasure is not about to let someone drowning get in the way of his money
He just found a quarter, fuck that other noise
The lifeguards are ignoring the poor guy getting blasted by 15 foot sets
Anybody noticed the other dude in the back that also occured to be stick in the waves and seemed to be in a lot worse condition or was that just a surfer?
Just smoke some more weed and fry more brain cells.
Having grown up near the ocean and swimming in the OR/WA coast my entire life I had my closest drowning experience just last year. Always check your tides (going out or coming in), check with local guards, ranger stations, any resource possible, for recent updates, and always, always, ALWAYS underestimate your ability. Because if the ocean wants you, she will take you.
The Life guard was petrified to go and get the second guy who was probably praying he would save him. I hope he was ok 🙏
omg what happened to the guy way out there I. the waves you didn't even mention him.
is the other guy searching for land mines?!
whats funny :D
No he's just come trying to come up on the guys wedding ring that fell off $ he's all about that treasure he doesn't give a fuck
The guy literally searching for lost items. While these two people are drowning.
He is a moron
No. Hes trying to wash the crabs off from your moms house
There's always a metal detector! 😂😂😂
This commentary is legendary!
Homie has fins and everything lol
Please forgive my ignorance, but can't the boy who is furthest away try to reach the shore by taking advantage of the momentum of the waves, instead of submerging and letting them pass? It's just a question!
He had such a hard time getting out because he was wearing flippers
Dude sounds like "Valley dude"...OMG
and the lifeguards doenst rescue the one outside ?
wht can he do? Look at what he has to work with. Those are 30ft waves, if he try’s to help him he’ll get caught in the impact zone too.
“He got him out” - Other guy is still flailing around out there 😂
dUDE YOU NEED MORE oh MY GOD YOU AINT SAID IT ENOUGH
The title has to be people dying and i am searching for gold
There are so many comments. I didn't read them all. But there are save some dorks calling themselves experts and calling this waves 6 or 8 ft. The crest of the wave @ 1:04 breaks / falls down in 1 secunde. With the free fall formula (h = 0,5 * g * t^2) you get h = 0,5 * 9,81 m /s^2 * (1s)^2 = 4,9 m (16 ft). That's the wave height. The Amplitude is divided by two so 2,45 m (8ft).
Wow those are big waves! I would be the guy with the medal detector 😄
RUclips Algorithm is older then the people watching this video
Pathetic lifeguarding, dude’s getting pounded and the “guard” just waches, and even goes back at a time! He “handed” the tube to an all ready tired victim, wtf??? Secure the guy an pull him out!
May not feel good but if you get stuck in a rip or waves this big and get stuck under the pier just wait for the sets to come in and push you up.May hurt you but it gives you a chance
I know the gold guy is a surfer, haha, let me explain: for this guy, this is just a normal day with not surfeable innofensive waves that an inexpert non surfer but bodyboarder and a camera man make the whole scenario look like if it were the end of the world
lol
The guy with the fins seems a bodyboarder, and he got out very well
Those were some serious barrels....daaamn.
Remain calm, swim under the pitching lip if you can. Otherwise try to get either out beyond or well inside of the IMPACT ZONE. Nobody can just sit in shore break and get worked over and over. Also wear a wetsuit vest or shorty and have on boogie fins to give you some ability to swim and float.
Il bagnino non sapeva nemmeno dove si trovava in quel momento ahahah
Crazy, one guy looking for treasure🙃
The man with the monotone voice!
Спасибо шум волны прекрасна
"Oh my God....like oh my God. Oh my Goood... OOOOH MY GOOOOD!" All in the most valley-girl gayest voice possible. Hey great vid dude, or dudette, or, it,....or omg WHATEVER the fuck you are!! Hahahahahahaaa
😂😂
Will your next video have "Ohh my Goodness" as a soundtrack ?
O mar é perigosíssimo, já tirou muito fôlego de vida
I love the fairy-commentary
4 years old but fuck it 🍻😅
I have never ever seen waves like that.
Proper tombstone waves
Oh mah gaaaaaawwwwwwwwdddddddddd....awwwwddddd that's so huge
The other guy isnt in any immediate danger.. As counter-intuitive as it sounds, duck diving and paddling furthur out was the safest move in these waves. Closer to shore, the stronger the rip currents.
With fins on and a little experience, this ain't no big deal to a lot of bodysurfers. Just that pier, that's the hairy part. Getting a pillar in the chops is a bit of show stopper.
Not true with rip currents, I and many other surfer's have been carried out way past were waves are breaking by the rip current during a big swell.
Learn something every day. When I was caught in a rip tide I swam every time the waves crashed let it pull me back and swam more when it pushes me in. That worked too but that option sounds safer.
those arent rip currents
1:30 Rescuers go to drink hot tea.
Clean up set , didn’t stop
Guy in the background in stuck is a rip current, he's probably struggling against the current under the water, tiring himself out.
43854586 that’s not a rip because there is no divide in the water
No
He’s going underwater because the wave essentially just rolls over you. It is actually worse to stay above water in this instance. That is why he goes under water about 2-3 seconds every time a wave is coming towards him.
If there was a rip you would see it
Almost drown? Very very good👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌✌✌✌
Does holy shit come from a holy person?
The lifeguard was helping the dude under the pier so the dude didn't have to take off his flippers... very much NOT a rescue. Probably also a lifeguard. And the guy out in the surf was submarining exactly as any swimmer knows to do in the surf... he's clearly headed outside for some epic body surfing. And those waves are 10-12 at the face, 8 or so from the back (on the Hawaiian scale). Nothing but fun to see here.
Kinda like this: ruclips.net/video/ZPO1zpDqQ8I/видео.html but without the rockstar.
@@svensvrgen6336 Sure they're ridable... but they wouldn't be much fun- shore pounders are a lot of work for little reward. I was just bodysurfing waves exactly like that outside Sayulita Mexico (my shoulder is too fucked up at the moment to even bodyboard, much less surf) and it was fun, but exhausting, and it gets dull after a while - I got ragdolled more than I wanted. But the waves in this video are kind of unremarkable...
youre full of shit, thats like waimea shorey on a really heavy day. There's no fucking way you were bodysurfing waves 'exactly like this'. stop lying on the internet, grandpa kook
The dude with the prospecting stick! What the?!
(just fishing the internet on NB lifeguards) & I know the lifeguard that saved that kid!!! GOOD JOB NB!!!! those waves are crazy!
Great job Newport lifeguard!
Hi
I think Inspector Gadget @1:28 was looking for his metal vibrator, don't worry about the guy who's about to drown. WTF!!!
Even this is too much for a lifeguard- helicopters would have been better- but amazing that the lifeguard saved them. Amazing.
he sounds like the guy in the video "look at this" OOOH WOUD YA LOOK AT THIS! JUST LOOK AT IT!
It’s like they didn’t get one of them
"OMG ! OMG ! OMG ! Holly Shit ! OMG !......"
🤮😬
IT'S WATER!!!! This is the surf we'd swim in as kids!!! Grew up in Long Beach, LI (Billy Chrystal was my neighbor), and Miami Beach, Fl. We body surfed biggerwaves than this when a storm blew in, not talkin bout 'canes, just bad storms and they happened regularly. It won't hurt you, unless you stay rigid, get too close to a pier or rock jetty. Surf like this = Play-time!!
One word :
DAMNNNNNNNNNNNN
Fools gold at Balboa!!! lol
DID U EVER SAVE THE OTHER PERSON WHO WAS DROWNIN...?? instead of saying some "omg.... omg...omg...omg..
+Aloha Beau obviously he was drowning wth
@@krrana3563 okay you and Jada are killing me. Lol. The other dudes just having a blast ducking through waves because he has ocean experience under his belt. Smh.😆🏄♂️✌
I mean... I wouldn’t risk my life for someone being irresponsible and the stuff ‘KateDenthimamai’ said
Easier to say OMG 30 times. His GOD left after the first 10 OMG.
The guy with the metal detector
So did the other one drown?
The lifeguard should have had him hold the buoy the whole way up the beach
Lifeguard rescue priority - throw, row, or go. Throw the rescue bouy, row the boat to the victim, or go swimming.
Update on the guy out the back?
Update... he came in dried off and put some clothes on and went to Popeye's and watch a movie with his girlfriend and boned out cuz he knows what he's doing.
vanlife 123s ikr, he’s not a pussy like other people lmao
There one was guy way out there !
the guy searching with metal detector is the most " I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THESE WAVES" person in the world.
he looks up and thiks fucking peony waves. he thi js he farts in his tub and get bigger waves.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
If this was Hawai’i there would be people out there
Do you call this rescue?
Que
Paso con el otro
What about the other person???
Someone commented that he was rescued later.
OMG!! It's like on the pier....Lol
El otro hace lo correcto, nadar hacia la ola. No desesperarse tratando de nadar hacia la orilla. Hay que ir mar adentro y esperar que cesen las olas o que llegue un salvavidas
The lifeguard took his sweet as time. He is paid to save people no? Surely with the flotation device and strong swimming skills that shouldn’t have taken so long? What about the second guy too?
Yeah he should've just told mother nature to just relax for a few minutes.... Kook
Gdyby nie było "omg", anglojęzyczni byliby niemi.
The person in white shirt might be blind
Only said : Oh My GOOD...
Em quanto isso o velhote ta caçando moedas com o detector de metais 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
he did not get him out. lifeguard did nothing. just stood there and waited for the guy to wash up. might as well save yourself or drown waiting for a lifeguard here
They have a protocol to follow
Hey Byron. You're a fucking pussy
Like si hablas español 😉
Шикарная волна, я в такую купался и ещё хочу!
Won't find me there to be honest.
the other dude just chillin out there
Thank you 😃 great comment try telling all these other idiots that.
There were two guys there was one more further in did he die
1:00 middle left of screen. He be fine🤣
hahahaha there was a guy with a metal detector out there lol
Hay personas muy imprudentes con el mar. El oleaje tiene una fuerza bruta aunque sea agua...la gente no lo entiende y se lo lleva. 😪😪😪
The guy filming is an air head. Slurred speech too.
que miedo con eses ola el mar esta enojado
Is the kid Mexican?
How many times are you going to say OMG 😮
People body surfing there should be aware of the surf and used to handling it. So I'm guessing none of these guys were actually in trouble.
except he's a young kid by the looks of it and that one lip hit him right on the head. He probably would have managed on his own but as a lifeguard you don't make that bet.
I would let a wave take me to the top of the pier and i would grab it then climb up
Hello, I sent an email to the one listed on your outreach page. Thanks.
Teve sorte em meu padrinho...

Why does RUclips recommend videos of "dudes" that talk like this?
Danger

Oh my god!!!! 🤓
The other guy drowned
