    The San Cristobal armory was a surprisingly large-scale arms manufacturer set up in the Dominican Republic in the late 40s. They produced several different weapons, but the most common was the Model 2 Cristobal carbine. Designed by Pál Király, it was a lever-delayed blowback mechanism chambered for the US .30 carbine cartridge (7.62x33mm).
    Tens of thousands were produced (exact numbers are unclear), and they were a popular weapon in central and south America. Unlike the US M1 Carbine, the Cristobal used a magazine mounted at slightly less than 90 degrees to the barrel. Most of the carbines produced were select-fire, with a front trigger for semiauto fire and a rear trigger for fullauto. A semiauto only variant with a single trigger was apparently also produced. All types are quite uncommon today.
    Many thanks to the Royal Armouries for allowing me to film this tremendously rare artifact! The NFC collection there - perhaps the best military small arms collection in Western Europe - is available by appointment to researchers:

I have to imagine there are crates of these in warehouses somewhere on the island. Dominicans never throw anything away and either save or make use of everything.

      The lever delay system turns this into an entirely different class of gun. Open bolt guns come into their own in sustained automatic fire where their immense difference in cooling and higher safe operating temperature give it a leg up on closed built designs. The lever delay mechanism also allows for safer and cleaner use of crap ammo as it does not come in contract with any of the burning gases. This would have been a better design for wwii and for countries with terrible ammunition manufacture.

      Top feed means mag blocking your line of sight as on the owen. It might make it more reliable but with a mag like that, it looks like it should have been fine. I do agree with not getting showered by brass in the face as a right hander though. Ian's struggles with many designs as a lefty makes me think that a right eject is pretty dang important. Auto dust cover would have been nice, but would have been unexpectedly so, even our m3s didn't have them.

    I had a chance to fire one of these at a Banzai Shoot at Bobby Blevins farm in Alabama several years ago. I shot an M 2 Carbine then the San Cristobal. I agreed with the consensus of the Men there that the San Cristobal was the more controllable and accurate of the 2 in full auto. and the M 2 Carbine was lighter, handier and felt better when shouldered and easier to get hits with on Semi auto. I felt it as a great gift to get to shoot 25 shots, 3 or 4 Semi the rest on auto.s from such a rare gun,

      You are indeed fortunate! I would really love to see someone doing what you got to do, on RUclips, i.e. a comparison between the M2 and the San Cristobal. I expect the results will be what you also found: the heavier San Cristobal with its lower rate of fire will be better on full auto while the M2, firing from a closed bolt, will be better on semi-auto. The M2 is actually a little rifle while the San Cristobal is a big SMG.

    Very interesting gun! A later version of the gun, called the San Cristobal Model 1962, was more sub machine-gun like, with a shorter barrel (12"), perforated, tubular barrel sleeve and a folding stock. The interesting thing about this gun, especially the later version, is that some people feel that the M1 carbine cartridge is actually an overgrown pistol cartridge rather than an anaemic rifle cartridge, and that a SMG type weapon, such as the Cristobal, is actually more suited to the cartridge than the M1 carbine, which was trying to be an assault rifle. What would be really, really interesting is if Ian could get his hands on one of these to fire it, and to compare it to the M1 and the M2 carbines.

    • @Howjadoo22
      @Howjadoo22 3 года назад +14

      The M1 Carbine wasn't "trying to be an assault rifle", it was trying (and succeeded) to be a handy, lightweight, personal defense weapon for mechanized troops, artillerymen, and rear line troops, replacing their pistols.

    • @elijahaitaok8624

      @@Howjadoo22 it’s technically an intermediate cartridge, so “assault rifle” is a shoe that fits based on how you look at it. Along side with a bundle of American hunters saying it’s an anemic rifle cartridge

    • @Jurflip2
      @Jurflip2 3 года назад +7

      @@Howjadoo22 That was indeed what it was designed to do but it was widely employed as an assault rifle during WW2, the Korean war and the early stages of the war in Viet Nam. Thousands of first line combat troops (paratroopers, Marines, etc.) were armed with the M1 carbine. The M2 version was developed because these troops wanted full-auto capability, not because artillerymen and rear line troops required full auto PDWs. It should also be noted that, despite the relatively low-powered cartridge, the M1/M2 carbines were very successful in the assault rifle role.

    • @Jurflip2
      @Jurflip2 3 года назад +2

      @@0neDoomedSpaceMarine That is really why I placed my comment. The M1 and M2 carbines were employed as assault rifles during WW2 and they were undeniably successful in this role. The power of the cartridge is, as you suggest, marginal for this role. A SMG built around the M1 cartridge might even have been a better weapon. I am thinking of a gun like the M3 grease gun but with the retarded blow-back mechanism of the Cristobal, a 12 inch barrel and the rate of fire reduced to 400-450 rpm, for instance. The M2 carbine was OK but the rate of fire was excessive, imo. Combined with the poorly designed stock, this resulted in poor controllability.

      My father-in-law was an infantry soldier when the guerrillas arrived in Constanza in 1959. He was 17 years old when he had to fight. He had a FAL Rifle and his companions used Cristóbal Rifles. Of 140 men who climbed the mountain that day, after a month and 11 days of fighting, only 39 came down. Boys without absolute experience, they fought from low ground. Mustang P51 planes gave them support, but they also killed many allies. There were many more soldiers on the mountain, there were many more. My father-in-law fought in 1959 against the guerrillas and later, in 1965 he fought against his comrades, the military that gave the coup to President Bosch ... then he fought against the Americans who invaded them months later.
      After the war, he devoted himself to work as chief mechanic at UASD state university.

      During Trujillo's time he significantly expanded the military, including the air force and navy. Lots of WWII surplus aircraft, as well as Vampire jets. After his assassination most of it wasn't kept.
      This is reasonable since the only reason Trujillo really focused on the military was one, his worry of overthrow (reasonable since he was terrible and everyone hated him) and two his own ego. Once he was gone nobody wanted to keep much of it. I think the arms industry would have been better kept, so the DR wouldn't have to rely so much on things like tourism.

The Enriquillo 38 caliber revolver ( Named after a native Taino Cacique warrior ) was crafted to be the secret service (SIN) sidearm. The SIN was a Gestapo like ruled by the Trujillo’s henchman the infamous Johny Abbés, a Half German man who’s father was a German manager at European sugar cane plantations in the DR. The SC Carbine was the favourite gun of guerrilla’s leader Ernesto “Che”Guevara, and the one he carried until his death.

    • @jam67uk
      @jam67uk 3 года назад +1

      @@edm240b9 Just slightly lighter stamping really, but they ARE definitely there (without even considering the spacing as Jared Bruce points out as well) - also, if you look at the R.D. part you refer to, you can see that the point after the 'D' is slightly larger & more heavily indented than the one after the 'R', so some variation is already in evidence.
      So, as far as i can see, definitely dots (full-stops/periods) & therefore definitely an abbreviation for something rather a Spanish 'in'.

    Hey Ian, big fan of your channel, keep up the amazing work.
    I lived a very long time in the Dominican Republic, I don't know if the info is accurate or not (it is according to a book I use to own called Infantry Weapons of the World), but the origin of this gun in the DR is told as a deal that was made with Beretta, where some engineers were loaned for the development of this weapon. As interesting trivia, the gun is colloquially known as "Cuerno de Chivo" or "Goat's Horn" due to some of the magazines used being curved. It is also renowned on the island for it's unreliability, and a design flaw which often enough caused the rifle to fire when dropped or if it suffered a strike or shock; this being an automatic weapon, it gained a reputation for being quite dangerous for the user.

    Hey, if you actually have enough ammo, then having everyone armed with 30cal carbine is better than everyone being armed with 45ACP or 9x19. For a tiny island nation the ability to hand one of these to every man, woman, and child in the event of an invasion (with enough ammo) wouldn't be the worst case scenario for general armament.
