Possibly the coolest small arm used by the United States in the Vietnam War was the China Lake 40mm pump action grenade launcher. Only 24 of these were made, each fitted by hand. Of those, 2 went to MACVSOG, 2 to Army Force Recon, and the remaining 20 the the Navy SEALS. They were used as an ambush initiation weapon, with 4 rounds of rapid-fire 40mm HE grenades available.
Only five original examples survive today; four in US museums and military institutions and one in a museum in Saigon. An effort was made in 2004 to build reproductions, it is one of those used in this video. This project was not ultimately successful, but did lead to a very interesting series of events with the Airtronic company and the US Marine Corps, which will be detailed in a following video. Special thanks to Dutch Hillenburg and Kevin Dockery for making this video possible!

It's never the bullet with your name on it that you need to worry about. Those rounds addressed "to whom it may concern", however...

My grandpa told me about these things😂😂 he said they were lucky enough to to have one assigned for a couple weeks 😂😂 said they lost it but the carrier told higher ups he had to leave it to reduce battle load

For shotguns, people always discuss between 12 gauge and 20 gauge, whereas the only reasonable answer is 40mm.
What about 8 gauge?

@@juanordonezgalban2278 The m203 does with an aluminum tube. They're anti-personnel rounds. I've personally fired one, and will say that they're a lot rougher on your shoulder than a 12 gauge. I assume the m-79 had similar rounds.

Honestly at enough range that's entirely feasable. H3VR (virtual reality firearms simulator that has great shooting mechanics) has one of these and it just makes bloopin' enemies so easy.
What you want is the belt-fed full auto version

Have an assistant gunner next to you with rounds in his hands. Put 7 or 10 rounds in the target area in a very short time. (Assuming 4 in the weapon initially.) What's left of the enemy won't have much in the way of situational awareness.

Sons of guns was a worthless show that disparged the entire firearms community. Shame to see they ruined this DD.
Not only that, but several of them (father, daughter and her boyfriend) were found to be pedophiles.
It was a bad show for gun owners but it got a few guys I know into guns so I guess it was as much a curse as a blessing. Tho I still have my red jacket firearms rifle I bought when the show was new and I bought into the hype. I think I only put a few mags through it and put it in the case where is been since 2011ish.
Terrible show yes, but they did some good work on Saiga shotguns. Had a friend who had his sent to them for work and came back a brand new machine and ran fantastic up till the time he sold it.

@@lanceroark6386 I don't believe so, no. The Ithaca 37 shotguns used in Vietnam by similar special operations forces did, however. I don't think those were ever official inventory either though.

I remember hearing a story from a friend who carried an M203 who had a chucklefuck toss a 40mm to him softball style from the roof of a 2 story building. As he put it "In theory a 40mm shouldn't arm from the spin and velocity of being tossed, but fuck if I was going to stand there and test that theory." He and everyone near him dove for cover, the grenade thumped into the ground harmlessly, and the idiot was confused, at least until the sargent got to him for his epic ass-chewing.

In concept, the sticky bomb mod for the Combat Shotgun in DOOM Eternal isn’t all that different, minus the fact that this wasn’t used with timed, adhesive grenades.

There are sub-caliber adapters available for the M203 grenade launcher which allows the use of 12 guage shotgun shells. Its not far off...

@Chris Johnson That exists, its called the M576 40mm and can be used in almost any grenade launcher capable of firing standard 40mm grenades such as the M203 and M79. I'm quite sure you would be able to fire that from a china lake.
My first introduction to the CL was call of duty. I've always considered myself a gun buff and was shamed that I'd never known anything about this until then. Damn cool video as usual.

One of these is on display in the Saigon War Museum, but when I had a look at it, it was still labelled as the M79 Grenade Launcher. It was really exciting to see it knowing that so few originals are out there.
I remember hearing a SEAL describe their Vietnam style of fighting. Each SEAL would put as much lead down range as possible. They wanted the enemy to believe they were up against a large collection of troops so they would not attempt to maneuver on them. And they could slip out in the chaos.
The video then cut to 3 SEALS moving with m60s and shoulder firing them causing mayhem. It was kind of beautiful.

If you’re referring to the TF2 grenade launcher, I believe that it originally did have 6 grenades with 36 in reserve.
Then promptly discovered how overpowered and broken that was, so cut down the capacity to 4 and the reloads to 16.
