      This was my first shed, so there were mistakes and inefficiencies for sure. In the end, I'm happy with the result. If I did this for a living, I would love to have the tricks, tools, jigs etc that you have in your arsenal. Thanks for watching!

    My goodness, most of you people are so overly critical of this fellows efforts at showing the process of building his shed!! "What were you thinking wearing flip-flops while doing this work?!? I'm going to go outside the realm of what is my business and tell you about yourself and your flip-flops! What a travesty! Better get out the ole guillotine and make him pay for this GRAVE mistake!!". "How dare you not build your shed to my, and the IRC's, standards!! Let's shame him with remarks, some sly and some not so much, on his performance and make him feel bad although he's done nothing wrong!". I for one am grateful for his efforts in building his shed, and for him posting the good quality video. I believe his shed looks well built and like it will be more than adequate to stand up to years of use. As he stated, I believe more than once, in these comments his shed is constructed perfectly well enough, especially when compared to those prefab outfits they sale at Lowe's or Home Depot or one of the probably thousands of "road side" retailers of prefab buildings, that might be worth mentioning MOSTLY have 2X4 floor joists, ceiling joists (if applicable), and rafters and/or other roof framework and I can almost guarantee ARE NOT built to any code. I don't believe you people would fare very well where I live at, which is southwest Tennessee. Of the five properties (three with inhabited homes) between my spouse and I, which are across two counties, two that are in the city limits of towns, and one that is directly in the center of a town, there are ABSOLUTELY no required building codes, nor any rules that MUST be abided by for building (residentially) as long as you are not building a home to sell and as long as you don't build more than a certain number of homes within a certain period of time. One is able to request an inspection by the state fire marshal if one chooses to do so but it is not at all required. Having said that I've never seen, nor even heard, of a building of any sort either falling in or causing any sort of harm to anyone as a result of the construction. That's not to say it has not happened as I'm sure it has, I've just never personally heard or seen it happen. So go purchase your permits and chat it up with the building/code enforcer, I'm going to go work on my shed; located in an area where a code or building enforcer has never been and never will if I have anything to do with it. Good day to you all!

      Colton, thanks for the kind words! FYI, my local municipality did 3 inspections on my shed (all passed) and it still looks like new after 3 winters. So my flip-flop wearing and non-professionalism were not a factor in the quality of the end product. 😅 All the best on your shed build!

      @FixItScotty  Год назад

      Thanks! If it rains during the framing, just let it thoroughly dry out. Wood won't rot just getting wet. It needs to be wet for a sustained time to rot. As long as you let it dry out, you are fine.

    • @FixItScotty
      @FixItScotty  Год назад

      That's just what my plans called for. I suppose it was to limit the number of foundation piers needed. I have 3 piers on each side of the 10' span and 2x10 floor joists spanning the 12' side at 16" on center. You are allowed up to a 14' span with that floor joist configuration.

    • @multipotentialite
      @multipotentialite Год назад

      @@FixItScotty Thanks for the reply years later.
      I'm missing something why would you need another pier? I would think having less distance between piers would be stronger.

    • @FixItScotty
      @FixItScotty  Год назад +1

      @@multipotentialite Actually I don't think you would need another pier if you decided to lay them on the 12' side. I believe they can span 8'. So whether you put your piers on the 10 or 12' side, you would need 3 on each side.

    • @FixItScotty
      @FixItScotty  2 года назад

      Agreed, I should not have been wearing flip flops. As for the post anchors, is there any reason not to use them? Can you recommend a better approach for affixing the double 2x8 ends to the piers?

    • @razorcade
      @razorcade 2 года назад

      @@FixItScotty Yes, you use 4x4 concrete post anchors and sandwich a piece of half inch plywood between the 2x8 joists. Also you would attach the double joist past the anchor by 1 1/2 inches and attach the cross joist outside the anchor. All of the load bearing in the corners are supported by the double 2x8's.

    Mending strips require a hydraulic press in order to be properly fitted. They should *never* be hammered/tamped-in, *especially* by hand. For the sake of your building's integrity, and for your own safety, I hope you replace the mending strips with an appropriate fastener.

  • @bongo72276

    How on gods green earth this ever passed inspection ill never know. Modifying truss hangers is a no no. They get their strength from nailing all holes on both sides. 2x4 header on a load bearing wall?? Scary. Door openings 6' and greater should have double king studs. Your roof will bow in after time especially if you have several bad winters. Truss on on 24 means on only 4 of them land on studs to transfer the weight to foundation. This is prime example why the internet is a dangerous thing

    • @bongo72276
      @bongo72276 3 года назад

      Also you didn't need to make the trust first to determine the height of the wall. That is a given with a 4/12. The height is 4 × half the width of building in inches

    • @FixItScotty
      @FixItScotty  3 года назад +5

      Sheds are not scrutinized like homes. Compare my structure with that of a store-bought shed kit and tell me which one is scary. ruclips.net/video/h1rpBVSc4Dk/видео.html

    • @bongo72276
      @bongo72276 3 года назад

      @@FixItScotty I am comparing to house standards. There are no rules for a prefab one from home depot. For a 6' door the header should be at least a 2x8 header on a load bearing wall. Also openings 6> should have double jacks. And once you modified the truss clips they lost all integrity. They get their strength from having all holes on both side nailed in. Same with the brackets in the piers. And why did you decide on double up 2x8 instead of 4x8?

    • @FixItScotty
      @FixItScotty  3 года назад +2

      @@bongo72276 You obviously know framing well and I appreciate your input. I followed standard utility shed plans. The truss clips weren't even necessary - I could have toenailed into the ledger. On the next video, I tie in T11 siding to the outer trusses and tie the trusses together with 2x4s and tie in with roof sheathing. My shed may not meet house/dwelling code, but far exceeds shed building standards when compared to prefab kits.
