Love these fitting sessions. NEVER seen the evidence of how the various combos of equipment could have so much influence. Certainly wish I could find a professional fitter such as yourself in South Texas (US). Great work.
Thanks Ross for the fitting! Was a great experience and was good to see the fine details that you explore to get the perfect match! Now to work on my short game apparently!! 😆😆
i have the same problem, i was launching 7 iron at 28 degrees sometimes, i just got fitted into p790 with extra stiff shafts even though i have a slower swing speed than yours, the big difference i found that never got mentioned in your fitting was i got fitted into a stiffer ball. the callaway tour chrome x it dropped my launch angle also, might be worth trying a different ball than your normal.
Great fitting, seemed quite similar to mine! Jack seemed like a pretty perfect client with a clean swing 😄 loving my P770’s, I think the straight push he sometimes misses with may be down to delivering the toe around 2° down which naturally will push the ball right, I had the same issue and a lesson last week sorted it out. Your combo and advice seems to have fixed it for him!
Nice, Ross! Always interesting to see how you fit different swings. A side note: I have the Mizuno JPX 923 Forged with the same shaft that I have in a bunch of other irons - same length and everything - and they feel by far the lightest of any of my iron sets. Even lighter than the sets of blades with that shaft.
It depends on the player really, skill level, what we want to do with the swing and how that would affect the outcome, with Jack as he had good speed so regardless of the fact he launched it high we would never have gone to a lower lofted club anyway (to try and bring height down) because he would just hit it miles and could bring it that low spin when he turns it over. So the fit would have been similar regardless of if we did the swing stuff before or after. Hence why I probably did it after. It would always have been in his plans to get his Aoa more down and take off more loft so a more lofted iron set enables him to grow into them and improve.
Glad I found your channel! Great content. I'd love to see a fitting for a player with decent swing speed that comes a bit over the top. Basically I hope you eventually do a fitting video on someone who resembles my game. 😂
Such an impressive fitting. The amount of time you spend in getting the best fit is excellent in comparison to personal experience. Where is this guy an 11 handicap, Carnoustie or Augusta??
Thank you Barrie! Yeah I was with him for at least an hour and a half maybe 2! We like to do things in depth! And the added swing bit we don't always do but I thought it would really help Jack 👌
Great video Ross, can you tell me once you find the best combo with the 7 iron do you go through the same process with the longer irons and shorter irons. I’ve heard it said that sometimes club fitting will incorporate a different shaft in the shorter or longer irons and also maybe a different head. ie titleist 150 for irons up to 7 then titleist 200 for 6,7,8 etc. Thanks.
Thanks Graham. No we don't currently but it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately and funny enough I was actually trying to figure out how much it would cost me to add 4i and PW heads into the demo kit and then also have a reasonable amount of shaft offerings for them too. It was much more than I thought 😂 so id love to and it would be a great service and it's something hopefully we can incorporate in the future but at the moment we are so small with small turnover and small profit we couldn't afford to without me putting up my fitting prices quite a lot which at the moment I don't really want to do.
No worries. And for that I would probably still book in for a full bag session which is 3.5 hours and is £175 (I think) 😂 we don't do manual bookings it's all through the website so I never really look at our prices 😂 only reason id still so the full bag is then you just wouldn't be rushed and have plenty of time for in depth testing 👌
Great fitting video. Interesting that you say fitting extra length shafts are of little benefit. I am 6 ft and 11 handicap and always have shafts half inch longer. Would I be better sticking with standard length ?
You are borderline so I would test both along with analysing which would be better for you swing dynamic and miss. But I am always a believer in you have more control over shorter clubs. So you need to have a reason to make them longer that gives you a benefit. If you can't do that then yes I would personally stick to Standard
@@epgolfstudiosohh this is making me think my club length now. 6’2” with +1” clubs, i hit fat a lot and began to realize clubs are likely too long for me
Absolutely you can yeah. For Jack right now I don't think it's completely necessary. We were using Chromesoft which is his gamer. Pretty mid spin ball really. When he hit a good one this spin was getting up towards the 6k which is great. And bearing in mind that it will spin more off grass and his high initial launch I wouldn't want it spinning much more than that at the moment. The next part is all about getting that aoa down and less delivered loft. That will naturally reduce launch and increase spin 👌
Good points How much does spin usually differ inside vs outside (taking weather conditions out of the equation)? Also, Any other data points that change from mats to grass?
@@MikeCline it really does depend on the player. Some will hit a little more down on grass Vs mats because they feel like they can. But generally from my tests somewhere between 3-600 revs more outside so a reasonable amount
Fr the outset, despite his near PGA 7i speed of 90mph, his strike points are low due to (1) high Dynamic Loft because of no shaft lean (2) low compression due to high launch (>20 deg😱), low strikes caused by shallow AoA (120g with X flex).
I wanted to go X as he's strong and speed will only get quicker as technique improves. And there's not many 120 X shafts, 110 would be too light. But the 130 was definitely a better weight for him. He still felt like it was light. And how he hit the DG X1 was just unquestionably the best fit for him
Only ONE problem in his delivery: Lack of shaft lean and high Dynamic Loft. Just a 4” lateral weight shift on the downswing would solve almost all the problems (1) AoA would increase by 2~3 deg (2) generate more Spin thus less Carry (~170 yrd) (3] more consistent strike point.
Love the pro cess! Or pra cess as we say across the pond. LOL. So interesting that the shaft drives so much result. Incl the contact. As he been having lessons elsewhere, but then you suggest change...what was his reaction ? Was he ready to continue lessons with you instead? Amazing work mate.
Thanks Bill! Yeah....you guys say it wrong ....🤣🤣🤣 Yeah shaft is always so much to do with strike and consistency (not launch and spin as most people think) Well I don't do lessons so he can't come to me anyway 😂 it was more tweaking than coaching really just simple tips tend to work nicely sometimes 👌
Jack must have a pretty ugly short game if he is an 11 handicap. He pretty well peppered the green, shot after shot, from 165. Edit: Do you have ZX7 in your matrix? I would have thought that might have been a nice match.
Yeah he swang it pretty nice most of the fitting 👌👌 so with the club and swing tweak hopefully single figures isn't too far away 🙌 and no we don't but I have hit them a few times and they spin a little on the lower side so prob still would have preferred the 770s
Two things to say: 1) he only REALLY peppered the green once he got the right club & shaft combination. And important to remember he hasn’t been playing with that setup to reach his 11 HCP 2) as a 12.8 HCP who hits it as least as far as Jack, I know very well what an “ugly short game” looks like😢. Putting’s fine, but as a person who swings fast, ask me to swing slowly and strike goes completely out the window. I’ve been known to put from 30 yards off the green to avoid chipping/pitching! It’s an absolute nightmare
So difficult to hit that many full swings in a row without a break, stretching, etc. I split my fitting up over 3 different sessions to keep my swing fresh and consistent. I am a heavy down striker so my ball contact is pretty violent and takes a bit of energy to complete.
Yeah it does depend on the player. 50/60 shots most people are ok with. But also if I feel the player will really struggle then I will get them hitting less shots with each and give them breaks. And I always recommend splitting up a full bag fitting!
Would be the opposite. P770 will spin more than his irons and not go as far. Those 3 will all tie into each other. The launch and spin will all depend on delivery. Get the peak height and angle of descent on the right place and the others will fall into line generally. Spin is more important for some players than others. Just depends on the delivery, speed and miss
@@epgolfstudios general statement/question. With stronger lofted irons becoming the norm I’m seeing a 5000-5500 spin rate indoors. But, optimally we’d want to see 6500. Unless the player hit a target descent angle then maybe spin at 1000 less wouldn’t be as bad. I’m not criticizing you or the guy you fit. Was just something I’ve observed. Seems like players would rather give up spin for distance in my opinion.
@@nikmc7539 yeah in general I'd agree with that statement for sure, which I don't love for a lot of people, especially slower swing speeds, but again there are a shed load of variables in there so it will be different for everyone. Most people don't have the speed to generate 6.5k spin and wouldn't benefit from it anyway. In Jack's case he hits everything super high, but didn't want too lower loft for him as didn't want spin getting mega low. The 770 is a nice balance where it's quite traditionally lofted and spins pretty well (compared to other irons) but it's pretty forgiving too. When he gets that angle of attack down more consistently that will generate lower launch and more backspin which will be beautiful 👌
He was swinging pretty well 👌 also it is slightly easier in the bay tbf. It's a little bit like the range. When hitting multiple 7 irons you dial in swing a little bit better than having to chop and change all the time and introduce multiple variables such as lie, wind, elevation ect. I look like a plus handicapper in the bay get me outside I can shoot 10 over comfortably 😂😂😂
With almost PGA 7i speed, it’s a shame he is still an 11 Hdcp simply because of his shitty ball striking. Less than 10 degrees of shaft lean (probably caused by his tendency to hang back) means less than ideal Launch, Smash Factor, flat AoA, lower Spin, etc. He needs more a 15 min lesson on swing mechanics/ball striking than club fitting.
Yup all those things we go over in the video, and I also spent about half an hour with him at the end showing him how to get angle of attack down to improve strike and ball flight so he's on the right path. Unfortunately golf is hard, the vast majority of golfers aren't the best ball strikers. I see this tendency with soo many players. Even ones that are getting lessons. Unfortunately the average standard of coaching isn't great
