I've got a couple barnyard mutts (easter eggers) that can put on a pretty good show. They look kinda like a less fluffy Welsummer. But just this evening while out on their evening romp, something spooked them all up and those girls impressed me with their flying. They hit about 15-20 high and came across the yard probably close to 100 feet. Had me covering up cuz they were all coming to me. lol
I had chickens at home growing up, they always flew up to our trees to sleep…. Always on our land and they didn’t go over our fences. Roosters will sing every morning at our rooms window which was located on the upper floor of the house. At home there were 2 houses one on top and one at the bottom floor, but they’ll fly up to sing. Miss those days.
I'm new to raising chickens. I was heartbroken when i went to put my chickens to bed last night and my rooster was missing. I was sure that a predator had taken him and I spent a good amount of time outdoors in my nightgown with a flashlight with my neighbors chuckling, as they were sitting around their firepit with beer. I woke up to him crowing happily. He'd spent the night on the roof of my house no doubt watching me look for him.
I have 15 hens, 7 are Golden Comets. They are the lightest chickens i have. My garden is right beside their free range area. Ive never had one hop over the 4 wire fence. They know there is goodies over there. I throw them weeds and when i find a bad tomato, they get it! If im watering the garden they know grass hoppers, spiders and crickets will be trying to escape the water so they pack up along the fence watching out for snacks! Ive had one 16 week old Golden Comet spend the night off property. We cut one of her wings and her litter mates, just incase. As he said the will run and flap their wing trying to hurry up and get to me when the see me! It always make me laugh to see them do that!
I live in a farm area and there are a lot of wild chickens here, they are small, and they can fly 50 meters. They can even fly on top of trees and stay there.
I raise large fowl Polish and Houdans. They are climbers though. I have more than one that learned to fly up and climb up to a higher height. One silver laced Polish would fly up onto our 3 foot high fence and from there up to our 9 foot tall barn roof. To get back down, I would watch him glide down. I have had Houdan hens flush up to 6 feet to perch unto the top of our coop doors inside our barn. I also had a Creve Coeur hen that was really good at flying/ She would climb to get high up and the launch and fly straight across several feet before touching back down to earth. Often she would whip by my head in the coop which was shocking the first time she did it. She rather enjoyed doing it.
I wouldn’t say silkies can fly but we had a silky growing up “poof” was her name and she would jump and fly up to the rim of our basketball hoop almost every day when we started to play basketball in the back yard. So I wouldn’t say they can fly but they sure can go 7-8 feet in the air if they want; it’s unusual but maybe Poof was different.
hy i got about 500 australorp open range in puerto rico . i have 5 acres with 6 ft fence. i been wondering for a while if i can put in longhorns . can day fly out. how high have you sean them fly.
My Polish chicken is neurotic and quite a dumdum. She can, however fly and is very willing to. The only thing though, because she's so dumb, she often miscalculates where she needs to land and easily flies way too far and lands some place she had no intention on being, and then she freaks out. 😂
Polish chickens can sometimes be described as ‘dumb’ because of their long feathers on their head. It kinda blocks their sight, so they can’t exactly see where they’re going.
I don't just watch this channel for the information. I like to watch and just zone out on all the beautiful chicken footage 😂
Me too! I love all their colors!
😂

Ever wonder what chickens do when you're not looking?
All the time
I know the truth.
Chicken is a kind of bird best for farmers
I often wondered why roosters did not fly out of the coop, but now I know 😂
My chicken caught wind on a very windy day and flew higher than I’ve ever seen! Almost like a kite catching wind 😮😮😮😮😮😮

I have 2 white leghorn hens and they are super nimble and very good flyers.

I’ve seen a few fly here in AL and west GA but not that many. They didn’t fly all that well either.

@@chickenfeeds8790 I trim around the crown, especially around the eyes for my Polish. She acts just as dumb, but far less skittish.
Soooo…we got a whole video about chickens flying, yet no flying chickens ? 🧐
Yes they can...I put the first flying chicken vid up on you tube 17 years ago. Script the flying chicken.
