You've got to understand, Mugs, that Third Eye isn't really a song in any typical understanding of the word. Its the sonic expression/equivalent of an intense psychedelic experience at a very personal and subjective level. The listener is brought along for the ride of that experience. And it does that exceptionally well, I've come across extremely few other tracks that achieve what Third Eye does...because it brings you through all of it, the energy, the challenges, the intimacy, the intensity, the fear, the love, the exultation. A fully fledged psychedelic experience, especially one that leads to an ego dissolution, is not Disney or just all good feels. Its challenging and runs the entire emotional gamut, and it comes with inherent danger, especailly if one tries to fight it and hold on for dear life. A prying is often the only way to cross the threshold, especially in the current culture we live in.

@@ju4408 One that may not typically be considered by the public or even intentional by the artist as a sonic expression of the psychedelic, but for me captures the various phases of a trip perfectly, is Existence in the Unfurling by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Give that a listen, and send me a track you think I should listen too

@@johnseward2934i have absolutely no idea and just dont understand how you can even think that song you mentioned comes even remotely close to the trippiness of Third Eye. Third Eye blows that song completely out of the water.

  • @johnh3ss

My take on the part where it sounds like he's talking to someone else is that he's actually talking to other parts of himself. The psychedelic he is on has fractured his mind and the different parts of his psyche are talking to each other. "Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?" = He's talking to the spiritual child-like part of his mind, who he took drugs to re-connect with. In the later verses I think he's still talking to that part of himself, saying that he thought it was hiding from him (because he had lost that sense of wonder/spirituality) and that it had thought he (the more rational/logical part of his mind) had abandoned spirituality to pursue reason and rules and other such boring things. It's weird because he's clearly been fractured by the psychedelic, but at the same time now the parts of himself can see each other clearly for the first time in a long time.

Third Eye is more a musical piece, than it is a song. I think some people have a hard time understanding this. But I ask you, what other band could pull off such a genius, and underappreciated masterpiece?
"Wiping the web and dew from my withered eye" is still one of the most spine tingling lyrics I've ever heard. The picture that paints is terrifying and beautiful all at the same time.

Been waiting for you to do this one. My favorite Tool song since it came out. Love your reactions, the replays, perspectives, all of it. You give the attention it deserves. You brought up the sound of something burning. I've never thought of it that way, but surely felt it that way. It's like this epic, cinematic, cosmic eruption, full of aggression, yet so beautifully arranged in a life like experience. Like the song is its own being somehow. Amazing.

It's me again man (Have a look at the other tool songs you've reacted to, I've sometimes left a few words there too...).
Of all Tool's songs, this is one that best represents the way in which their compositions can be complex, versatile, and yet extremely fluid and coherent. Just remember we're in 1996...

Bro......i love your reactions, commented on a few.....this song is a gahd damn land mine xD legit.....if you can do it safely and are of the mind.......revisit this song either on a mushroom or a nice acid high. If you do that (no idea if ya partake, the comedian in the intro bill hicks is making a monolouge of the subject (died in 94 from stomach cancer but was an amazing comedian and aparently good friends of tool considering he's got a dedication in the album.) I guarentee this song hits every vibe, you'll understand the lingo synergistically.....and before the spiral even existed....youd spiral out (* reminicent of maynards experience with a band that spiked him with whiskey and acid at a show.......guy drank like 100 hits and the guy from the other band didnt let him know til he was in on the ride.)

If anyone hasn't seen it yet, search "Tool Live Philadelphia 1992 Remastered (JC Dobbs)" and watch it, you can thank me later (and finish watching this reaction first 😁🤘)

Butterscotch is a double edge sword for me... pudding form is too much of it at once, the Worthers candies are good but only a couple, as a cream layer in cake its damn good, but when its the liquor warmed up on a cold winter day in New England after shoveling snow... its amazing.

I love so much that you branched out and gave Tool a try. Your tool reactions are epic in my mind. If you want some comic relief (MJK style), Check out the intro to hidden song on Undertow - "Disgustipated". Often folks refer the intro as "The Cries of the Carrots". It, like no other song, foreshadows the atrocities were to occur during the Carrot Holocaust.
Link Below. I remember having the CD for months before I even let it play long enough to stumble upon the hidden song.
