  • Sometimes you gotta just farm it. Because sometimes I forget I can do things on my own, until I try. And do. And this week I did. It wasn't a big thing, but sometimes little things actually are big things. Grinding corn, filling buckets, feeding cows, and feeding people homemade blueberry dump cake (because y'all asked me how, and I'm finally showing you. 🙂) Recipe below...

I can see the humor that lies beneath Lawrence's stoic exterior, the slight twinkle in his eye. Your channel takes me back to the happiest time of my life, childhood on my grandfather's farm. The smell of the corn crib and feed barrels, the crackling fire in the fireplace of a drafty old farmhouse. Hiding under my grandma's home sewn quilts listen ing to her make breakfast and dreading leaving my warm burrow when she would call me down. All that war 50 years ago and that was the last time I felt connected to family. Thank you Merrdith.

About the only thing I have in common with farming are the summers and weekends I spent on my uncle's farm in Wisconsin back in the 50s and 60s. As a scrawny kid it was hard work, but I loved it. My uncle's farm was a small dairy farm. We hand milked about 30 cows. Then we fed the hogs, chickens, horses, and other assorted domestic critters before firing up the 50s era John Deere tractor and heading out to the fields. This Deere required hand cranking to start. I loved doing that, as long as I got my arm out of the way from potential kickback. Crops were hay, corn, and tobacco. It was hot, sweaty, dusty hard work. My uncle was always tinkering and fixing things. For fun we would swim in the creek that ran through the pastures. Sometimes the cows would join us. Other times we would go squirrel hunting in the hills back of the farm, or ride horses to higher fields and back. We would bring back a bag full of squirrels for my aunt to cook. That was our meal for a few days. Wood cook stove, no indoor plumbing, but lots of love in that house. I'm an old man now sitting in my rocking chair and letting your videos and witty narrative bring back those memories... memories of real farming, Thank you for that. You are a beautiful young woman with a beautiful family, and I wish you many years of good luck and fortune.

As far as the swing goes it just goes to show we all still have a little kid left in us. Bonnie the dog on the matter of chasing squrrels " are you for real!" Yessir that ear of corn gave it's all. Unless yall need a portable mixer why don't you install a permanant hammer mill? My neighbor who runs a lot of cows did and he said it was money well spent. Uses an electric motor and he feeds with a feed wagon with an auger. They run a lot of cows and grind tons of feed. Just an idea. That dump cake looked good.

I have to tell ya...one of the things I like most about your and "the Farmer's" operation, is that it's so relatable....lIke "Miss Gehl acting up". Reminds me so much of the things I contended with as both a boy growing up; and later, as a young(er) man helping out. A neighbor once observed that with farm equipment, "breaking down is just part of it." Truer words were never spoken. Equipment doesn't have to be clean and flawless....it just needs to get the job done. Most of the time, anyway... ;)

At our county fair, a generator powers all the rides and shows along the midway. However, the classic restored ferris wheel .. located a ways off in the distance .. is still run by a red stationary Farmall engine that sits just off to the side.
Each year, I attend the fair and .. yes, take "at least" one ride on that old ferris wheel .. as my ride comes to a close .. I hear this exact sound 7:31 as I leave my seat .. and head back down the midway.
Guess I'll always be .. kind'of'a kid at heart ... Cheers.

@14:30 my biology teacher once asked us while teaching lab safety, "Can you tell the difference between hot glass and cold glass just by looking at it?" - I've never forgotten that lesson. 😉

Due to my wife's health I do most of the cooking. I'm gonna try that recipe though. I don't think even I can screw that up lol. And yes it needed the extra butter!! I told the wife while watching that I was surprised she didn't use extra butter and had to laugh when you did. Thanks you all take care.

Awsome vid as usual, Merdi. You crack me up with your little cut ups in the vid. Bonnie is such a great dog. She's aways at your side. That's a dog who would give her life to save you. Btw, I think the Gehl is about to give up the ghost. Course every time I say that, a farmer will beat it to fit and paint to match and have a smooth running machine again.lol
