- How to Grow Azalea from Cuttings!
Taking Azalea cuttings can be a moderately easy process, but success rates can vary depending on several factors. It's important to take the cuttings at the right time and provide them with optimal conditions for rooting.
The best time to take azalea cuttings is during the late spring or early summer when the new growth has hardened slightly but is still flexible. The cuttings should be taken from healthy, disease-free branches and should be around 4 to 6 inches long.
Once the cuttings have been taken, it's important to dip the cut end in rooting hormone and plant them in a well-draining soil mix. The cuttings should be kept in a humid environment and protected from direct sunlight until they develop roots. This can take several weeks to a few months.
Azalea is a popular choice for Bonsai because they have small leaves and flowers so they allow for intricate pruning and shaping. The size of the leaves also makes the tree look more aesthetically pleasing in a Bonsai pot. They are known for their beautiful and vibrant flowers, which add color and character to the bonsai display. Azaleas are also hardy and adaptable plants that can grow in a range of temperatures and soil types, making them a suitable choice for Bonsai beginners. With proper care, Azalea Bonsai can live for many years, making them a long-lasting and rewarding addition to any Bonsai collection!

Legend! That thicker branch you rooted looks awesome. Great little bonsai already! I’ve tried a few cuttings this spring too so hopefully my Azaleas take off too 😁👍 cheers!
I've just seen this comment when I'm thinking of doing some, timing pretty good, how did yours turn out?
The buds on the cutting need to be removed. otherwise, it'd delay the root development process.
You forget to mention the time of the year that one can try rooting cuttings?or the kind of surroundings that help in rooting?
Love your energy & the to the point presentation of bonsai techniques. Nice!
Hey thanks Jelle!! 🙂
Thank you, all good tips. I also work with bonsai and cuttings and I have a tip for you. Consider wearing gloves when using any rooting powder, including IBA. Specially since you are teaching others. Gl
Thsnk. Btw. Has anyone told you that you look like Ian from Outlander??!!
Thank You ~ there is a rarer type of small flower deep violet old fashioned azalea bush in n neighborhood. It is one of the last bushes of this kind around here and before it is lost like the others I would live to grow some of these ❤
I took a bunch of cuttings from mine but most didn't make it. Two are left and one has the beginning of roots and the other has not.
Any watering tips? I got one with one flower but then it died, the leaves are still green thoughb
Water when the soil begins to go on the dry side. Let it dry between watering but never let it fully dry out. The flowers only last a while before they die off each year.
What is that powder?
My name is Azalea

Cannabis roots in 3 days
Oh wow that is fast!
I have several of these from cuttings. Super easy to do 😀
Aw nice! 🙂 The blossoms on them are so pretty omg! Still not as pretty as Azalea to me though!
They say that compost doesn't work on azalea
I have had great success rooting Azalea into compost - though it will also root in kanuma but it will need watered a lot more 😊
How long does it take to grow to a store like plants usually?
Yep yep I do this all the time I have big and old fruit trees that I LOVE there flowers but the so far for me only works if I put them in just a jar or water. I even try the hormone thing nothing, I will try tiny branch like you did and see.
Oh nice! Let me know if it works for you!!
I will try this thank you
Lol that’s my name 😆 🌺
I just did mine last weekend. I dipped the branches into the rooting hormone jar.
Nice! I hope they root for you!! 😄
Me azalea happy my nem azalea
Very nice tirik
What is the best time to do this?
Late spring and early summer
👆🙃👆
Does this work with lilacs? I was just thinking on my drive home from work that I really want a lilac bonzai 💕
I've heard that rooting lilacs are a little tricky but not impossible! Try it out and see! It's always good to experiment with things to see if they work! I did a little research on them and found that you should take cuttings of lilac bushes from tender new growth in late spring or early summer. Mature growth is less likely to root. 😊
@Notion Bonsai Thanks so much for the tip! I know just the tree I'm gonna swipe it from 😇
Edit: PS subd!
You are the man!
Why are my leafs turning brown?
If the cuttings aren't kept humid enough they may transpire too much water and turn brown... this can lead to unsuccessful rooting!
Great video
Put them in the shadow afterwards ?
Yes, its good to keep them shaded until they start pushing out some new growth!
It has to be ericaceous compost
Great tip!!
Klasse und sympathisch 👍🌿
Vielen Dank! 🤗🪴
